Jokes aside, what's this image supposed to represent? Did the child actually get eaten alive in whatever story this is from?

I guess it is a depiction of a miracle of resurrection. It could be saint Nicholas or similar to this story:

One story tells how during a terrible famine, a malicious butcher lured three little children into his house, where he killed them, placing their remains in a barrel to cure, planning to sell them off as ham. Nicholas, visiting the region to care for the hungry, saw through the butcher's lies and resurrected the pickled children by making the sign of the cross.

pickled children

Well there's a phrase I didn't expect to hear, well, ever

[–] XTornado@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

That's what I will call anything pickled now.

"pickle me, Elmo!" were the children's last words

[–] Finite@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Elves are pickled children?

Wikipedia cites this one: Ferguson, George (1976) [1954], "St. Nicholas of Myra or Bari", Signs and Symbols in Christian Art, Oxford, England: Oxford University Press, pp. 135–136

You can "borrow" this version for free: https://archive.org/details/signssymbolsinch0000unse/ The story is at page 81. But there're no more details, just the same short paragraph.

Looks like the dude probably has a halo, so clergy or saint maybe. And kind of looks like he's blessing the meal.

But I'm also completely confused what's going on here. Bath was too hot and the baby's like "nah man I'm cooked."

Do we have a Trippin' Thru Time community yet?

[–] imgonnatrythis@lemm.ee 40 points 1 year ago (3 children)

No but there are 33 communities devoted to Linux. Does that help?

[–] cloudy1999@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 year ago

Do you all want to start another Linux community?

It actually does, thanks a lot!

[–] OhTheMoose@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I want my meme communities back, but I don't want to create them, I don't have that kind of commitment lol

I hear you. I was just bitching about not even having an "art" community on Lemmy, but I don't have time to start or upkeep that. As much as Lemmy hates money, I wish there were some incentives to have healthy communities. Like if you start a community and have more than 50 posts per day you get a little shitcoin or a floppy disk signed by Linus Torvalds or something.

Art is so broad though, I support the idea of an art community but it would be useful to have an idea of what kinds of rules the community would have. Main reason art communities go out of control is that people start posting their art, and then you are swamped in AI waifus and scribbles made on lined paper.

It would be useful to have like a board of people where you can gather interest and discuss to see there is a minimum amount of people sharing your idea of a community before getting it started.

[–] imgonnatrythis@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I like that idea. Like a lets start a community community where you can guage interest and if a post starts growing they can just go start the community and continue the discussion there. Seems like a better strategy than starting a corn doll community and sitting around waiting for another corn doll enthusiast to find you and post some corn doll pictures.

I remember seeing someone advertising an art community on !newcommunities@lemmy.world a few days ago...

EDIT: it was !traditional_art@lemmy.world, is that kinda like what you're looking for?
