Instructions unclear: still depressed and smell like vinegar.

[–] burgersc12@mander.xyz 45 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Its a surprising effect, no one said it was a good surprise!

[–] aaaa@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nothing about this outcome was a surprise

[–] burgersc12@mander.xyz 5 points 1 month ago

The surprise is there is no surprise?

[–] fckreddit@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Was your depression surprised though?

[–] M137@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

No, but the vinegar surely was.

[–] Flocklesscrow@lemm.ee 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

"There goes that gloomy guy that smells like a foot."

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Feet are not supposed to smell like vinegar. You may need to give your feet some extra tlc if they do. If that doesn’t work, talk to your doc.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 50 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Eating salt and vinegar chips is the biological equivalent of scrubbing your digestive tract with a wire brush, and this is exactly what I deserve.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 7 points 1 month ago

I’ve heard of people being told to drink vinegar to try and pass a THC test.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 38 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The trial was completed by a total of 28 overweight but otherwise healthy adults, who were split into two groups: one group taking two tablespoons of red wine vinegar twice daily, and the other group taking a daily pill with a very small amount of vinegar in it.

Group too small, overweight is a weird group to use because it doesn’t really apply to people. And there wasn’t a control

[–] paragade@lemmy.ca 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

overweight is a weird group to use because it doesn’t really apply to people

Overweight people aren't people?

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 29 points 1 month ago

Sure but my point was that an underlying health condition can impact a study and mean the results don’t apply to the general population

It could be as simple as vinegar is an appetite suppressant so their mood boosted as their diet was better

[–] baldingpudenda@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago

While I understand your point that it is a weird group to test on,

[–] fckreddit@lemmy.ml 25 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Of course. If I add vinegar to anything it has a surprising effect.

[–] lukecooperatus@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 month ago

An effect that becomes less surprising with repetition. At some point, it's no longer a "surprising effect" but an entirely expected one.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Only at first. Unless you've got that Memento or 50 First Dates shit going on..

[–] CptEnder@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah I've never been mad because I ate some salt and vinegar chips

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 18 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

The country with the highest per capita consumption of vinegar in 2018 was the Netherlands, with 3,108 liters per 1,000 people

This checks out. As we all know, the Dutch only inflict depression, they’re never depressed themselves.

[–] CptEnder@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

As a Ferrari fan I can confirm.

[–] mosiacmango@lemm.ee 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I feel like you've done that to yourself. The Dutch are barely involved.

[–] CptEnder@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Also true. See: our pitwall

[–] 4_degrees@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago

This could explain my love for pickles. My body's looking out for me, I guess

[–] darkpanda@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Unfortunately most chip companies don’t actually use salt and vinegar directly, they use sodium diacetate and sodium acetate which when combined produce the salt and vinegar flavouring we know.

[–] grozzle@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

is that to avoid using liquid vinegar?

[–] darkpanda@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah, basically. You get the same flavour but in a powdered form. Imagine opening a bag of chips and getting a soggy mess of liquid vinegar. It would be chaos. Its probably cheaper too, but I don’t know shit about chip manufacturing.

[–] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Is that effect making your depression worse? I think drinking vinegar might make me more depressed.

1 - popsci headlines about food are always bogus

2 - skimming through the article, it suggests that the Vit B in vinegar is the suspected cause

3 - substituting vinegar for antidepressants (which the article does not state, but seems to ~~elude~~ allude to) is a bad idea

Apple cider vinegar (unpasteurised) gang here, love the stuff!

[–] MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It'll cure what ails ya.

Somehow. Doesn't matter what it is. Miracle cure, yessiree.

[–] M137@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What if my ailment is feeling sick after ingesting apple cider vinegar?

[–] MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net 14 points 1 month ago

You're probably miracle-intolerant.

[–] 0ops@lemm.ee 5 points 1 month ago
[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

If this is true then how come Britain is depressed as fuck?

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

TBF the headline didn't say it was a good effect.

[–] averyminya@beehaw.org 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Hey now, it alleviates depression, it doesn't cure Britain.

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hang on a sec, I need a drink.

[–] curiousaur@reddthat.com 4 points 1 month ago

I litterally drink the juice. The jar is completely empty when I'm done.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago

And suddenly salt and vinegar chips will increase in prive by a factor of 100.000

[–] Sabre363@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

Help me, salt-vinegar chipobi! Your my only hope . . .

[–] howrar@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago

Hmmmm... A quick pickled depression you say

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

You cannot handle my strongest potion, Adventurer.

My weakest potion would leave you crumpled on the floor.

[–] frickineh@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

The vinegar situation where I am atm has kind of made me more depressed? Some of it is straight up ass, and the salt & vinegar chips have been pretty terrible across the board. I love vinegar, too, so I'm very sad. Maybe the vinegar has to taste good to work.

[–] radicalautonomy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Gitcha some of them all-dressed chips for a little flavor with your vinegar.
