Happy Thursday, Inkineers-

We’re so close to Go-time for Inktober! I hope the Inktober52 challenge has helped to keep you in fighting form.

We’re up to our eyeballs in happenings over here in Inktoberland; all of it good in some way or another but even with a plethora of good things, they all come with extra effort, work, stress, and management. I find the best way to shake off a rough or exhausting day is to crank up the tunes in the kitchen and have a dinner-making DANCE party. We do this a lot in the Parker house, somebody is cutting veggies, somebody else is stirring the rice, and somebody (ok fine, it’s usually me) is dusting off those amazing dance moves that made us all look so cool in the 80’s and 90’s. Of course the teenagers are never embarrassed or horrified as The Running Man and I are proving who’s still got it while MC Hammer reminds us not to touch this. You can’t keep having a bad day with Vanilla Ice or Run-D.M.C., it would just be too tricky.

For our prompt this week, show us what DANCE inspires for you, and for bonus points, maybe share a video of your own dinner-time dance party as you get jiggy with it. It’s guaranteed to lift your spirits.

Wishing you all the boogie-down best,

-Alison

Happy Thursday, Inkstigaters-

Hope your day is going well and you’re ready for the inking-sprint (Inktober) in just 2 weeks!

Two more prompts for Inktober52 before the craziness starts and this week, we want to see what you’re made of. It might mean being brave, plated, the edge of a book, or the actual backbone of an animal, but whether you lean realistic or representational, show us your best SPINE.

Best of luck and happy inking!

-Alison

Happy Thursday, Ink slingers-

I hope you’re all getting warmed up for traditional Inktober, coming in only 21 days! Thank you for all your wonky art last week, and a special thanks to all of you who exercised the patience of a communion of saints as you kindly explained 437 times in the comments on social media what Inktober52 is all about. Our Inktoberers are awesome (and I’m coming to realize the 52ers are extraordinary.) Thank you for making this community so helpful and supportive, especially for all the new and unsure artists.

This week, I’m remembering that time I was on a field trip for 8th grade choir and as I found myself sitting in a hotel hallway late at night, surrounded by a horde of giggling 13-year old girls, I came to the unsettling realization that my family was not like everyone else’s. Our packing list for the 3 day trip had included “games for down time” and I was excited because somehow I’d ended up in a small group of really nice girls. There I was, rocking a new home-perm, with more braces than teeth in my mouth, and hoping to make a new friend. One of the girls pulled out a set of dice and suggested some game I can’t remember and a hush fell over the group. “Oh, we don’t play with those”, came quietly from a girl with an oversized neon-pink smiley face t-shirt. “Yeah,” said another girl, “dice and cards are so bad.” I sat there in our collective cloud of Aquanet hairspray and Debbie Gibbson’s Electric Youth and reconsidered the face cards and m&m’s I’d brought for a round or two of candy poker. I come from a long line of non-gambling, sometimes-cheating, card-flinging, game-playing women. We had ALWAYS played card games and dice games and my mom could shuffle and deal like she was born in Vegas! Family reunions, camping trips, rainy Sunday afternoons: we played these (shocking) games. And you know what? New friends are overrated.

For this week, if your upbringing was as edgy as mine, show me what DICE brings to your pen. And if you’re playing games together later, deal me in.

Best of luck!

-Alison

Happy Thursday, Inkthusiasts!

I know that Inktober list launch got people all kinds of distracted, so for any of you still hanging in there for Inktober52, we send you a great big high-five and say “keep going, you can do it!”

This week, thanks to the petri dish that is public school, we’re all wading through the symptoms of a mild headcold. Besides the extra tissues and the need for hot honey tea, it’s not too bad except for the dizzyness. There have been a few hang-on-to-the walls moments for most of us and I had to go down the stairs on my bum at one point so I didn’t cartwheel down from the second floor. If you see any of us out and about (you should definitely send us home if that happens,) please ignore the stumbly and WONKY gait.

For this week, show us your best crooked, unsteady, or just not-quite-right version of WONKY. We can’t wait to see!

Off to take a nap-

Alison

Happy Friday, Inkredible People!

It was so fun to peruse last week’s GOLDFISH drawings. Some were hilarious, while some were remarkably majestic. I didn’t know a goldfish could inspire feelings of awe, but here we are.

This week we have a challenging word for you that’s going to require some creative solutions: CINCH. There’s several meanings to this word. As a verb it means to tighten or fasten a belt. “She cinched her belt".” As a noun it can mean an easy task, “That math test was a cinch!” It can also mean to make an outcome certain, “Her second goal cinched the victory.”

As I’m writing this I’m already coming up with ideas I want to draw.

Ok, have fun this one. Hope it’s a cinch for you!

-Jake

Happy Thursday, Inkerators!

Your DIVE art was fantastic (I don’t know why I’m even surprised anymore; you guys are consistently amazing.) Coincidentally, as you were all creating your art, I was at the ocean for a couple of days with my fishy family. We spent every available moment in the water, diving into the waves and inadvertently ingesting more that the recommended daily allowance of sand and saltwater.

We even pulled off an epic surprise by having my oldest son, Tate, and his family join us. I was in heaven hold little baby Simon and marveling at how much he has grown in just a few months. I laughed pretty hard as I remembered when Tate himself was a big chubby baby and had outgrown yet another set of clothing. Jake walked in as I was sorting through onesies and sleepers, putting the too-small items into a box and pulling out the next size. Jake exclaimed, “Wait, don’t put him in bigger clothes yet- he’ll just keep getting bigger!” I had to break it to my sweet 23 year old husband that babies aren’t like goldfish, and don’t grow simply to fill their enclosure or clothing. He was going to get bigger, no matter what he wore. Remembering the look on Jake’s face still makes me cackle.

We were recently (this afternoon) gifted a brand new GOLDFISH by my daughter and her husband as a thank-you for housing them this summer while they were looking for a place to live. (In case you heard the above sentence and thought “wow, a goldfish would make a great gift!”, slow your roll and maybe hold off on that.) We promptly named him Jonathon Jo Mama Parker and while in our excellent care, the thing lived for a good 40 minutes before sinking to the bottom of the bowl where it is either playing “hold as still as you can to see if anyone will panic,” or it has indeed bought the farm and I’ll be preparing him for burial tomorrow morning. He was a great pet during his short life, and he will be mourned appropriately.

In honor of our scaly, shimmery, good buddy, JJMP, show us your tribute GOLDFISH this week and try to keep your pets alive longer than the Parkers do.

Happy Thursday, Ink-Slingers!

This week draw something inspired by the word DIVE. Like someone about to plunge into water, a submarine going to the lower depths of the ocean, or even an eating establishment you wouldn’t want to take your parents to. Go get creative, and see you next week!

Here’s a “fun” read comparing Trump to biblical passages about the antichrist! :)

This has been working for me, so here it is:

  1. When you’re ready to fall asleep, pick a five to seven letter word (it can be longer if you can keep track of the letters). (e.g. - “Candle”)

  2. For each letter, pick an animal. (e.g. - “C is for Cat”)

  3. To the best of your ability, try and picture that animal in as much detail as you think is appropriate. (e.g. - “It’s seated but not laying down. It has cinnamon-colored fur, short. Its nose is pink, etc.”

  4. Move on to the next letter and do steps 2 & 3 for each letter.

  5. If you finish a word, pick another word, and repeat the same process.

Apparently this mimics the random-ish thought pattern that precedes sleep, and supposedly signals to your brain that the environment is safe enough to sleep.

I forget where I picked this up. This was just one of those things where you go, “Oh - that sounds interesting. I’ll guess I’ll give it a shot if I happen to remember it when I’m trying to fall asleep.” It wasn’t something that I ever really expected to work for me.

Rest in peace. One of the biggest influences of my childhood. Sad to hear he’s gone, but what a life he’d had. <3

Do we have any concrete evidence that he’s even telling the truth? Something other than a tweet on a platform he owns? He seems to lie often.

Truly, a requiem for a dreamer.
