Is a hippopotamus a hippopotamus, or just a really cool opotamus?

There's a start. The US is far from perfect, but at a baseline we don't have overt state sanctioned ethnic or theologic cleansings.

I'd buy into that point if I saw even a fraction as much effort put into pushing out Xi, Putin, or even Netanyahu as I ever do people arguing against the nominee for the US democratic party. Hardly a word against the ones actually doing the killing and war crimes, but lots of blame for a US presidential candidate...

The first restrictions would be more a 'wink and nod' restriction. If the US came out and said go ahead and have fun then Russia get's a green light to say it's now a war with NATO at large.

Israel, now that's a more 'WTF are you doing' situation. Israel for all practical purposes is a direct surrogate of the US and not already entangled with Russia, and better off keeping it that way. Be even better off if they would stop trying to expand their borders by removing neighbors too, but you can pretty well guarantee that expanding their war won't help anything for anyone.

We make fun of Trump and anyone who supports him for being a terrible person and a genuine idiot. Vance used to denigrate him too, now he's the running mate (and notorious couch fucker) so we rip on him as well.

We like Kamela since she's not a terrible person or a generally raving lunatic/narcissist.

Do you see the difference in these two situations?

A vote is a vote, but that's not the solution I spoke of. Rather than trying to push people to disengage or vote 3rd party, neither of which will make any meaningful difference to the situation (even in the million to one chance some 3rd party did get elected, they're a politician and will do politician things), why not take the situation into your own hands and create the company run by someone who won't behave like a capitalist?

Create the next Google, but you can be the one who really follows the "don't be evil" mantra and in the process usurp the throne from the capitalists who have gone wrong. Once that is done you have the ability to simply hand the reigns over to anyone working there and walk away knowing the problem of that particular market is now solved.

The amusing thing about the people who complain that capitalists are the root of all problems, they don't make an effort to correct it.

Take the situation of this story. If your ideals are pure and would have the popular support of a critical mass of people, there is absolutely not one thing preventing the establishment of a company, chartered as a public good corporation, and ran as a non-profit entity to provide these kind of material goods for people at cost, or if someone is willing to subsidise the production even less so if you like. You could even get the seed money from a crowd sourced campaign, or so called 'angel investors' no strings attached, no ownership stakes to distribute.

The things they promise to do like segmentation and 2FA should very well have been in place for the most part already. Sounds like a lot of 'just try harder' to me

I haven't particularly looked for one recently, but you could accommodate a lot of that with a simple mouse that uses standard AA batteries. Nice to be able to swap without it having to be some special type, but he one I had was some cheap thing that broke quick.

Universities will also have to add mandatory antidiscrimination training for students under the laws, which were introduced by Jewish lawmakers with the aim of counteracting antisemitic harassment that has reportedly spiked on college campuses since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel last year.

Wow, way to keep the tone and framing of the report balanced there Politico. Have to mention in multiple paragraphs about how Hamas attacked and what the Jewish legislators did and thought. Then the phrasing 'yet the ACLU contested...' to indicate just how bizarre and shocking their contention is...

I get that essentially every news org has an opinion and position these days, but can you at least try and make some semblance of not trying to spin things that much? A story can only take so much centrifugal force before it rips itself apart.

He wasn't 'stuck with' but rather wasn't confident they could fill a proper arena. People tire of the same old schtick day in and out of complaining about imagined ghosts and deep state conspiracies. I've noticed even some of the most dedicated Q-cultists around here have started softening their support and sheepishly walking back their claims.

Hey all,

So I'm looking to take an active step here to understand better some things that my straight/white/cis/middle-aged male brain has had a tough time wrapping itself around, particularly in the gender identity front.

I'm working from the understanding of physical sex as the bio-bits and the expressed identity as being separate things, so that part is easy enough.

What's confusing to me though is like this. If we take gender as being an expression of your persona, a set of traits that define one as male, female, or some combination of both then what function does a title/pronoun serve? To assume that some things are masculine or feminine traits seems to put unneeded rigidity to things.

We've had men or women who enjoy things traditionally associated with the other gender for as long as there have been people I expect. If that's the case then what purpose does the need for a gender title serve?

I'll admit personally questioning some things like fairness in cis/trans integrated sports, but that's outside what I'm asking here. Some things like bathroom laws are just society needing to get over itself in thinking our personal parts are all that special.

Certainly not trying to stir up any fights, just trying to get some input from people that have a different life experience than myself. Is it really as simple as a preferred title?

Edit: Just wanted to take a second to thank all the people here who took the time to write some truly extensive thoughts and explanations, even getting into some full on citation-laden studies into neurology that'll give me plenty to digest. You all have shown a great deal of patience with me updating some thinking from the bio/social teachings of 20+ years back. 🙂
