State Sen. Kevin Corbin calls out “conspiracy theory junk” about unburied bodies and FEMA stealing money.

A Republican senator in the North Carolina legislature has issued a public plea for people to stop spreading conspiracy theories about the disaster recovery efforts in areas ravaged by flooding from Hurricane Helene.

In a Thursday afternoon Facebook post, state Sen. Kevin Corbin, who represents the state’s westernmost area, asked his followers for a favor: “Will you all help STOP this conspiracy theory junk that is floating all over Facebook and the internet about the floods in WNC.”

Breaking news: Republican voters don’t want to sleep in the bed they’ve made.

[–] EleventhHour@lemmy.world 50 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

While the politician can go screw himself, the effect of these crazy conspiracy theories is felt far and wide by regular people. It’s not just Republicans that are affected by this.

We should all keep that in mind.

Hopefully this time people will learn that baseball bats are the only solution for neighbors who spout Republican lies since their own personal safety is at stake.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago (4 children)

Look, I’m all for accountability. But right now, with respect to Helene and recovery/rescue efforts, is not the time. It’s a Good Thing (TM) that Republicans come out and denounce these falsehoods, because hopefully their base will listen. It’s important that in this, among other things, we learn to work together as a country.

Republicans come out and denounce these falsehoods

lol don't you know that once you go against the established hive-mind republican narrative, you're officially a RINO

this guy will be voted out immediately

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

But right now, …, is not the time.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 25 points 4 days ago (1 children)

other misguided quotes:

hopefully their base will listen

learn to work together as a country

the entire republican ideology is about NOT working together, but blaming problems on people they don't like and punishing them for it. this has been going on for years and years. we have republicans in the US congress saying democrats control the weather and intentionally wrecked WNC because it would hurt the republican vote

there IS NO "working together" with these people, i hate to tell you

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The majority Republican NC congress is the antithesis of the idea of working together for the public good.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 9 points 4 days ago

indeed. the NC house and senate are both full-blown republican, and they can't even agree with each other on a state budget

absolutely fucking useless

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

my wife and I visited my parents yesterday.

The base isn't listening.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

So does that mean it’s finally the time to talk about gun control? What about the failed violent insurrection at the Capitol?

Is it at least the right time to point out that Republicans want to dismantle the weather monitoring system?

Yeah.......it's good that they denounce these falsehoods...... Once it affects them!

It's convenient isn't it? Spread falsehoods about Haitians, or just saying nothing, but when those falsehoods start affecting them, suddenly it's time for restraint.

I'm sorry but Republicans have, at best, enabled the alt right monster. Biden is helping them. If he wants people to stop spreading falsehoods, he should have started with things that didn't affect him.

But then again if he did that, he'd be a Democrat.

You appeal to the worst conspiracy theorists out there to influence your voters and this is what you get.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago

“The biggest issue is rumors and fake memes and photos of people being trapped in areas around the county, and we send folks out to rescue them, and there’s no one there to be rescued,” Prather said, noting that such efforts require resources that could be used elsewhere.

Just wow. There's nothing more Republicans hate more than themselves. They rely on federal aid more than any other states but hate the government. They rely on government to save them from their poorly designed infrastructure but then make false reports of likily fellow Republicans trapped. Only to waste resources! Everything is projection for them. Don't want to give into your homosexuality, so you outlaw it and suck dudes off on the grayhound bathroom. Can't afford health care? Insure (pun intended) no one else can afford it either. On and on they go. Their belief system is a cult of self destruction.

Who is this Kevin Corbin? He is a low level senator that I hardly know. He came to me tears in his eyes and begged me for a job in 2025. I never heard of him before. Many people say he is a RINO. They said Sir! he is the most liberal Rebublican ever, even worse that LYIN LIZ CHENEY.

I love that Seth Meyers almost always includes 'tears streaming down his face' when doing a fake Trump speech. Because he says it all the fucking time. People just cry around him constantly apparently.

[–] whatalute@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Maybe people actually are constantly crying around him?? ...Maybe their eyes can't help but water up because of his reportedly horrible body odor.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Plausible.

“So if you take like armpits, ketchup, makeup, and a little butt,” Kinzinger replied. “It’s probably like that all mixed up.”

“That’s the Trump formula?” Kimmel quipped.

Kinzinger added that it is a “bit of a pungent odor I would say. You definitely wouldn’t want to bottle it up and wear Trump cologne. That’s for sure.”

Also the "big man, strong man" and "sir". He's gotten the energetic Trump down pat.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I look forward to it every time he impersonates Trump or Giuliani. They both crack me up whenever he does them.

[–] cybervseas@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Yes! Also I look forward to when he stops impersonating them because they've faded into irrelevance ♥️

[–] ozoned@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago

All I hear is

"Government bad! Government bad! Government bad!".

" WE NEED HELP FROM THE GOVERNMENT".

All while all the other assholes that aren't affected going "Government bad! Government bad! Government bad!"

And Vance and all the others making up stories and admitting to making up stories to help...just help someone else.

[–] vk6flab@lemmy.radio 24 points 4 days ago

Well it's a post truth world .. apparently, and I was always taught that the truth hurts..

Step 2: find out

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Well isn't this just a fine case of leopards eating your faces in the worst possible, yet predictable, moment.

The country singer Jon Rich, for example, told his million-plus followers on X, formerly Twitter, that a friend in law enforcement reported to him they had already “used over 500 body bags, and there are bodies in trees, mud, cars, houses, everywhere,” and that the federal government had provided no support.

Yeah, fuck that guy.

[–] kikutwo@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

Moron Mike Johnson just blathered more nonsense on Fox just now.

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 7 points 4 days ago

It's all fun and games until someone ~~loses an eye~~ gets hit by a hurricane.

[–] root_beer@midwest.social 2 points 3 days ago

Mayor Glenn “the Dubya Dubya Eff’s Kane” Jacobs of Knox County, TN, is doing the same thing. Look man, I don’t want people to have to suffer more than they already are, but you reap what you sow and if you want this to stop, you best be cleaning up the mess you made yourself.
