What to do with inherited server? (lemmy.world)

Hey everyone. So I just inherited a Dell R720 from work. I don’t know the full specs on it yet, but it’s got a 24 core processor and about 380 GB of memory. I need to buy my own drives, though. I honestly have no idea what to do with this. I’ve dreamed of having a home lab, but only ever thought about hosting a Unifi controller and a plex or jellyfin server. I’ll probably put Proxmox on it to manage everything. What recommendations do you all have for making use of this server? I’m honestly open to anything!

Hey @shaggy959500@lemmy.world what did you end up doing with the server? From where yo uar enow, we could provide some other ideas/directions to head.

I'm extremely curious what you have done with it for the last 3 years. I see two possibilities: 1. you gave it away for pennies as soon as you turned it on and heard its whoooosh. 2. I'll get 32 A4 pages worth of text about VM-s, VLAN-s, reverse proxies, internal CA-s services etc. ... And I'm looking forward to a lot of reading tonight. :)

sorry to disappoint! There was someone else at work who wanted the server at the time. When I couldn’t come up with any solid use cases to justify the power draw, I let them have it.
