"What's your favorite flavors?"

"Blue and Black!"

[–] EABOD25@lemm.ee 26 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Do you like Cradle of Filth?

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 37 points 6 hours ago

They changed my life

[–] Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee 60 points 8 hours ago (5 children)

It's strange how us older ex-metalheads are the first different generation music wise

Our parents were horrified by our taste in music. Their parents were horrified by their taste in music, their parents were horrified by their taste in music

We're the first generation that listens to our kids' music and goes

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 2 points 50 minutes ago

That’s a testament to the tolerance of millennials. We are more open minded and will at least listen to what our kids have to say.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 5 points 2 hours ago

My mom likes metal now 🀷

[–] Absolute_Axoltl@feddit.uk 22 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

It's the same though isn't it? While it's not the reason why we liked the music we liked (more punk than metal for me but same difference) it was always a bonus if your parents didn't like it. That's exactly the reaction that kids are getting from their parents now!

[–] Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee 5 points 4 hours ago

It is! But I'm glad you understand what I meant!

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

Well there are two areas to explore here. The quality of the music and it's message. And the parenting we endured. I became a metal head for both reasons. My parents music didn't resonate with me. The over simplified music structure just bored me. There wasn't anything epic about it. And then the message didn't resonate when it was all happy rose gardens and unicorns. My dad was an abusive asshole. Metal gave me that angry outlet.

At least my mom understands where I come from even she doesn't understand why I listen to what I listen to. She divorced him and shit changed. Now my son loves metal and his mom doesn't get it.

I wasn't super into metal when I was a kid, I was more into funk and blues. But then my son decided to put on some garbage than he calls funk music. I was disgusted and promptly changed the song to sam and Dave.

I'm really into new metal bands though, because they are constantly releasing stuff. There are bands out there like Black Breath that will still melt your face off, but I really like the more experimental side of metal, with bands like Abstract Void, Unreqvited, and Botanist all pushing the envelope of what metal is.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 12 points 7 hours ago (8 children)

hit me with some brutal recommendations if you got them. it's been a while and I'm out-of the loop

[–] Astronauticaldb@lemmy.world 1 points 9 minutes ago

Not especially brutal, but a couple of the bands I've been listening to lately are Sabaton and The HU.

[–] CyanideShotInjection@lemmy.world 1 points 20 minutes ago

Some of my current favourites : Blood Incantation, Ulcerate, Worm, Civerous, The Ruins of Beverast.

Intent is awesome if you like Slayer

[–] pech@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

The most recent Cattle Decapitation album fucking shreds.

[–] bl_r@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Idk what genres you like so here’s a few recommendations across a few genres. On phone so no links.

I’ve been obsessing over HirΓ¦th lately, probably one of the best albums I have ever heard. It’s not a metal album, but it scratches that itch I have for metal, so it’s going on this list lol

  • Witching - Vernal (blackened sludge)
  • Flummox - Rephlummoxed (prog death/avant garde)
  • Mamaleek - Vida Blue (avant garde)
  • Rail Yard Ghosts - HirΓ¦th (Blackgrass/Blackened folk punk, large band)
  • Woe - Hope Attrition (black metal/RABM)
  • Botanist - Paleobotany (Experimental Black metal)
  • An Abstract Illusion - Woe (prog death)
[–] scapegarced@sopuli.xyz 3 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

I have lately been enjoying this one Osiah - Kairos

[–] TommySoda@lemmy.world 65 points 11 hours ago (6 children)

Five Finger Death Punch is as close as you can possibly get to pop music without leaving the genre of metal completely. I don't judge people if it's their jam, I just think they are extremely mediocre at best. It's no coincidence that the majority of their most popular songs are covers.

But hey, people like what they like.

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 12 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

Ghost is in the same boat. Don't get me wrong, they write some great songs, but they are perilously close to pop

[–] CyanideShotInjection@lemmy.world 1 points 13 minutes ago

To their defense, I think they are really self aware. The campiness and the theatrics are all intentional. It almost has a musical (the broadway kind) aspect to it. 5FDP actually believe they are hard.

[–] bravesirrbn@lemmy.world 31 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

I've seen Ghost described as "Spooky ABBA" and somehow it kinda checks out. Not even mad, ABBA is great and so is Ghost

[–] brognak@lemm.ee 1 points 8 minutes ago

"Bon Jovi for Goth Dads" is the other one I enjoy. I love Ghost, Tobias writes exactly the music he wants. Not trying to be metal, he was heavily influenced by og heavy metal (Sabbath) and the theatrics of the glam/hair metal era (Kiss). Combine the two and ya, that's just Ghost.

It's very intentionally campy and fun, like year round Halloween.

[–] Siethron@lemmy.world 20 points 8 hours ago (3 children)

I just feel like their songs are specifically targeted to edgy 13 year olds. "wrong side of heaven and righteous side of hell" I mean, c'mon.

[–] CyanideShotInjection@lemmy.world 1 points 18 minutes ago

The maturity of a 13 years old, but it's listened by angry genXers and older millenials.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago

Its called suburbia and nothing ever happens

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 5 points 3 hours ago

I mean, c'mon.

Right or wrong? I can hardly tell.

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 13 points 9 hours ago

I tend to like pop metal the same way I like pop punk. It's not going to make me feel anything but it's catchy. It's good for working out or working on the motorcycle and similar things where I want a driving background but don't want to get way into it.

That being said, the kind of people who listen to FFDP put me off of their music. It's like that's the first metal they ever heard then decided to make it their whole personality.

[–] zo0@femboys.bar 12 points 10 hours ago

I agree they are mediocre (at best), but as for sounding poppy, you're forgetting we have a whole metal subgenre called hair metal.

[–] fl42v@lemmy.ml 6 points 10 hours ago (3 children)

Well, there's also "punk goes pop" stuff, like the good old https://youtube.com/watch?v=gbMbCbEp5cA

[–] kshade@lemmy.world 1 points 4 minutes ago

Well, there’s also β€œpunk goes pop” stuff

My favorite. Those lyrics were surprisingly unsettling.

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 1 points 32 minutes ago

That is hilarious.

[–] curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 7 hours ago

A series I personally love listening to while working out. Especially the 80s pop covers.

[–] lowleekun@ani.social 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Sounds like metal gate keeping

[–] Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee 4 points 8 hours ago

As opposed to wooden gate keeping

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 13 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

It's not metal to drink a fruity drink?

[–] xx3rawr@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 hours ago

I drink filtered cattle blood (milk).

[–] dlhextall@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

No, you gotta drink beer all the time.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

I've got a keg of Zima and O'Doul's on-tap.

[–] AtHeartEngineer@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I find this funny because I only like technical death metal, like the pizza passage, sporeception, and sly cropped dick

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago

fruit punch will turn metal into marmalade
