I had an interview today for the exact sort of time I want at a place I'd be happy to work for. If that works out I'd start at the end of the month, so right when my 2 weeks pay from the old place would go up to.

If this works out I'm pretty much getting a 2 week holiday before starting work I actually enjoy

Fingers crossed mate!

Best of luck!

Got the news this morning but haven't brought myself to tell anybody yet so you'll be the first. I did the glucose resistance test last week and it seems I have type 2 diabetes. I felt fine during and after the tests so I thought maybe I'd be ok but apparently not so much.

It was almost inevitable, I think, considering dad and I are so similar and he has it. I'm still processing it though. I don't think I have any of the symptoms of it but no doubt if I don't start managing it they'll start popping up. This is my first real health issue. Never broken a bone or had to go to hospital besides normal infant stuff. Not as invincible as I suspected.

[–] Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 12 points 1 month ago

Definitely sucks getting old. My dad had type 2 as well. Diagnosed after multiple heart attacks & strokes. Type 2 can be managed with diet & exercise. It's not the worst.

[–] wscholermann@aussie.zone 9 points 1 month ago

The good news is that it's manageable and it doesn't have to stop you living your life. You will be ok.

Alrighty. One more sleep to the gig!

Now the excitement is building up 🎶🎸

Jesus christ it's fucking hot on this train. Sweating buckets. Poor dude near me looks like he thinks I'm a biohazard

Edit: bought a spare set of strings just in case. I'm glad I have a couple of hours after work to just chill out beforehand.

I hate this humidity too - but my plants are loving it. Last autumn I hacked my pot bound ginger lily into 5 pieces and planted each one in separate pots. This morning all 5 have put out new shoots as its finally warm enough and wet enough for it.

[–] Duenan@aussie.zone 7 points 1 month ago

I hate it as well. Hope it doesn’t get trapped inside.

Makes me feel yucky.

So I tried Five Guys last night

Fries = legit, still had a really nice texture even after a journey in the front of my scooter in the rain. Massive serving. There’s a station at the back of the ordering line where you can fill your own tubs of ketchup, mayo and malt vinegar, so your chips get sauces and stuff entirely to your liking

Burger = got a cheeseburger. Thought it was decent; probably not worth as much as it actually cost, but I did like being able to customise it fully for no extra charge.

Shake = basic vanilla for testing purposes, was thicc

I wouldn’t go out of my way to go to Five Guys again, but if you’re in the area it’s pretty solid fast food

Early night tonight. Goodnight everyone ❤️

[–] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 10 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Things are getting a bit busy at work, which is perfect timing, as my secondment to a higher position is coming to an end.

Now I can actually focus on what I'm doing and not sort out other people's issues.

Yay me!

Tinyest's language comprehension appears to have exploded. Still limited words back, but answers are starting to form. Last night I asked him if he wanted to get out of the bath. He shakes his head and says something similar to "nuh". I asked if he wants a bottle, he ponders for a second and goes "Yeh" and starts climbing out of the bath. Blew my mind. Didnt realize he was there yet.

[–] just_kitten@aussie.zone 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

"Are you ready for bed?"

Yeh... yeh nuh...

Wasted an hour this morning not being able to find my keys. Turns out they'd fallen into a boot. Well there goes my prep time for today's meeting...

[–] bacon@aussie.zone 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm always banging on about Thank God You're Here. They recently posted the best clip of the last 2 seasons on youtube, well worth a watch. I think the season finale is tonight.

Shitty photo sorry. This is corner of Toorak Rd and St Kilda Rd. 9.3m for 4 br apartment on noisy st corner. Hmm

[–] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Another building that will have no vacancies and no residents either.

[–] Nath@aussie.zone 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (5 children)

Loads of them in Southbank. Drive around that area around 7-8pm. Prime time of day for people to be home and awake. Entire apartment buildings are 75% dark.

I'm not certain whether this will be the same. I truly can't see how they can be valued at $9.5M. Who the hell is going to buy them? 4 Bedrooms suggests families. But any family with that much to spend isn't going to want their kids on a busy corner and no yard to run around in.

While it's derelict, there's a 4-bedroom house/yard going for $2M a few hundred meters away. You could spend a Million totally renovating that place and really sprucing it up and still move in before this building is finished. And for a third of the price.

This could be wild optimism on my part, but I really hope Gen Z can change workplace culture, and the world for the better.

Because I'm sorry to say Boomers really fucked it up. Gen X and Millennials raised by boomers are too damaged and drained to fight the man.

[–] tone212_@aussie.zone 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Millennial here and while I'm generalising, I don't think our generation is following in boomer footsteps in setting workplace culture. Although the biggest change to workplace culture in my lifetime has been thanks to a global pandemic, with the boomers now trying to pedal us backwards.

[–] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Biggest thing I've noticed with my millennial colleagues is that they see the job as a job and have very little loyalty to a 'company'. If the wages and conditions are right, they'll stay and work. If they're shit, workers will leave and find something better.

The boomer (and GenX to an extent) mentality is still very much 'find a job and stick it out'.

Until I started my current role (almost 7 years) my longest tenure before that was 3 years, over a 15 year career.

I would get asked in interviews about 'job hopping' and would simply say that I can handle a bad situation for so long. Mind you some of those were being made redundant, but older people couldn't believe I would leave a job.

As a proud Gen Xer (on the cusp, but still counts) I do my best to undo work place fuckery whenever possible.

Also try to call out and push back on entitled behaviour. That one applies to all generations.

I'm not going to practice tonight. I'm starting to get complacent.

One more practice tomorrow before the gig and that'll do.

Edit: even with a migraine I'm going. Not to tempt fate, but still.

Uni meeting didn't go as badly as i thought, but I've been feeling really out of it and congested most of the rest of the day. Brain really has taken a battering after the past few days and there's no rest in sight as I've got a major job ahead with cleaning up the house for inspection next week, and also starting to line up rental inspections myself (fuck that noise majorly, but I got no choice).

It's a real effort to try and relax and not constantly feel like I should be doing something

Two more weeks until I'm free from academic jail for the year, and I'm dying to visit some dive bars. Going to ~~force~~ gently nudge some friends and hopefully they'll be up for it. If not, I shall bring a book so I don't sit there awkwardly and enjoy the ambience.

Looking for recommendations for a good watch repair place in the CBD.

I replaced the movement but it turns out that I no longer have the eye sight / fine motor skills needed to put the watch hands back on.....

Being in my 50's is a wonderful thing.

[–] Nath@aussie.zone 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You want Bob Shao up on the corner of Russell and Little Collins. The store doesn't look like much, but he's the guy I took my watch to and was excellent.

Of course, he's easily in his 50's also - so don't try that excuse on him. 😃

Sister had her performance meeting today.

They just said she has a lot to learn because she's only been there for a year and she's the youngest in her team. They gave her no feedback on her actual performance. There are people in the same role who have been there longer and are earning at least 10k more than her. I hope she jumps ship soon and finds something better.

And today starts the journey to resetting my internal clock for work.

I know I fail almost everytime I do this but maybe I actually do it today.

I never managed to sort out the problem changing my bank account with the work payroll portal, they ended up having to enter it manually for me. So now my pay will be going to my shiny new savings account, earning 5% interest with Macquarie, instead of the boring old transaction account, which was about to have it's interest rate cut to 2.75%. I expected the biggest hassle would be changing all my automatic payments, the actuall payroll bit was supposed to be easy!

I had this plunger thing I bought from Daiso that was great for making scrambled eggs. The MIL managed to break it and she couldn't find another one at Daiso recently.

It was already a cheap plastic French press, so I'll see if I can find an actual French press and replace it with that

[–] Force_majeure123@aussie.zone 7 points 1 month ago (5 children)

I find the idea of using a plunger to scramble eggs way more repulsive than I should
