When has privatisation ever led to cheaper prices? We all know it's just so their buddies running these companies can take control of a service that everyone requires

Yeah, they were lying.

They knew it wouldn't do that. They just said so, because that sequence of mouth noises made them more money. It's not "despite" anything. They achieved their goal, and the stated motives were irrelevant.
