Started working on this area underneath a tree last spring. Common blue violet, eastern columbine and wild geranium make up the groundcover.
I planted Virginia spiderwort too, but the cottontails feasted on them 🐇
And an update on my violet post from last year. They're filling in this area nicely under the elderberry:
I love it. i'm working on the back yard.. slowly but surely replacing the grass with other things... trying to stay as native as possible.
do you have to contend with deer nibbling on your plant buddies?
I'm in the burbs so not many deer here..
the urb I’m in also rarely has deer about, which is a plus for gardening without fences!

I like that killing your lawn involves imbuing life back into it. I suppose lawns count as undead.
(Seriously though, nice work! Making me wish violets were native here… but I can’t complain because the groundcover in my garden is being overtaken with beautiful white clover)

It's pretty, but can you play in your yard? I'd be afraid of running around and trampling the flowers or stepping in sand spurs
No sand spurs here, thankfully 😄 Both pictures show groundcover under low tree or shrub branches, so no humans step there. These type of plantings are meant to be soft landings for pollinators.
Violets can handle moderate foot traffic and mowing, especially when mixed in with grasses like nimblewill, but not heavy play.
