Going out for fancy breakfast this morning to a cafe near a post office. Nice food and the boys can post our council votes for us.

If I ran a cafe near a mailbox I'd do a post about it to remind people to send off their votes and come enjoy a coffee while you're at

If I ran said cafe I'd have an October long special of some overpriced cafe version of a sausage sandwich for that election day feel

My plan today: go to the market. My strategy is to give every member of the household a limit, say $40. The ones who want to spend more will negotiate with those who don't spend that much and it's great to see the kids in action making deals with their father and each other over who's getting what.

[–] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 10 points 1 month ago (5 children)

Always good to involve everyone in the budgeting. I learned from an early age to keep an eye out for specials, compare by unit pricing etc. to keep the overall food budget down - if you get the cost of the boring stuff lower you have room to add in important stuff like lollies!

When I moved out at 18 I discovered that most of my peers had no idea how to stick to a budget or prioritise their spending - an alarming number would run out of food entirely before the end of the fortnight, then when they got paid they'd waste it on expensive stuff and start the cycle again. I was really surprised, I'd been shopping on a budget and planning ahead with my Mum for years.

Ladies and gentlemen, enbies, kitties and potats...I am going to clean up from dinner and go to bed. I don't even care how early it is. I am stuffed. Night all

[–] just_kitten@aussie.zone 6 points 1 month ago

Ninigh. You gotta do what you need to to recharge. That's often more important than the "should"s we tell ourselves to do.

I'm gonna watch Fisk at 8pm and then call it a night too and do most of the cleaning tomorrow.

[–] Bottom_racer@aussie.zone 13 points 1 month ago (5 children)

Had some stuff done a few months ago on the roof. Turns out the dudes just cut the downpipe and used a brick to keep it in place without reconnecting it. I only worked that out the other day after that rain.

Was wondering why the rose next to it was having a great time:

Should be an easy fix (was just gonna use PVC glue and that PVC rubber tape stuff) but jeez a bit of a poor effort. Getting people in for such small jobs (or getting them back to fix their fuck ups) is hard today.

[–] PeelerSheila@aussie.zone 9 points 1 month ago

Stunning rose, but caused by the bane of all our existences: the slacklustre tradie.

I have some work to finish up before tomorrow but I am seriously thinking of just having a shower and going to bed. I am so tired today.

Same. I'm going to eat and read in bed till I fall asleep.

Overnight (our night) there have been strange reports coming in from agricultural hubs around the world. Cows and similar bovines appear to have all at once changed their signature "moo" sound, puzzling farmers, biologists, and even physicists. The sound these bovines are now making has been described as follows:

spoilerGOOOOOOOONseeGOOOOONseeGOOOOOOON

Edit: it appears that birds capable of producing human sounds have also begun what can only be described as a chant

So that's what woke me up this morning. Good to know so thanks Force. I was beginning to worry.

Why do people feel the need to use their most loudest voice possible when they are outside and only a couple of metres away from each other?

Mission for the morning. Queue for the closing day sale at the best pie shop ever. β€˜Tis an utter tragedy.

[–] PeelerSheila@aussie.zone 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Out of curiosity I googled "Melbourne pie shop closing down" and.. wow, so many! Too many in the past few years 😒(My local is hanging on, but business rental prices in my area have skyrocketed and a lot of shops that have been there for years have closed. Including my beloved computer repair guy who'd been there since 1986 or something.)

[–] Catfish@aussie.zone 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

These guys it’s both rent and ingredients. They refuse to use shit and would apparently have to charge $14 a pie to keep as is 😿

Victory! Well mostly. They are out of almost everything. Anyone not already in the queue will be disappointed.

[–] just_kitten@aussie.zone 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Very slow start to cleaning today but I've cleared out a lot of junk hiding in the kitchen (years of plastic packaging that I meant to throw at redcycle, old teas and boxes of nuts) and tidied under the sink which is the one set of cupboards I know they'll check with good reason.

Off to meet friend and try to keep spirits up...

I have Monday off, figured I'd do the vacuuming + mopping + mass laundry to get rid of cat hair that afternoon after sox leaves. When I get back today I'll just continue with the decluttering and wiping surfaces so that it looks neat and tidy enough. That's doable.

[–] imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone 8 points 1 month ago

I've got a few pretty politically conservative types in my extended family. Mostly we've always been able to have decent conversations but more and more it seems like the information they quote is so different from the information I see about the world I don't even know where to start. No ...I don't think Trump helped the American economy last time but I don't even want to start to explain why I think that. And no we are not being held back by Greenies .... I just can't even find common ground.

Imagine if the general public knew you could microwave potato... It would be so destructive to the status quo. Restaurants everywhere would be forced to close, who knows what other repercussions would be

Does anyone here own a weighted blanket?

Was thinking of one with the idea that it might help me sleep at night.

[–] Bottom_racer@aussie.zone 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Does anyone here own a weighted blanket

yeah but instead we call it existential dread. Still weighs heavily but it's free.

No, but I have a cat that likes to lie on top of me in bed. Does not help me sleep. Especially when purring loudly into my ear.

Attempt 2 at cat tower to commence shortly.

So the 2nd amp I grabbed to make a stereo guitar setup was a huge win!

Sounds so damn cool with an amp on each side.

Will photograph cat tower later. Pray for me.

Edit: putting in headphones helps drown out the noise of the agonising meows.

Sunday got unsurprisingly lit, surprisingly early.

[–] just_kitten@aussie.zone 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

So nice to have Fisk back on as a cozy Sunday night treat. Just lighthearted and relatable and low key. The North Melbourne trams are like their own character. Also: I have been guilty of steaming milk so loudly it sounds like a pig being slaughtered πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

Looking forward to Aaron Chen's character's grandma next week.

Speaking of other cozy shows I binge-watched Ludwig over the past two nights; nice little romp as well. Recommended if you like David Mitchell.

Shrinking S2 is on too and I'm looking forward to that on Wed/Thu now that Slow Horses s4 is over.

My only regular shift that they cancelled would've ended at 10. It's 11 and I just woke up. So nice to not be waking up at 6 on a Sunday.
