That’s surprisingly low.

Definitely would make me not pay knowing that stat.

You're surprised criminals have no honor?

[–] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 weeks ago

I am when not having honour destroys the scam

I always heard that the criminals would restore the data, else they kill their own business plan. So this is surprising to me.

I came here to say this. If I have only a 7% chance of recovering my data after paying, I'm better off not paying.

I work in this field for a living. This number is bullshit, most organizations get their data back after paying...

Think about it. What is in the criminal's best interest

I answered my own skepticism:

According to a recent survey by Hiscox Group, a Bermuda-based insurance provider

That's a pro move.

I'm calling bullshit. That number is provided by an insurance company.

[–] IllNess@infosec.pub 1 points 2 weeks ago

This would benefit them if they have to cover data loss. They increase insurance fees.

Hmm, I've always heard the opposite, and that they even go so far as providing tech support to help restore the data after paying. If word got out that they didn't restore the data after paying, no one would pay.

why does the text in the embed talk about generative ai?

[–] TarantulaFudge@startrek.website 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah I'm surprised because my understanding was a lot of businesses were paying so it's hard to wrap my head around why someone would want to do that now.

This number is a lie.
