As much as they like to criticize other countries, France hasn't gotten rid of their imperialistic habits, particularly in Africa. They just switched from direct control to economic control.
Most of France's former colonies in Africa are forced to use a currency called the CFA Franc, and France controls its value. France uses this control to pressure these countries to mainly trade with France.
This doesn't excuse the shitty behaviour in other countries, but France doesn't get to act all high and mighty when the topic turns to imperialism.

We absolutely do rely on the US having the biggest stick to keep other aggressive global powers in check.
The US may the worst amongst developed countries, but to people in developing nations, its actually not a terrible place to live.

Perhaps not all do. Many (not most) people in foreign countries still hold on to the hope that they can come to America and “succeed”. A good case in point: many of my Indian tech worker friends in the US and their opinion on the H1-B visa debate. They are overwhelmingly on Elon Musk’s side (in fact, many of them worship him) of that debate despite the fact that Musk uses captive H1-B visa people to run a legal sweatshop in the US. The US loves to perpetuate that opportunity myth as a way to attract scab laborers from poor counties.
We can't afford to live, and can't afford to move to get out. The majority of us are wage slaves.
Many of us want to come stay with you. Better shore up your immigration policies!
And yet most people living in Europe are happier, safer and live an overall better life.
GDP is cool, unless 99% of it goes into someone else pocket and he decided not to share.
The idea that money-per-human is the chosen metric for success, says a lot already.
I would rather live in Germany than the poorest US state (or even the richest US state for that matter)
I moved from Connecticut to Germany and I’m very happy about it.
