Edit: I had someone comment one time when I did, and it was kind of weird and embarrassing? But it seemed like a fairly normal thing to do, so I thought I'd ask.

Yes. Excess of green or yellow mucus could be indicative of strep throat or a cold. If there's bleeding, that's a sign of worse.

[–] arsCynic@beehaw.org 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Blood is most likely just a minor nosebleed due to nosepicking or simply vulnerable tissue. No need for panic. If it happens more often than not, then simply check with a doctor. And still no need for panic.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My left nostril bleeds pretty much every time that I blow full-blast. I have to be gentle to avoid it.

[–] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

I had a nosebleed for hours which would barely stop without full pressure pinch. I was at the ER waiting for hours and the doctor finally saw me and didn't think it was an issue worth treating as I was asking for it to be cauterized. I simply exhaled through my nose at a normal level and it started bleeding again. She went out and got the silver nitrate to burn it without another word.

Just checking for blood

[–] Naich@lemmings.world 62 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Are there people that don't?

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 27 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yes, and they're either sociopaths, or were born with a critical lack of curiosity.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (3 children)

Okay this is entirely unrelated but your "born without a lack of critical curiosity" really hit home for some reason.

Whenever I go to a store that has stuff I find generally interesting, I feel the need to touch it, just so I know what it feels like. I had an ex who hated whenever I did that, like she thought I was a toddler trying to look at and buy everything. It really made me feel bad.

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 days ago

My dude, that rings super true for me. I'm very.... textural? I'm not going to buy something if it feels shitty to touch. Most of the foods I don't like taste just fine, but I don't like how they feel in my mouth.

Don't feel bad about it, you're not alone, and even if you were, that's really got to be one of the stupidest reasons I've heard to be pissed at someone.

If you ever have a partner, friend or family member who does sewing/knitting/similar, you should tag along with them on a fabric/yarn shopping trip; I bet you'd have a lot of fun. Some people are just more tactile, and leaning into that isn't harmful and can help a lot of fun

[–] tomi000@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I smell everything I grab. Sometimes my wife comments on it but it doesnt bother her. We use our senses to make sense of the world, big news.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I don't smell everything I grab, but I smell everything I eat before I put it in my mouth. Imo though it's not like a neurodivergent sensory thing, I just like smelling good food before I eat it; kinda like a palate preparation.

[–] half@lemy.lol 22 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Lots of people talking about monitoring health, I just look because I'm curious lol

[–] Omega_Jimes@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago

In the modern day, sometimes it's just nice to be able to say "I did that!".

Same reason I look in the toilet.

[–] Vanth@reddthat.com 7 points 3 days ago

Someday there might be brains there, so I agree!

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 39 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah man, gotta know if there's blood or not.

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

If the heat is running, we’re playing a dangerous game.

[–] qyron@sopuli.xyz 26 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Yes. And we always should. The colour of what is coming out can hint how far/how bad you might be on a cold, as well as the consistency. Knowing if you're losing blood or clots is also important.

Yes, I need to make sure that what's in the tissue matches what I felt fly out of my nose so I know it's not stuck in my beard.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Or 'stache.

But also, it's kinda satisfying to see the huge chunk of hardened snot that's been bugging the ever living hell out of you most of the day.

To be fair, your username kind of suggests you want to look inside everything anyway

Right you are!

If I didn't look how would I know what kind of infection I have?

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

If I feel something more solid than snot hit the tissue, I'll check.

You never know when it might be bloody sinus tissue again.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 20 points 3 days ago

Maybe this time rubies came out, I won't know until I check

Yeah, kinda helpful in monitoring health.

You won't find anything unusual 99% of the time, and usually not even when you add .9 with a bunch of extra 9s behind that. But when you do find something, it means you can be proactive in handling it.

Not that everything shows up in mucous that can be wrong with your sinuses, or that things can't ramp up faster than you can detect a change.

But it's still useful to check.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

If it's yellow you got some sinusitis, probably need some Sudafed (behind the counter kind) and some neti pot. If it's green, you may have to go to the Dr to get some antibiotics. If it's red, you probably need a humidifier and/or some saline mist.

Yes, for three reasons.

  1. I judge the color to be sure I'm not getting sick and it's just a regular need to blow my nose.
  2. I check for the presence of any blood, since I work around materials and in environments that can cause alot of dry air, giving me a higher incidence of nose bleeds.
  3. My work environments are very dusty, and if Inhave alot of black or grey dust when I blow my nose, I know I need to clean my airways when I get the chance so the dust isn't in there longer then a day.

Every single time. I just like it.

95 % of the time. I don't if I'm in public and in close proximity to someone.

[–] Coreidan@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Ya. Don’t you care at all about your health? Why wouldn’t you check?

Yes, maybe a Burglarobbit came out me nose, gotta check.

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's like looking after you have a bowel movement. It's normal.

[–] modus@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

But do you really have to show your friends every time?

[–] Vaggumon@lemm.ee 5 points 3 days ago

I hold the folded tissue up to the light, if I see color I double check, if not, then no. Also I usually only do this if I feel a reason to, like feeling sick, or like it may have been a bloody nose, etc.

[–] NorthWestWind@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Yes. The color of the mucus is informative for Chinese medicine. I don't have the full details of it, but if it's transparent, that means you are dealing with "cold" infection, and you should use herbs that are "hot". Oppositely, yellow means "hot" infection, and you should use "cold" herbs.

If you use the wrong herbs and fail to balance it out, the infection gets worse.

[–] criitz@reddthat.com 3 points 3 days ago

I don't. I felt it come out, I know what it's gonna look like.

[–] weeeeum@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yes, cause I work in a dusty environment. If you see dust or particulates in your snot, thats in your lungs too and you should start wearing a respirator.
