Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

US*

I'm pretty sure research in Canada and the rest of America doesn't become less scientific because of Trump

Don't come to Canada - we're about to get a pretty extreme Conservative government, and they were notorious for censoring science, especially climate science, last time they were in power.

Dont you have a Parliament that would prevent this?

The US only has two viable parties, and they're both conservative. Canada has several viable progressive parties actually sitting in Parliament.

Every election in 2024 has had incumbent parties lose vote share or lose elections. Canada is going the same way.

Also the current governing Liberals are center to center-right by European standards.

That's concerning. Maybe as the US starts locking up progressives in concentration camps, the influx of refugees will drag Canadian politics to the left?

That would be nice. But historically Canada has been content to be slightly leftward of the USA and to congratulate itself for it. If Mar-A-Gulago comes to pass, Canada will probably be happy with some intimidation and silencing of progressives. At least it's not USA!

I wonder what happened to Canadian politics when a bunch of leftitst anti war US draft dodgers migrated there in the 60s

It's too bad science doesn't have the power these idiots think it does (it's just a process anyway, like running). It might actually decide that they aren't with keeping alive. Alas, it does not have sentience or power.

dude if you rely on government funding and your work involves anything other than either exploiting poor people or blowing up brown people, or both, then you're in for a rude awakening when the trumpistan agenda is in full swing

From my brief time in academics, it was my impression those types of researchers were already hamstrung for support

they are! hence american college campuses being so unwilling to divest from israel. for a lot of universities, that and DARPA are the only sure ways of securing funding. the reality is that our global need to steal mineral resources to fund our comforts also cost us, and not just the foreign countries we directly harm. you are actively fed by acts of violence. our entire financial system is underpinned by the conflict minerals sitting underneath blood soaked soil. i'm not even saying if you buy groceries at the store or live on stolen land you need to change your way of living. that's literally almost everyone on earth. what i'm saying is that you need to get on board with that the people those resources are stolen from are just like you. you need to do everything in your power to help them because all of this machinery of violence runs on blood. when any active genocide runs out of people to kill it will turn on some other demographic to focus on. eventually, it will come for you unless you resist it, fight it. not a single one of us can do anything to stop all this alone. our best bet is to band together and communicate truth in our communities

Don't move to Canada, we're about to have Lil'PP doing the censorship thing like his mentor did!
