This isolationist mentality of 'do not speak unless spoken to' is one of the more repulsive aspects of modern society. It either implies that only certain people should be worthy of the privilege to initiate conversations, or that nobody should be able to outside of required interactions dictated by circumstances of business or socially mandated exchanges.
Are people so disturbed that anyone would speak to them? There's no hope for improvement of the fractured society we live in if every message needs to be filtered through a screen and displayed to a pre-determined audiance.
I think it may be that a lot of women don’t enjoy the kind of unwanted attention due to their being sexualized from a young age, or that is what I have been told by many women I have talked to about their experiences.
And their experiences are valid, but the response doesn't need to be such an aggressive do-not-approach mentality.
