There's a sunset every day, for everyone, and anyone can see it just by going outside on a clear day and having a look. That means that while sunsets are beautiful, pictures of the sky are also largely worthless cause they can be had by anyone with a cellphone.

Well, the sky did this.

I had never seen these shenanigans before or after May 9, '26. (That's right, I've sat on this for four months. Sorry.) I've only ever seen these skies glowing this pinkish orange, this sleepy evening pastel explosion, just quite like this, exactly once. I stood there for a long time until the hue shifted far enough and the light left. It was a good day.

In particular, I enjoy the boundary framing from the tall building on the right.

An old photo I found in my archive from when I used to own a cheap macro lens. I really enjoyed trying to take close-up shots of tiny insects, but it was very difficult to get anything in focus. The smallest gust of wind would bring the whole thing out of focus again.
Eventually I sold that lens together with the rest of my old camera (it was just too bulky).

Sometimes I’m not sure. Sometimes I feel less confident in my work, that I feel things aren’t quite up to par. Lately, that’s been the reason I haven’t been posting new art but for sporadically. I’m dissatisfied with my concert photography, and I’m dissatisfied with my urban photography. I think I’m in a slump.

But this is the picture I took lately that I dislike the least. Sure, the power lines obscure the buildings, but there’s lots of little lines to follow, elements and textures moving around in the image. It’s an image people participate in, that people built.

And I suppose the juxtaposition between the closer and smaller industrial area at the front, and the monolithic city with the glow in the back, is nice.

Sorry I’ve gone a bit without submitting work. I will try to do better.

This is, I believe, a rhinoceros beetle grub. Found on a stony track in a rainforest in Peru. It's about 9cm long.

I just got new glasses, after an appointment featuring my optometrist telling me "I warned you you were getting older." The bifocal script isn't strong, but it's there!

And now I can't figure out how to use my viewfinder. I can use the screen, but I preferred (or at least did!) to use the EVF. Right now, I can't even get it clear enough to adjust the diopter. I have to imagine there's someone else here with bifocals who has figured out what works for them -- advice, tips, tricks, ways to reverse my degrading eyesight, I'll take anything.

I've not really "got" what people mean when they talk about the bokeh on some vintage lenses before. But with this I see it. Full of character, without being messy.

Found a snake in the shop. After a mild heart attack I trapped the snake in box and released it outside.

One of the largest beetles in North America reaching sizes of 1.6" (4.0 cm) in length.

I tend to shoot a lot and not review my photos a lot, but it was recently brought to my attention that my pictures are really dark. I tend to operate in P mode most of the time when I'm doing snapshots and just adjusting EV if I have a particularly bright/dark subject.

However, when shooting in EV +0, my photos are in fact turning out really dark. Even the histogram statistics agree, and I think this behavior has changed over time.

The on-camera histogram agrees. Everything gets shoved to the left.

Oddly, this doesn't seem to happen all the time. Seems to mostly show up in low-contrast and indoor photos. It seems the camera would rather shove the histogram to the left rather than center it. Even in manual mode, centering the exposure meter still has the histogram shoved to the left.

Things I've tried:

• Turning off the ND filter. I can confirm ND function works as the ISO shoots up when ND is enabled
• Updating the firmware. Running the latest version
• Resetting all camera settings
• Asking on the Ricoh forums.

Things I haven't tried:

• Testing with an 18% grey card (it's in the mail)

Any idea what could be causing this?
