Can they just release the report? Why is this guy still walking around free?

[–] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago

I have a suspicion the House is holding it over his head to keep him from swearing in for the next congressional session. He won his election this year, so he could just simply re-jiin the House even though he resigned for this term.

[–] tacosplease@lemmy.world 10 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

He can pull out now. But he may have already come a little

too close to getting the job. Might have blown it.

The house could birth an investigation that spawns many problems.

Shouldn't have been so childish.

[–] bamboo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 35 minutes ago

Tobias, you blow hard!

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

I appreciate the effort.

[–] affiliate@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

i wonder if he’s going to transition into being another annoying right wing pundit. he was always more of a talker than a doer in the house, and i can’t imagine him going back there because of the pending ethics report. maybe he’ll take pete hegseths place on fox news

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 58 points 6 hours ago (4 children)

Resigning from the 119th congress is essentially an admission of guilt at this point. Whatever is in that report will most likely remain sealed as long as he has the cover of being a private citizen once again, which is why he turned these two opportunities down - to keep the evidence of his wrongdoing under wraps so he can't be held accountable by either the public or the justice department.

So, Matt Gaetz is a pedophile and a child molester. And knowing the state of our shitty fucking country he's probably going to get away with it.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

And trafficker. I thought the qanon wanted to "save the children"?

Or is this just IOKIYAR?

[–] DerArzt@lemmy.world 8 points 3 hours ago

as long as he has the cover of being a private citizen

Man, if you get elected into ANY government office you shouldn't be able to be considered a private citizen.

[–] Suburbanl3g3nd@lemmings.world 4 points 3 hours ago

I mean, #metoo took forever to come around. I like to think in some future he'll get boned

[–] Draces@lemmy.world 7 points 5 hours ago

I'm hoping against everything else that Johnson will stop protecting him because he's now not worth anything to them now and isn't worth the political capital to protect 🤞

[–] sarcasticsunrise@lemmy.world 49 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

Alright Marjorie Trailer-Queen, time to nut up (🤮 sorry) and leak (it keeps getting worse) that incriminating info about your fellow GOPedo colleagues that you were so brazen about earlier

[–] Zess@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago

She got a hush appointment so she won't be talking about ethics reports anymore.

[–] pelican7663@lemmy.world 17 points 5 hours ago

She never had any intention of releasing anything. She was trying to keep the Gaetz report from coming out.

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 30 points 7 hours ago (6 children)

Weird. Either there's a 4D chess move here, or Trump doesn't have full control of the GOP like he wants.

That's going to cause problems.

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 25 points 6 hours ago

Or Gaetz is hoping that no further details from the ethics report leak, and he can salvage his career after this blows over. If it ever does that is.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Or Trump just named somebody he knew would have no chance and make the Left waste energy opposing him, so that they're more accepting of whomever he names for real.

[–] isaaclw@lemmy.world 2 points 53 minutes ago

Ugh. I know I'm more accepting. And disgusted by it :(

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 8 points 6 hours ago

I don't think the GOP was honestly expecting him to win.

not so quick, maybe you are running from something, we should look into that. We wouldnt wanna spend all that tax payer money on nothing.

[–] ATDA@lemmy.world 52 points 10 hours ago (3 children)

Whack the mole now so it doesn't show up somewhere else.

Please don't nominate him for anything else. He resigned from Congress. This could be incredibly hilarious.

Edit: and if any Democrat on the ethics committee doesn't leak the report they should all be primaried and removed from their posts.

[–] cAUzapNEAGLb@lemmy.world 80 points 11 hours ago (4 children)

Note that while he resigned from this current Congress, he did get reelected to the next Congress, so he'll still be a US rep in Florida once the session starts in late January. Just kind of an extended two month vacation really.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 91 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe not, according to https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/11/21/us/trump-gaetz-news/5e296b83-bf2f-50cc-96b8-5049b764b8a9?smid=url-share:

Absent extraordinary events, we do not expect to see Gaetz back in the House next Congress. When he submitted his resignation to the House last week after being tapped for attorney general, he wrote: “I do not intend to take the oath of office for the same office in the 119th Congress.”

It is always possible that Gaetz can invoke the ancient privilege of "SIKE!!!!" And take it all back. But then the ethics report will get released....

[–] fluxion@lemmy.world 34 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Unfortunately for him I mumbled "no takesies backsies" when he resigned so that's off the table

Huh. I would have thought they left him in, even if it was as a lightning rod to attract attention while the other nominees all got through.

Must have been he didn't want to be questioned too much.

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 36 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

I mean okay, I mean Trump will just pick something worse. I'm more disappointed that Democrats didn't grow a spine and just release the house report on Gatez.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

He's already announced his next pick. It's Carole Baskin

Anti gay marriage, anti health care... I gave up reading at that point... Didn't need to know anything more to know I can expect nothing good for the American people from her.

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world 2 points 35 minutes ago

We didn't need to read the article to know that.

[–] TunaCowboy@lemmy.world 34 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I'm more disappointed that Democrats didn't grow a spine

So you are perpetually disappointed, got it.

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 24 points 8 hours ago

Yeah, pretty much.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 51 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (11 children)

Gotta be something big to quit congress after being reelected and then decline the cabinet nomination used to justify pulling out.

This sounds like something serious. Someone should search his couches!

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago (8 children)

Paying minors for sex is hard time in prison. If evidence of such a thing became public the DOJ would essentially be forced to prosecute him. Right now they can just ignore it. Which they prefer to do because they like being employed.
