Granted, I used a blower fan as instead of the box fan the canonical design uses.

Due to a series of unfortunate events, we've found ourselves with a reasonably clean basement. One of my wife's biggest complaints about the basement had always been dust. Dust from my very infrequently used wood-shop. Dust from the litter box. Dust from... well, dust.

The new basement seemed like a good excuse to take a crack at the dust situation and this design sprung into mind.

I built it with four 16x25 MERV 11 filters, some plywood, some 1x4s, some plumber's tape to hold the fan in place, and the aforementioned blower fan. I could have gone for a higher MERV rating, but I didn't feel the need to go super overboard. I can also crank the fan for multiple consecutive passes. That's the whole idea of the design after all.

The box itself is only held together with tape and the weight of the fan. Now that the basement is more together I might model and print some brackets to make the box more solid.

One cheap motion sensor plug later and the air down there is honestly pretty fresh

I finally finished a months long project consisting of a lot of research and help by a wonderful community.

I recently bought this Nokia 7110 because i thought the spring loaded keyboard cover is the coolest thing ever.

Apprently it's the first phone ever with a WAP Browser and it connects via CSD (Circuit-Switched-Data - basically calling a modem that transfers data via sound on the phone line)

This technology is basically dead in the big 26.

Over at r/vintagemobilephones i found an enthusiastic community that keeps these devices alive.

A user named bs0dd wrote a comprehensive guide on how to set up a WAP gateway and a CSD dial-in number.

I went through many SIM-cards to test it but ultimately failed at setting up the dial-in.

Through dumb luck Reddit user 15pmm01 realized that there's still a working dial-in number in Poland of all places.

As soon as that worked the fun began.

I immediately set up discord-wap and vibe-coded a Singal-CLI bridge, which gives this phone all abilities I wouldn't want to miss on the go. (Apart from Navigation, a Camera... yknow xD)

So yea... i am rlly happy this took an end.

I'm about to set up my own WAP Services and have fun with it :D

What is Farwoods?

Farwoods is a “graphical MUD,” an older style of MMO that mixes sandbox game mechanics with a roleplay community to create an immersive living world inspired by Redwall. It’s similar to a big, always-running D&D game that people drop in and out of. We have been working on the game since 2020 and next month, we will be bringing it back for people to try out and help us test all the changes we’ve made.

Farwoods is designed as a prosocial game where other people’s characters are part of the experience, as opposed to the antisocial theme park MMO style where there is a set story in which you are the protagonist in a largely on-rails experience, and forming connections with anyone else playing the game is purely optional.

First time trying out the NTS-4 as a audio interface, mainly since the M8 is glitchy when streaming directly to my Phone.

Hi. I am new to Lemmy. Only found out about it yesterday. One person told me about this place and advised to share the game here, saying that this community is less prejudiced and more likely to give feedback about game as an experience, instead of tools it was built with. I am mostly looking for feedback about the story and direction, since my main skill is writing and telling a story.

The game's story tells a story about life away from the front during wartime. There's no heroism or victories, and all you need to do is go to the store and buy some bread, listening to the protagonist's reflections on this conflict and how it changes the lives of everyone it touches. In this game, only one character has a name—and that's no coincidence, as they're all "nameless," the ones who won't be mentioned in the news, talked about, or likely even remembered. But each of them has their own life with dreams, fears, and hopes, and despite the bombings, they try to live on.

The story is fully fictional, but, as some might have quessed - are inspired by my life in Ukraine. Though, i think that the things i speak about are universal for any conflict.

This is an adventure game, also known as a "walking simulator." You probably could also quess that from the name) There are some interactive elements, but not many, so it's not for those who enjoy active gameplay. You'll mostly be reading or listening to the main character's monologues, and dialogues with various oddballs, walking, and completing small tasks.

The game also has three hidden endings. If you're interested in unlocking them, I'll give you a hint: when you enter the city, go left, look for a note, and... start counting. If your count is correct, the condition can be fulfilled on a second playthrough.

The game is completely free: it's too short to put a price tag on it, and I generally don't like doing that. Plus, this is likely my last game, and I don't have much life left in me, so there's no point in thinking about the future. However, for those who really want to support me, there are support packs. Since I hate microtransactions, they don't contain any in-game content, only bonuses like the soundtrack.

If the game is in English and you want to switch to Ukrainian (or vice versa), right-click on it in the library, select "Properties," and the first menu will offer an option to switch languages.

Also, if you know where else game can be shared, I'll be glad if you do, since I don't have money for advertising, and the game is not commercial, so simply talking about it is the only way to let people know that it even exists.

A few months ago, I was gifted a non-operational DEC VT320 serial terminal. This is a 80s/90s text-only CRT monitor, which was only displaying a thin vertical line rather than a proper picture. I've done some electronics repair in the past, but nothing this old or involving a high-voltage tube. But I figure that it would make for an interesting project over the summer, whether or not I can recover it. If nothing else, it is quite a retro talking piece.

Fortunately, DEC -- aka Digital Equipment Corporation-- made a lot of these things, and also published troves of service information, which was the norm back then (#RightToRepair). Among the documents that can be found online included the schematics, which would be of incredible aid. That said, the quality of the scan is pretty poor, and it took quite a bit of cross-referencing of component identifiers with the parts list to confirm what couldn't be read.

Before opening up the monitor, I did some preparatory research, to identify areas which would be worthwhile to investigate, and also to make sure I'm not going to shock myself in the process. My findings showed that because the CRT was able to display something beyond a single dot in the center of the screen, the issue would not be in the high-voltage generation circuitry, but rather the downstream circuits. Specifically, in the horizontal deflector path; this explains why the only image is a vertical line, because horizontal control was lost.

Using the field replacement guide, I got the monitor open and then discharged the anode using a screwdriver attached to the ground strap. There was no spark or sound, which can happen if the bleeder resistor was still intact. A good sign as to what's probably still working in this monitor, but I take no unnecessary risks around potentially high voltage.

The innards were reasonably laid out, basically existing as components that adorn the CRT display itself. The PSU, main board, and "arc protection" board were all easy to identify, although the latter was more like a connector than a board. I quickly ruled out the PSU by checking its output voltages, so the issue must be on the main board.

It took a while to extract the board, since I didn't want to break any of the 40-year old plastic clips. But once out, I began matching the board to the diagrams and examining for any obvious damage. No obviously blown caps, no evidence of thermal events, no components rolling around on the bottom.

At this point, I stopped to do some very thorough circuit analysis of the circuit diagrams, to absolutely understand what I was going to do. This actually took two tries, since each attempt revealed faults in my understanding, and I had to go back to the thinking chair. This part took a few days, until I finally internalized the circuit's behavior. As it turns out, this wasn't necessary, and I'll probably include it as a later comment, just for posterity.

When I returned to the board, I made a plan to solder some trace wires, to verify my expectations when powered on. And indeed, after reinstalling the board, my oscilloscope confirmed that the H sync signal was intact and the power transistor was functioning as expected.

Narrowing the search, I took the board back out and started tracing the lines on the PCB surface -- it was fortunately only a two-sided board -- and then compared my observations to the schematics. This revealed a difference, where the Horizontal Linearity inductor (H-LIN) was not showing connectivity, despite visibly being attached to the trace.

Closer examination revealed that of the inductor's three legs -- two for electrical connections, one extra for support -- one had developed a hairline fault. This physical damage broke continuity, likely from the shock of impacting something. I made a repair by constructing a wooden splint for physical support, and then soldered over the leg for electrical connectivity.

For good measure, I completed the exercise of verifying all other components, which showed that all other resistors, capacitors, and connectors were intact and likely working. And with that, I reassembled and powered on the monitor to see.

And it works! In total, I probably spent a week on-and-off working on this. I will say that this is a strange machine to have, since I've been able to hook it up to a modern Linux machine and use it as a serial TTY. I even wrote most of the text of this post in vim.

I built this because it's something I wanted to use for personal documentation and note taking, as well as learning more about and getting used to Rust.

Over a year ago I posted a needle pouch I had made, I still use this all the time but there were always a few elements I wasn't overly keen on. So when my friend's birthday was approaching I wanted to make her something and she is a keen cross stitcher, so I thought about making her a case like mine which she had seen and liked before.

So I set about making my own variation on the original pattern, it is mostly subtle, mostly just tweaking a few measurements but also to add a closure to it.

I also took the opportunity to add my favourite design feature, the X stitch that I use to combine two different pieces of leather to create a bit more visual interest.

The straps were a new idea for me, I could have done a standard snap closure like I've done a million times before, or I could have attached some straps and snaps directly to it but I do like making some sightly odd features sometimes and I liked the idea of a strap that loops around and attaches to itself. This meant I only needed one rivet to attach the strap to the body and the snaps could both be added to the strap. One benefit of this, with the time pressure I was under to finish it, was that had I messed up installing the snaps, I wasn't going to damage the otherwise finished case. I also didn't have to design and plan for the attachment points during the process. Is it the most practical closure? No. But do I like it as a bit of a quirky thing? Absolutely. One funny effect of this is that it ended up looking like some weird creature, particularly when open with the straps extended!

It all came together pretty easily, nothing exactly complicated in the construction other than some really awkward stitch spacing on the pockets, I really need to start designing things with the stitch spacing in mind - my 3.8mm chisels are just a bit awkward in that sense...

So yeah, very pleased with the outcome and she was really happy with her gift!

The first release of The Brotherhood is officially out. This is the Architech. It's still not production tested. But it's open-access for the first time. Make some graphs, share with your friends, and track your journey across it. Let the wikipedia of pedagogy begin!!

It's an open-source software that you can use to build obsidian-like knowledge graphs. But unlike obsidian, this is community-built like wikipedia. And it also has git-like forking abilities built in for every graph. All graphs are released under CC BY-SA. Go to our website for more details.

In these hot and trying times, I ain't trying to fall out to heat stroke ya know. It really does move a lot of air fast too..

I built this using a cheap bike trailer for hauling kids that I picked up off the curb and an old steel bed frame.

The idea is that I can use it to haul bikes around that I am working on for customers in my local community.

My next goals are to:

1. Move the wheels backwards by about a foot to improve handling and reduce scraping when going down curbs and driveways
2. Obtain a bike hauler that attaches to the roof or tow hitch of a car to allow me to tow more than one bicycle at a time

This version is awesome though because it was made mainly using junk and swearing :)

This Jam had many purposes. I have been working on this track based on samples of some old public domain tunes, and wanted to experiment with structure and elements.

I also wanted to finally start practicing using my M8 for live perfomance / Jams. Still just scraping the surface. But given that the M8 has been my goto music device and has me making a lot more songs then in a long time i really want it to be able to be a part of both my "jam" and "song writing" brains. :)

This is the new progress tracking ability added for users to check their progress of a skill graph. The backend handles this via Assessments and Capabilities - 2 general objects in the Brotherhood that will, in the future, serve as the blueprint for more exotic assessment systems like work-based, peer-verified assessments and capability certificates that will serve as the de-facto portable proof-of-skills.

This is currently in beta-stage and behind an invite-only access. However, very soon, signups will be open-for-all and you can test it for yourself. If you wish to try it out before that, please reach out through to us.

I was recommended to post here with my micro-art collectable botanical trading cards. I spent a long time making these. They are for each province and territory of Canada. Kind of a hobby that got out of 'hand'. I did everything by hand, locally and offline, so every individual card has some variations to them.

I’m really curious if others would ever want something like this? I'd be happy to figure out if it’s just me who likes them or?

I added a link for a self made waitlist (recommended to make one by a friend for the idea), just to see if anyone anywhere might be interested in my crafts. Not sure if my link worked, it's my first time trying to post after reading on lemmy for some time.
