It's one of the most interesting new phones (at least for me). Moderate pricing, long support, good hardware. And probably many options like LineageOS or Graphene if you want a custom operating system.

[–] Ilandar@aussie.zone 11 points 4 months ago

The design is also noticeably softer and cuter than previous Pixels, which may appeal more to some.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Last time I checked it was the same price as the Pixel 8...

[–] cron@feddit.org 5 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I saw offers from 400€, that price seems fair. These offers might depend on your country.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I got mine for $300 because I'm also on a Fi plan. But I'm sure most phones can be subsidized similarly.

[–] unrushed233@lemmings.world 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Does Google Fi allow for OEM unlocking (to install a custom ROM)?

[–] reddeadhead@awful.systems 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I use a pixel from the google store on google fi and had no issues flashing new roms, Cellular worked fine with lineage and graphene on my 6a.

[–] unrushed233@lemmings.world 3 points 4 months ago

That's great

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 3 points 4 months ago

Ah it dropped by 80€ here

There's a ton of advantages, but some very real disadvantages as well. No lsposed and incompatibility with certain magisk modules are probably the biggest for me personally.

[–] unrushed233@lemmings.world 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

What Magisk modules do you need to use?

[–] BigFatNips@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

None, for our holy Savior Daniel M'kay and grapheneOS have saved my soul. For even mentioning magisk I clearly deserve a public flogging, maybe even an execution. Obviously. RoOt iS iNsEcUrE

Bruh I'm just casually asking, what's wrong with that question

[–] iturnedintoanewt@lemm.ee 7 points 4 months ago

Sets himself up for the Grapheneos fanboys flogging. I'm using Grapheneos myself, and i agree they are not very... Tactful in addressing some specific usecases. I agree with the doctrine of not weakening the system, but an option should exist for people that understand the consequences, and still need a different use than the one envisioned by the developers. I'm not talking about root, there's more decisions that are made for you without your saying. For your safety. But still.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 months ago

I'll just stay on Lineage, thanks

[–] WagnasT@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

until google stops patching it but lineage still keeps updating

[–] unrushed233@lemmings.world 9 points 4 months ago

Using a device with no vendor-provided firmware security patches doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Also, the Pixel 8a gets 7 years of updates. That's plenty of time, and most people get a new phone after a much shorter time.

[–] pewgar_seemsimandroid@lemmy.blahaj.zone -3 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Graphene is Snake oil, use calyx.

[–] unrushed233@lemmings.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Calyx is pretty insecure by default, it removes some default AOSP security features and is very slow to push security patches. And it doesn't include any of the GrapheneOS security features like hardened SELinux, a hardened kernel, secure app spawning, hardened Chromium browser and WebView or hardware-based integrity attestation. It also uses a very flawed Google Play services implementation (microG) which requires root and has worse app compatibility.

What about moto g84? Any custom Roms ?

[–] mtchristo@lemm.ee 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (3 children)

LineageOS kinda dead these last years they only do pixel phones. While the hoards of people using android are buying Samsung's and Xioami's budget phones

Edit: after reading the comments. I checked again and was surprised they have updated the list with newer models they weren't on the list a few months ago

[–] loutr@sh.itjust.works 23 points 4 months ago (1 children)

How so? The devices page on the wiki lists 171 officially supported devices. I'm writing this comment on a Poco F3 running the official LineageOS 21 release...

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 6 points 4 months ago

What the hell are you talking about?

LineageOS is well past it's peak days but they support a ton of devices beyond Pixel.

[–] SatyrSack@lemmy.one 5 points 4 months ago

they have updated the list with newer models they weren't on the list a few months ago

You must be confusing it with GrapheneOS. LineageOS has literally always supported devices from multiple different manufacturers.
