From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Open TV is an ultra-fast IPTV app that uses mpv for playback.

After rewriting the app in Rust (tauri specifically) for the last 3 months, Open TV is finally on flathub 🎊🎊

The app also now supports multi sources and other niceties.

If you use hypnotix or other IPTV apps, please give my app a try!

Like the app? Please consider donating. Open TV is a completely solo effort. It would help me allocate more time to its development.

Whats some good IPTV channels?

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 29 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There's... a lot, and it depends on what you define as good. This isn't a bad place to start: https://github.com/iptv-org/iptv?tab=readme-ov-file

Wow this was a whole rabbit hole I didn't expect to fall down. What's the legality of any of this look like?

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There's a large number of legal IPTV streams -- a lot of them are just the streams you would normally be able to access via Pluto, Plex, and other services. There's also a lot of public access/public media channels are legit and free All of the ones available at the link I posted should be legal. There are "pirate" IPTV streams out there, but I don't know any off the top of my head. I would check with the c/piracy community.

The really tricky part is getting an Electronic Program Guide (EPG) for free. Very few EPG providers are willing to give that away. You can roll your own for free but it's complicated enough that I basically gave up on it.

Wow, this is incredible. Thank you!

Yeah the EPG bit is very confusing. And even the guides are confusing; lots of assumptions on base knowledge.

Not really interested in piracy, just what I can quickly scan on that repo is interesting enough for me. Thank you very much!

Cool! You could refactor some use of the OS constant with #[cfg] directives.

This is cool! What made you start developing this?

Relatives using proprietary/borderline mslware/slow iptv apps. I wanted them to use something better

For real. I've been on a search for a good one and they are all sooo bad. definitely trying this one later.

Thanks man, there are dozens of us looking for something like this!

Never used IPTV before, how does it compare to say using Stremio with Real Debrid?

Also, thanks for contributing and sharing 🌻

[–] ECB@feddit.org 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

IPTV is generally for live TV channels rather than on-demand.

[–] Sunny@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 weeks ago

Ah I see, thank you

[–] Akuji@moist.catsweat.com 5 points 3 weeks ago

Cool. The interface is really simple in a good way.

[–] GenderNeutralBro@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I only have a vague understanding of what iptv is but I guess it's time to learn. This looks cool.

Streaming live TV. Think YoutubeTV or Hulu Live or Fubo

[–] corvus@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Great job! thanks for your effort. It seems that it overrides the default settings of mpv. I tried adding options in the box in the settings like --volume=50 but it doesn't work.

[–] Fredol@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Thanks. For the mpv params, that's a bug, I'll be looking into this.

[–] mfat@lemdro.id 2 points 3 weeks ago

Can't wait to try this!

I always used vlc for this purpose, download iptv playlist from GitHub and use it in VLC on any device
