The crazy thing is we used to go after people over rumors that they were communist. The DOJ and other government agencies would steam roll people's careers, and make life miserable for the mere accusation of being communist (whether it was true or not). But a legit attempted coup to stay in power goes un-prosecuted.

The second he started making moves to stay in power after losing the election, he should have been arrested. In what sane world do you re-elect that person and then tell them they're now immune from prosecution.

It's the equivalent of a 5th grade I'm rubber you're glue argument.

I suspect that the reason Jack Smith dropped charges was so that jeopardy would not be attached. I'm not a lawyer but reading his statement read as an indictment against the Justice Department and the federal court system, begging them to either codify into law that Presidents are king or get rid of the rule to not charge sitting Presidents.

And I would be remissed if I didn't remind everyone that there is nothing in the Constitution saying Trump can't serve his criminal sentence in a state prison while also serving his term as president.

It was as clear then as it is now: right wing authoritarians will use any excuse to prosecute, jail, intimidate, and eradicate leftist values. They despise dissent, and cannot tolerate free thought or the exercise of rights against their power.

They're paranoid, fearful, unhinged, and they're coming for us again with the desperate grasp of a narcissist on their deathbed.

Yes, but that was directed at the left. The criminals in this case are right wingers, and therefore, it's fine. That's the inherent bias in the system.

Of course when the teabagging qanon magabrains go on about the "deep state", they are crying because they feel the system is not tilted ENOUGH against the left, probably because things like COINTELPRO etc had a bit of blowback and the schemes against the left receded just a tiny bit...everything with them is projection; if they see that the instruments of the state are not crushing the left, they assume it means they have their boot on the neck of the right (LOL, as if).

The SCOTUS immunity decision will echo even more

[–] PortoPeople@lemm.ee 1 points 3 weeks ago

It's the end of the Republic.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 40 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean it's not hard to know what happens when accountability isn't a thing anymore.

Spoiler Alert: everything turns to shit.

Why should we obey laws if our leader is a convicted felon who gets to bypass the punishment phase? Why should we ever respond to a jury summons for a sham justice system? Why should we pay taxes when our leader is a tax cheat?

Nothing matters now.

[–] PortoPeople@lemm.ee 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yup. Things will be different from now on.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 29 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

No. It has already been forgotten.

Just look at how many idiots (including around here...) keep insisting that the US Military will stand up against trump when he decides he wants a third term or some other complete shitting on of democracy.

We already went through this. But that would involve people remembering the Heroic Men And Women In Green sitting on their hands waiting to see how the POTUS trying to lynch the VPOTUS and murder Congress would play out.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Heads up: that only makes any sense if the person you are replying to said the word "if" anywhere in their post. Rather than "when".

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

You know what yeah, I've got no idea why I imagined the "when" to be an "if"

Probably wishful thinking

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago

It sets the tone for the remainder of the Republic. Perhaps a ruling as significant in outcome as the result of the Civil War.

Treason isn't a criminal activity.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, no kidding. Thanks to milquetoast "centrists" and the rabid right wing...

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 12 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Yeah, but not in the way it seems. There will be no absence of "accountability" there will be "accountability" it just will be Republican lead investigations lying about 2020 and arresting Democrats on false charges of "stealing" that election. They've already said that is the intention. They will not stop crying about 2020 and will use it as an excuse to go full authoritarian on their opposition.

This is a failure of the government to stop Trump's dad in the 1960s when he started skimming public money when building public housing. This is a failure of the government to stop Trump in the 1970s when he rented to whites only.

[–] thisphuckinguy@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Why are all the scumbags getting away with it?

Because they own the country

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The worst part is the Dems are going to be portrayed (rightfully? Idk) as complicit

[–] BlitzoTheOisSilent@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

I would say rightfully, yes.

[–] shoulderoforion@fedia.io 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

next four years? i'm pretty sure with the damage trump and his minions in, let me get this right, The Judicial, Legislative, and Executive branches of the United States Government squarely in control of Republicans, whatever we have four years from now, will in no way resemble what we've all grown up with and been taught about what America is, or was. what happened on November 5th is nothing short of destruction. so many people are about to die in so many placed by domestic and foreign, most will act shocked. i watched a million americans die from a purposefully inept and sandbagged global pandemic response, and that was before trump knew where all the buttons and levers are.

[–] NineMileTower@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

so many people are about to die in so many placed by domestic and foreign

What does that mean?

[–] korazail@lemmy.myserv.one 3 points 3 weeks ago

What does that mean?

This is the frantic typing of someone who is distraught; who has seen their country die and now has to live with the still-kicking remains.

That might be a bit hyperbolic, but to those of us with empathy for our fellow man, it's not a major stretch.

They mean to say that so many people are about to die in so many places, both domestic and foreign.

When I woke up after election night, I wept for the uncountable number of people who would die because of that one night. Some will be killed soon by having critical care fully enshrined as illegal because they are women. Some will die later, because their healthcare benefits are cut and they can't afford care. Some might die because they happen to have said the wrong things publicly. Many will die in a year, as we empower other fascists in other countries to do terrible things. Many more will die in a decade because of policies enacted by the incoming administration, which places vastly more importance on the increase in wealth of a few over the well-being of the many. And I can see a future where BILLIONS die because the people in charge prioritize power and money over the health of our planet.

The nation that I grew up believing in: the melting pot, the country that welcomed those in need has turned hostile and ugly. The first trump election was a fluke, a flaw in the system that allowed a "charismatic" "outsider" to gain power and abuse it. Biden's election was a refutation, though only barely, and seemed to show we were better than that.

Trump's re-election, however, is proof that we aren't better. Enough people couldn't be bothered to vote that we elected a criminal.

We, collectively, chose this and we will never be free of that legacy.

[–] EffortlessEffluvium@lemm.ee 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I despise Trump for just about everything, and my opinion goes back to the ‘80s. This is gonna piss a lot of people off, but Bill Clinton has a lot to do with this shitshow. While Ken Starr was an absolute tool for trying to get him for anything, Clinton getting up in front of everyone and committing perjury with zero remorse and then getting reelected anyway, showed that America (or at least the voters) has degenerated way too far from moral integrity (history of slavery notwithstanding).

Politicians lie. That’s a given. No way you reward them for their behavior.

[–] ysjet@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Well done, you managed to find a way to blame a Democrat for this. Very helpful.

[–] EffortlessEffluvium@lemm.ee -2 points 3 weeks ago

Actually, I blamed American voters for selling out over a lack of integrity.

[–] GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk 0 points 3 weeks ago

And did you know if you were caught and you were Smoking crack,
McDonald's wouldn't even want to take you back
You could always just run for mayor of D.C.

[–] Lemmywings@lemmy.cafe -1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I blame the democrats for it because Schiff and his band of attention hogs sought the spotlight and had to have their Jan 6th committee hearings cirklejerk. If they had appointed Jack Smith instantly then it would've gone to trial long before voters went to the polls. But instead they waited until November to appoint Smith and shot themselves in the foot in the process.
