yeah, basically the only way to vote informed is to spend several hours researching the candidates and their values, ballot measures' implications, etc.

before the internet that shit must have been goddamn near impossible.

it's a lot to ask of a population who is largely overworked, underpaid, and alienated from their communities to the point where having a few uninterrupted hours is a fucking luxury few of us have even occasionally. and usually we want to spend those hours with friends and family... so doing something boring like voter research is a hard sell

ironically, informed voting is one of the ways we could start to chip away at free time scarcity

I'm gonna have so much energy and get everything done tomorrow! I'm finally gonna break out of this cycle of running out of energy after work and getting nothing done at home! Tomorrow's the day!

:'D

I would recommend setting it to something like 6–8 minutes instead so that if something prevents you from being there to take it out when done (bathroom emergency, etc.) you don't potentially burn your home down

In the US, a vast majority of people vote by party. They may not even know the candidates by name, and simply vote "straight ticket."

But I was in line to vote a few years ago and overheard someone say something like "yeah I saw more signs for This Guy than for That Guy, so I guess I'll vote This Guy."

I have also heard it's not uncommon for Americans to vote for candidates they think are more attractive, or have a name they like more.

Basically, we're pathologically stupid

⚠️**Disclaimer! I am not a denier or even questioner of any genocides I'm aware of!**⚠️ I swear to fuck I am genuinely asking this question because I don't know the answer, and using a search engine for something like this is only going to yield crackpot denier misinformation.

I have used the argument in the past, "If given all available evidence you're still not sure a genocide is happening, you can probably safely assume that it is, because humans just constantly do genocide."

And I wanted to be prepared in case whoever I'm debating says something like "well in 19XX, group A accused group B of genocide and it turns out group A was just lying to make group B look bad!"

Basically, would they be full of shit, or have humans been proven to have sunk that low too? :/

Context: Latent tuberculosis is when the bacteria hangs out dormant in your body. It doesn't cause symptoms and isn't contagious, but it's not great since there's always a risk it could wake up when your immune system gets preoccupied with a different infection.

I had previously tested positive a few years ago when I started a different medical industry job. They X-rayed my chest, said it was fine and not to worry.

Just started a new medical industry job that also tests for it, and I'm happy to find out that I no longer have it! :D

NEW YORK (AP) — An under-construction Manhattan high-rise at risk of collapse was stabilized late Tuesday and some evacuations of nearby buildings were lifted.

“We’ve been monitoring the building for many hours and have not seen any movement,” Ahmed Tigani, commissioner of the New York City Department of Buildings, said during a news conference Tuesday.

By nighttime, residents were allowed back into several of the seven buildings that were evacuated as a precaution. [...]

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House passed legislation Thursday that would aid Ukraine and sanction key segments of the Russian economy, overriding objections from Republican leaders who warned the bill would undermine negotiations designed to achieve a comparable but stronger result.

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., seeks to cement U.S. assistance for Ukraine by providing more than $1 billion in security and reconstruction aid. It would make another $8 billion available for Ukraine’s defense through loans.

“You know, this is the only commencement speech that I’m giving this year and so I’ve watched a few highlights of graduation speeches where this or that corporate leader will discuss artificial intelligence, AI, and be met with literal boos,” Vance said as he wrapped up his remarks.

“Now, you can’t boo me. I’m the vice president of the United States,” he added, drawing laughs.

that's pretty cringe

When I switch the box fan in my kitchen on/off, the stove igniter fires once ("clicks"). The box fan is plugged into a different kitchen outlet than the stove is, though they're probably on the same circuit.

Should I be worried? What the heck would even cause this?

edit: ah beans. guess I'll text the super
