Back when "The Flat Earth Society" was all about trolling and making an elaborate scientific joke and not hardcore extremist science deniers.

[–] DudeImMacGyver@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Can you explain this one to my ignorant ass? What's the joke?

[–] Dirk@lemmy.ml 19 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The joke is the absurdity of a flat earth and making puns like "all around the globe" in that context and creating absurdist proof that the Earth is flat despite everyone knowing since kindergarten that it isn't.

But some people started taking it too seriously.

[–] DudeImMacGyver@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh, I guess I got that part but was expecting there to be a pun I didn't get in the "read that again slowly" text.

[–] Dirk@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago

They either got wooooshed or are taking part on that joke ...

[–] humbletightband@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Imagine claiming something as stupid as the flatness of Earth.

The first group of people will try to prove that it's round.

The second group will be triggered by the explanations of the first group. They will try to prove that Earth is geoid.

The third group will see how people who claim that Earth is round are being attacked.

The fourth group of edgelords will pretend that they believe that Earth is flat.

This ritual will continue until the myth of flat Earth is created. Isn't it funny?

That part I guess I knew, but I was expecting a pun in the arrow text and thought I was missing something. Guess I was overthinking it.

[–] chellewalker@lemmy.ca 37 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There's not much I miss about Reddit, but one of those things is a proper community to put jokes that have been run into the ground. The unnecessary arrow is one thing, but then the second reaction image really kill the otherwise mildly amusing joke.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

made with mematic

[–] DannyBoy@sh.itjust.works 31 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Since I've seen this last time it's gotten moldy and picked up a useless arrow and a useless reaction image.

[–] words_number@programming.dev 10 points 2 months ago

This! It clearly needs more JPEG though. Here, I fixed it: https://morejpeg.com/Image/View/ed39fea5-0150-ef11-8104-ea49aec8cc27

[–] frightful_hobgoblin@lemmy.ml 31 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This joke is over 100 years old

[–] BruceTwarzen@lemm.ee 6 points 2 months ago

This joke is for people who think they are smarter than people who troll the real flat eathers.

[–] MagisterSieran@discuss.tchncs.de 24 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thank you for including a reaction image so I know how to feel about it.

[–] eezeebee@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 months ago

It could still use some red circles for the rest of us non-geniuses. I look at this and see nothing.

[–] PrivateNoob@sopuli.xyz 22 points 2 months ago (3 children)
[–] johny@feddit.org 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I wouldn’t have gotten the joke otherwise, maybe add a red circle and a laughing minion next time to be extra clear.

[–] Lemjukes@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And comment, and attached image. This joke works with just the tweet but apparently we need to kill the frog like 8 different ways.

[–] PrivateNoob@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 months ago

Well it kinda feels like that I don't need to think to understand the meme, since the required emotional response is over there as the facepalmers.

I assume this meme is just a repost from OP. It's a perfectly decent meme OP, dw we aren't bashing you down.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I thought it was "out slowly" but the arrow pointed out the stem, helping me realise the 'o' was actually a 'b'.

[–] PrivateNoob@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 months ago

Okay, the arrow can stay

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm just waiting for Elon Musk to come out as a flat earther. It's about as absurd for the CEO of an EV company to support Trump as it would be for the CEO of a space company to believe in a flat earth.

[–] Stovetop@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

He seems like the kind of person delusional enough to claim that he invented the portal that transports you from one end of the flat world to the other to explain why planes can cross the Pacific.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago
[–] copd@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Wait people think this is real?

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 1 points 2 months ago

Well I know my uncle thinks the world is flat but he is from a third world country. Not sure what's up with the muricans.

[–] AVincentInSpace@pawb.social 5 points 2 months ago

You know, I really think that without that arrow and the picture of people facepalming at the bottom, I wouldn't have understood why this was funny

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

Like rain on your wedding day!

[–] onlooker@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Wasn't this debunked as fake ages ago?

[–] copd@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

No shit, of course this is fabricated
