The sheriff’s department in Portage County, Ohio has been stripped of its election security duties after its MAGA sheriff said people displaying Kamala Harris signs in their yards should have their addresses recorded so illegal immigrants can be sent to their homes

Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski, a Donald Trump-supporting Republican seeking re-election, likened migrants to “human locusts” and called Harris a “Flip-Flopping, Laughing Hyena” on his personal and campaign Facebook accounts earlier this month.

The Ohio Secretary of State’s Office determined last week that Zuchowksi's post didn’t break state election laws, but local citizens expressed their discomfort with having an immigrant-hating MAGA sheriff in charge of protecting the vote.

Over 100 people attended an emergency meeting called by the local NAACP chapter, the *Ravenna Record-Courier *reported. Frank Hairson, the communications chair of the NAACP chapter said people told him: “They’re afraid to vote. They’re afraid to put signs in their yard.”

They should, uh, also have discomfort with an immigrant-hating MAGA sheriff in charge of protecting the community. Vote him out when he's up for re-election.

Nice. Not sure what to make of his opponent based on the website. No major red flags come up, but I'm sure the people in Portage County probably know him and where he stands on things way better than I do.

OTOH, the website is largely boring and factual, so I'm assuming he may not be that bad? The MAGAts are usually running from similar scripts, and this doesn't seem to fit that.

[–] Volkditty@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

He's a Democrat and he hasn't made national news for his despicably racist remarks about immigrants. Outside of that, who really cares what the county sheriff's platform is? If I lived there, I'd vote for him.

[–] Branch_Ranch@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I live like a thousand miles away but I just donated $25 to him. Good luck man!

Is it normal to know anything at all about your local Sheriff?

I had to do three google searches and then scroll down for a while to even find my local one, then their bio was so dull when I looked it up it was difficult to pay attention to it.

...distinguished career in law enforcement includes experience with various law enforcement agencies serving the metropolitan area. ... going on to serve with both the City and the County Police Departments. In 2008, applied that experience to the creation of the public safety office for the rapidly expanding College ...became the Assistant Chief of Police and...

The only thing I know about my local sheriffs is that regardless of politics they are probably trash. Fucken San Bernardino.

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 15 points 2 months ago

Well that's timely. Come on Portage , OH, do your part!

[–] assembly@lemmy.world 49 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Zuchowski followed up to his own Facebook post last week, saying his comments “may have been a little misinterpreted??”

Fucking how were your comments misinterpreted???

[–] meeeeetch@lemmy.world 39 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Well, when read by someone who isn't currently waiting for the green light to kill all liberals, it was supposed to be interpreted as a joke.

Right up until he and his deputies showed up armed at their door making it clear it was no longer a joke.

Anyone know portage county's policy on recall votes? Maybe they can help his term end early.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Two issues - it's likely too late to recall him, the time it would take to get through the legal processes would be longer than voting him out in November. Secondly the secretary of state has already abdicated his responsibility in the matter.

The Ohio secretary of state's office said it did not plan to take any action.

“Our office has determined the sheriff’s comments don’t violate election laws,” said Dan Lusheck, a spokesperson for Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose. “Elected officials are accountable to their constituents, and the sheriff can answer for himself about the substance of his remarks.”

On one, his term of office could be ten years for all I know. Is he up for reelection this November?

On two, I do remember seeing that now that you mention it. But wouldn't a recall petition force the SoS to take action?

Edit: He is up for reelection currently

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I did wonder on that - are all sheriffs typically voted in, or are some appointed? And is there a rule about failure to do your job and appointing a replacement until the next election?

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Sheriffs are generally elected, but the scope of their responsibility varies widely in different jurisdictions. In some places they are mostly responsible for some combination of courtroom bailiffs and serving legal documents and running the county jail. In others, they're the primary law enforcement that citizens will deal with on a daily ~~basement~~ basis.

[–] mostNONheinous@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Sure hope I never have to deal with a Sherriff in my basement daily

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

GODDAMMIT! 🤣🤣🤣

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Around my parts, they're all elected at the county level. Not sure if that varies by state or not.

[–] mosiacmango@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

It varies state by state, and even county by county. Some are directly elected, some are appointed by other elected officials.

Direct elections theoretically make sheriffs accountable to voters, but realistically almost no one cares who the sheriff is unless they directly stir up a controversy. Bad but quiet sheriffs can fester for decades.

It also causes issues with them being accountable to other elected officials, like the mayor or city council.

Directly appointing Sheriffs makes them accountable to whoever appointed them, who are in turn accountable to voters. It can lead to sheriff roles changing more often if the appointing body shifts, and can result in cronyism.

Personally I think they should be appointed, but have independent, direct oversight outside of the appointing structure.

That dude ain't protecting anything but Trump's ego (and his own). Vote these clowns out.

[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 44 points 2 months ago

"Don't be a fascist" police challenge (impossible)

[–] DogPeePoo@lemm.ee 37 points 2 months ago (2 children)

If I lived near him, I would definitely plant a Kamala sign right in his yard.

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 36 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I would recommend against that. Based on what I know about him, I believe that you would be shot dead if you approached his property.

This is a man that's not only prepared for violence; he's a man looking for a pretense to harm.

[–] toasteecup@lemmy.world 29 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Tldr; he's a cop and will cop you to death

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

He would be overflowing with self-righteousness while you bled out.

[–] DogPeePoo@lemm.ee 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Maybe drop it with a drone on his roof in the middle of the night then :)

Not campaign advice😂

Seriously though, fuck this guy especially

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

editorial suggestion, possible slight correction: he's a man looking [to manufacture] a pretense to harm. Dad was an attorney and took a wrongful death case against a PD a few towns over. The harassment he and the rest of the firm got just for taking the case wouldn't end until we paid a couple years of bribes to the local pd via enrolling in the local captain's karate dojo. the one benefit that came from it is us kids got to learn to recognize all the kinds of police officers and how to manage their expectations in police encounters.

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Manufacture. Like a Rittenhouse with a badge.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

You’d be too terrified to do that because you’d know that people have disappeared in in that area for less.

[–] Soup@lemmy.cafe 27 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Why the fuck does he still have a fucking job?!?!?! My god I fucking hate how shit is run in this country. What a joke!

Any one of us would have been fired for FAR less.

Yet here we hate cheering that this piece of shit was slapped on the wrist.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Sheriffs are usually voted in.

[–] Soup@lemmy.cafe 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I understand how they’re hired. That’s not in question. What I don’t understand is why he wasn’t fired.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

You can’t fire public officials but may be able to impeach them. Don’t doubt it: the majority want this guy.

[–] Soup@lemmy.cafe 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Depending on the state- a governor has the authority to fire a sheriff. And yes- Ohio’s governor does have this authority.

Ergo…. The asshole should be fired.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Nice. Then that answers that question. I e nobody cares. Not really

[–] JustinTheGM@ttrpg.network 1 points 2 months ago

Eh, at most you can say a plurality of those who voted when he was elected in 2020 checked the box by his name. We'll see whether this dipshit gets reelected.

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Dude is doing his job. Cops are supposed to attack marginalized groups. Always been that way.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Democrats are not "a marginalized group" but otherwise sure

[–] djsoren19@yiffit.net 3 points 2 months ago

I mean, if you live and work in Ohio, you probably won't be fired for being an out and proud racist unless it gets picked up by the news. He's allowed to do this because he's protected by all the other bigots in his state, and Ohio is full of them.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

fire him and be done with it

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 4 points 2 months ago

Sheriffs are typically elected, which is a bit ironic considering the National Sheriff Association adopted a fasces for their symbol in 1932.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Make a point that says, since these maga folks don't mind having a convicted felon as president, get all addresses voting for this sheriff, including the sheriff himself, to known felons...

Public servants are in service to the public. Good to know parts of the US REPUBLIC haven't forgotten that. Lest the French request the statue be returned, despite their current domestic circumstances.
