Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

This is a privileged problem that I am having a hard time relating to.

Okay, but people with the means to travel for leisure exist, and in the US it doesn't even seem to be a small group.

Seems like encouraging these people to avoid air travel, or encouraging airlines to do something about their emissions, is generally a good thing.

Well if that isn't a complete out of touch article I don't know what is.

It's NYT, out of touch op-eds is their brand at this point.

  • get rid of airline companies
  • switch to renewable energy
  • switch to airships
  • give us enough time off to enjoy airship travel

I'm curious, what's the advantage of airships? Are they like blimps?

[–] cerement@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 days ago
  • most lighter-than-air vehicles are airships – so yes, blimps, dirigibles, aerostats, and zeppelins are all airships
  • tend to be a lot more fuel efficient (estimated 8% of jet aircraft) since fuel is used just for propulsion not lift and propulsion
  • as well as having some truly monstrous lifting capacities
  • don’t need runways, can land in a field or anchor to a fixed mast
  • biggest con is they are slow – which wouldn’t be a con in a solarpunk future, but in today’s society where we’re lucky to get two weeks vacation and your airship trip takes a week in either direction …
