It's great. Been using it for years. Even wrote my own bridge that integrates beautifully with their first party ones.

What did you write a bridge for? Like what service did you connect to?

Did you release the code publicly?

[-] cass80@programming.dev 1 points 2 years ago

No. It's a weekend job that implements only the tiny subset of features I care about.

Fair enough

first time I heard of it. why is it that, the knees? looks like a trillian type-of-thing. wants my email. only appimage available. oh it's electron crap. website isn't great, the copy is super-amateur hour. it got acquired by the wordpress lunatic. I mean, OK, but doesn't look very promising.

New desktop isn't electron, and of course it'll need your email, it's a chat app.

But the real cool thing is that it's a matrix client (that federates!) and all the bridges are open source, the company maintains most all of the bridges to corporate chat platforms.

I don't see how them two things are related, my email has nothing to do with my chattings. it also doesn't explain why it's needed as it supposedly acts like a aggregator for the different protocols. upon signing up with a throwaway, it reveals itself as a matrix client and all them chat bridges are hosted by them. I have no idea as to their reputability, credibility, and longevity and at this point this is way too many things I need to get to the bottom of in order to consider it, so I'll check back in a year or two and see how it's holding up.

Beeper sucks. Here's why:

  1. You increase your attack surface and downgrade your security to the level of Matrix, which is not that great and collects pretty much all of the metadata.

  2. These companies do not want you using their services this way. For that reason they are always trying to break the bridges and in my case constantly logging you out of your account and threatening to delete it due to "suspicious activity".

  3. They lie about supporting SMS and RCS, instead opting to Bridge to Google Messenger, another proprietary 3rd party service.
