Sometimes we have those little epiphanies in the shower.. sometimes they come from other places. This is a home for those epiphanies.

[–] specialseaweed@sh.itjust.works 3 points 8 hours ago

fine i'll post more

[–] vonbaronhans@midwest.social 6 points 10 hours ago

Hey I leave comments. And half decent ones at that!

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 2 points 8 hours ago

Don't forget the spambots

Could you collect data and show us a chart?

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 11 points 17 hours ago

There are dozens of power users but I think there are some users that are encountered frequently in some places, particularly in communities that are local to the user. It would be neat to know if I have any notoriety at all. I'm easiest to spot on lemmy.ca communities if anywhere.

I've noticed a handful of users become active, inactive and active again, whether it's life stuff or whether they got temp banned. I won't provide any examples because I don't want to make this about someone's personal life.

This place never needs to be as big as reddit, just the fact there is a "stream" of users posting and commenting makes Lemmy feel alive. It was much quieter when I first joined (a few months prior to the creation of Lemmy.world), there might have 10-20 new posts a day on the whole site. I'm happy with it.

I'm pretty sure Picard Maneuver is lemmy's main character

[–] zabby@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 7 hours ago

I'm always looking for their comment on every popular post 😂

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

I ship stamets and kolanki.

pretty standard for forums.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 10 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

40? There's one guy with multiple accounts.

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

It’s all one guy. Giant guy in outer space!

[–] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 3 points 13 hours ago

More like giant squid. Who happens to be flying. Occasionally he forgets to change accounts before posting.

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago

One of 40 reporting for duty!

[–] DaMonsterKnees@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago

And? Small community, big heart, I say.

[–] MeatPilot@lemmy.world 10 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I post randomly and without logic to confuse the sand worms.

[–] droporain@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Your sand walk is horrible.

Ive found that any george strait style waltz beat throws off the graboids completely.

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

For all you know, they can fly.

[–] FrowingFostek@lemmy.world 7 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

It's true, I told myself I'd post more often but, lurking is a habit.

[–] Gorgritch_umie_killa@aussie.zone 4 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I's exactly the same as you. Big Lurker. I exhuded much lurk energy.

I think where we differed is i made an active decision to mod a community. And held myself accountable as if i have a responsibilty. Importantly i decided to be an active supporter and user of said community. I branch out a bit now, but my overwhelming set of activity is in the niches.

It seemed possible, Lemmys small enough, and my niches are plenty small enough to not feel overstretched.

As a Lemmy Worlder the perspective must be different though for you. I was talking to /u/Blaze@feddit.org about this a few weeks back, and he said it feels much more like reddit on the large lemmy instances. I imagine that must make it seem overwhelming? unnecessary? (You'd have to tell me), to think about modding communities as an avenue to getting actively involved.

[–] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

it feels much more like reddit on the large lemmy instances.

Definitely. By the way, how is your guys delay with Lemmy.world? It is solved?

[–] Gorgritch_umie_killa@aussie.zone 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

You know, i's gona say its mostly not been an issue, like i think we're down to a few hours, but then i tried to find the last time the LW lag time was spoken about on the local c/meta and i can't see the discussion i'm thinking of.

So i think we're pretty good now, i don't know i need a Lemmy Worlder to come and comment on something to test it ;)

[–] Gorgritch_umie_killa@aussie.zone 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Wow! This is new! For me, i mean. That'll be useful to keep track of cheers!

Yeah, LW is a little problematic. It'd be interesting to read the LW admins and mods take on this. Whether they feel stretched, or see the issues the smaller instances see, or whether their size and centralised role is what they like.

The only thing i remember from a ways back is the admins have an express mantra of user growth.

[–] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I just chatted with someone on the LW staff, things are progressing.

Interesting, so i take from that, they see some issues themselves. Be interesting to see what actions they take with that in mind.

For my own interest just looked on lemmyverse.net.

I knew they had a lot of communities, but at 10,612 communities, phew, who is modding all of that!

[–] Bronzie@sh.itjust.works 5 points 14 hours ago

Same.

Oftentimes I just can't get into the topic being discussed or I don't have a well thought out opinion, so I'd rather enjoy reading what others think.
I wish there was more content here sometimes, but I'm not allowed to complain until I contribute more myself.

In addition to the 1% rule that Blaze mentioned, there is the concept of tribes. Lemmy/MBin have fostered a tribal culture. Those that don’t follow in line with that culture are more fringe and as a result receive a different ratio of up votes to downvotes. It helps people find their place in our tribe, but it can also be off putting and result in a sort of self-exile.

I’m not saying this limitation is good or bad. I personally find the views here refreshing even if I don’t always agree with them. To me, it’s a comfortable little microcosm of the human experience. But it is just that, a microcosm.

If you want more people to contribute, we either have to evangelize and recruit and/or celebrate a more open culture.

Right now it feels more like the beginnings of Reddit. My concern is if we make a goal to get bigger, we’ll also fall into the trappings of current Reddit.

Is there anywhere or any way you can recommend to get rid of US politics in my feed? Seems like theres a lot of that (I don't mind a little but not every second post)

[–] Gorgritch_umie_killa@aussie.zone 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

What Blaze said, or make sure your on an instance that suits your interests and rely on Local tab as the filter.

Be it Nation (like myself at aussie zone), or special interests (like the instance "vegan theory club"). These instances Local feeds are very different from All Lemmy, and days often go by without any passing referal involving US politics.

It doesn't mean you can't participate in the All tab discussions trending across the Lemmy instances, but it does mean your own Lemmy instance provides a kind of safe harbour, or comfortable place to retreat to when the trending posts get too much.

[–] JustFudgnWork@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago

Thank you for the reply! I will take a look around

[–] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Just block a lot for communities.

And a filters using https://lemmy.world/post/24545370

[–] JustFudgnWork@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago

Wow - this is awesome thank you

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 5 points 22 hours ago

Great points and well said. Lemmy needs small community tools to really be a open platform for everyone

  • unlisting a small community from all
  • only allowing subscribers to vote on small communities
  • posting requirements for small communities (account must be x old, have x votes, have some voting ratio, etc)

We need safe spaces for everyone.

[–] pixelmeow@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago

👋🏻 lurker here

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 5 points 21 hours ago

This isn’t really different from other websites. And it’s more than 40 users, but yeah, it’s a small number.

[–] ramble81@lemm.ee 7 points 23 hours ago

I’ve always wondered how often I post compared to others. Granted no one is near the squid…

[–] Luci@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

Cool! I'm one of 40!!!

[–] modifier@lemmy.ca 3 points 20 hours ago

I'll have you know I've been to some pretty dank places on Lemmy, where 40 active users would be an improbable, and frankly questionable, validation. I've seen things.

[–] socsa@piefed.social 4 points 22 hours ago

Can haz meaningless notoriety?

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 4 points 22 hours ago

Maybe you should try posting more.

[–] Banana@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

I don't really have this issue but I go out of my way to find new communities.

This is why I'm everywhere 😏

[–] littletoolshed@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

Yeah, it’s kinda like that. Thankfully!
