I'm noticing that YouTube video's thumbnail and title can't be fetched somehow. In theory this should work, right? See the post and my comment below:
Meta (slrpnk.net)
Here we can discuss anything about this Lemmy instance/server itself.
Our XMPP support chat: Movim or XMPP client.
Ever since Lemmy implemented the full image proxy there have been loads of random issues with thumbnail creation. Supposedly the latest release fixed them, but the devs claimed so also for the last two releases to have fixed the issues π€·ββοΈ I tried for a while to find some pattern and report it, but it seems pretty random.
I think I know the culprit, see my comment here: https://slrpnk.net/post/16303676/12737230
The fix seems to be just merged few days ago. Hopefully this time it's actually fixed
Anyone else getting a lot of broken images lately?
PS: Great post, forgot to say it earlier because I was going to write something longer but never did.
Lately as in since a few months? The full image proxy is definitly buggy and causes issues with thumbnail creation and sometimes when you are the first person to open an image there is a slight delay and other such random issues. Also if the remote image is bigger than our upload limit (10mb if I remember correctly) it will fail to load.
I don't think these are issues caused by our setup specifically but rather upstream bugs, but not too many other Lemmy instances run the full image proxy so it seems low priority to find and fix these issues.
Upgrade to Lemmy 0.19.8 completed.
Our theme also got a rename, so you might have to change it in your settings to htl-* to get back to the same look.
Great post!
I was wondering is there a way to help this instance with tech skills, testing, organizing tasks, writing documentation or something like that?
We have a /c/meta community and a wiki for documentation purposes. If you have a good idea what to improve or change feel free to open a thread and we can also give wiki edit permissions.
We also do a monthly brainstorm for this sticky thread with the admins and active community moderators on our XMPP chat and draft it via our Etherpad service.
Our technical setup is a bit complex and somewhat documented here. Direct access to the server is obviously limited to very few trusted admins.
I notice that communities in this instance prefers to post links. Wouldn't it be nice if we post more discussion/question types of post?
Be the change you want to see π
Cool post.
Former emt Just jumping in on the first aid section: great writeup. I just wanted to double click on the "get educated" part of first aid. For example, a tourniquet is an incredible device, but it is very very dangerous if used incorrectly.
Know this: if a tourniquet is needed, and you apply it, it is not temporary. It is not a bandaid. It should not come off until you are in a hospital. It will fucking hurt. The limb it is applied to is in great danger, and higher level medical care needs to be sought ASAP. A normal person, especially one suffering shock, will not be able to walk on a tourniquet 'ed leg.
The only proper place for it to be removed is a hospital, because the implication is that there is work to be done to stabilize the wound and repair the vein or artery which is causing the serious bleeding.
Anyway to be clear I'm not criticizing the writeup at all. It's excellent. Just hammering home that gear you can buy on the internet can have serious consequences, and should be well understood.
P.S. Another one is suture kits. It's attractive to imagine you can stitch up a wound and keep on trucking, but outside of hospital conditions, you may have just created an infection pocket. If you MUST self/field suture, know that you must rigorously clean the wound, debriding any solids (like sand, or metal fragments) out, and ensuring trapped fluids can drain away. All while maintaining sterility.
Really I'm giving medical "advice" of risks, not best practices. I'm highlighting consequences, not telling you what to do. Get trained, and if you need to do more "serious" stuff, know that you still very much need a hospital or at minimum, equipped higher level pro such as a doctor.
Trump's election was a bad day for us non-Americans as well, don't worry. However, let's not forget to look to the positive as well. UK has finally stopped with populism as well as Poland. A coup attempt was thwarted in South Korea as we speak. And while I am anxious of my own country (France) as today the government is likely to be dismissed, and that the far right is in the starting blocks, the fight still goes on.
I too think that social networks are one of the most crucial tools to build a society of tomorrow and in a more immediate sense to fight fascism. It has been hard to see the exodus from Twitter to Blusky which I think will probably go the same way as Twitter did. But it is hard to criticize it too harshly as leaving Twitter is a very urgent thing that should have been done the day before yesterday.
Nothing much to add to your post. Hang on, take care and make sure to tell us when we can participate and donate to help this server.
To all the US friends, we know that not every US citizen is a Trump fan. But please resist as much as you can. Don't get complacent. Don't think it will just go away. Half of the US population is fine with Trump. Even more if you count all those that didn't care enough to vote. Resistance can be about buying guns, but it's also about cultural battles.
During World War II, French resistance had a motto: RΓ©sister, c'est crΓ©er. CrΓ©er, c'est rΓ©sister.
Resistance is an act of creation and acts of creation are resistance. The most effective and the most motivating way to resist is in building the society we should have and not the mere compromise that existed while fascists were a bit under 50% of the votes.
~~Is the '!inperson' link needing to be fixed?~~
Thank you for writing this. It's more important than ever for people to have a source of hope, help, and inspiration amidst the darkness.
Thanks! Fixed the link.
Quick addendum to the Acquiring the means to keep yourself safe section:
In addition to Pepper spray and learning self-defense, consider acquiring body armor to keep yourself protected and alive. This can range from sports equipment to defend against batons and other melee weapons, all the way to ballistic armor to protect against pistols or rifles. This article gives a pretty excellent overview of what you should look for, where you should get it (including one leftist armor maker!), and even briefly covers DIY armor if you're on a tight budget. Be sure to follow that up with a good helmet, and if you can, a gasmask too.
All useful information.
I would add some notes. They are somewhat haphazard, I apologize, it's 3 at night here. :)
In a protest setting, where police might use non-lethal weapons, protective equipment can save the day repeatedly. It also protects well enough against thugs with clubs.
But if lethal weapons are used, even the best armor often fails and everyone is too fragile, despite having armor. Generally, in such conditions, other factors (awareness, coordination, range) determine outcomes.
Generally, quite soon after armor has proven useful, an age-old pattern emerges: competing factions erect barricades. At that point, much depends on what the population thought before that - whether the population is willing to support and supply protesters, or maybe even sabotage attempts to suppress them. If the population is "meh, it's not my fight", for a protester, that is bad news.
Needless to say, it's best if peaceful mass protest can occur before this stage, and show great numbers. Srdja Popovic (whose colleagues helped remove Milosevic in Serbia, but it took them ages and required external help) makes several good points in Blueprint for Revolution. If a protest has no risk of violence, grannies and people with kids show up. Critical mass is shown and vital communication lines are established this way, police are aware that they will lose popularity fast if they initiate violence. Various factions will try to propose leaders, leaders will try to propose strategies and tactics. However, mass protest could lose momentum or fragment into non-cooperating factions. One way to protect a movement against loss of momentum is to build an organization that gathers resources and funnels them into the struggle, and to have achievable waypoints before a distant final goal. This way lies politics.
Another way out of mass protest is for protesters to attempt subverting power structures at a rapid pace - typically after gaining confidence of having overwhelming numbers, something which the phase of peaceful mass protest seeks to demonstrate. This way lies revolution, with a far greater risk of violence. It's best not to go there without really having overwhelming numbers, and a clear message of how chaos will be short in duration (most populations in a tumultous situation desperately look for a message of how chaos will be over, and it's best if a rotten government ain't the only place offering one).
In the interest of building my own mutual aid networks, I have started a new community I would like to call attention to.
I would love to start some discussions with the Solarpunk brain-trust on my favorite topic.
Like and subscribe, etc.
My goal is to facilitate discussions online that motivate real life changes for me and everyone else who cares about their yoga practice.
Hope to see you there.
also !solarpunkstrength@slrpnk.net is a cool place to hang out. It might be worth us merging.
Anyway, we are sleepy, but I try to post meal prep ideas an some workouts.
I will cross post to that community. Yoga has definitely changed my body for the better. Feeling so strong has been a huge boost to all areas of my life!
However, I resist the idea of merging. Yoga is much more than a physical exercise. The physical act of βdoing yogaβ is only one part of a whole system of philosophy that is very intricate.
I am seeking to build a space and a community of people who value that philosophy and like to get down and dorky with it. The fact that I have awesome abs and a world-class butt is a side effect that I am supposed to be too evolved spiritually to care about. ;)
No worries - I just thought I would extend the offer. I don't actually run the place but had a very similar idea as the mod and jumped in head first when I saw he made a community.
Anyway we are trying to incorporate a bit of the philosophy side too, but understandably not as much as what you're probably hoping for.
Since we are not a registered non-profit or so, we cannot provide you with a certificate for tax deductions though
Consider opencollective :3
I am working on a customized fosspay fork that also has OpenCollective integration. Might be an option, but right now the extra fees that causes would be really only worth it if there are many people from the US that would really like those donation certificates.
Thanks so much for the thorough and inspiring post. I'm hopeful things won't be as bad as I fear they will, but preparation is a key part of prevention.
I also look forward to donating what I can to the instance.
This is a discussion thread right? I hope I am asking this in the right place
I am thinking about opening a community about public transport/transit here. My questions are:
- how do I promote it so it gets more audiences and it doesn't become empty?
- how do I find moderators for the community? due to many things it's possible that I am not always available moderating it
Crossposting into communities like /c/urbanism can help promote a community.
I think for moderators it is best if you look for people that start posting or commenting in your new community and ask them via DM if they want to help moderating it.
