Again, based on @FixedFun 's original designs so creds to them for the idea.

Thoughts about these ones? For the one on the right, I tried a different angle to hopefully give more bird and less bald man.

Ok. I am someone who feels like kbin doesn't really need a mascot at this point in time. It seems really early and tbh the whole thing feels a little forced. Really not into the bird design either. I just don't get it...

But holy shit this new icon on the right has 100% changed my mind.

It is adorable and I'd put that on the first page of my phone home screen, no questions asked.

Well done.

oh wow i didnt expect that turn around in your comment lmfao. i am so happy you guys like it, i just whipped it up expecting it to fail and was like hmm not so bad, let me send it out into the world and see. its great to see positive reactions :D

[–] hariette@kbin.social 13 points 1 year ago

Ikr? Nice short rollercoaster 😂

And now we have a name for the mascot. It's the Early Bird.

[–] 0rito@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You had me in the first half, not gonna lie.

[–] ripcord@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

But why would you lie

[–] sadreality@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nice plot twist!

This is all open source so let talent do talent and let community decide.

Good "propaganda" is a must tho in digital economy and community sourced and voted product is the way to go IMHO

Lol this is exactly why I held my tongue for the first few of these posts. My first reaction was a pretty strong NO but I thought, let's let this evolve organically and see what happens. Boy was my initial reaction wrong.

Really love this little guy!

It can't be done, but I would be tickled pink if the left image was the default icon and the right image was the icon if I have notifications waiting for me. 🤣

[–] valaramech@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

This is 100% doable, but probably not worth the effort.

I thought mine had a good shot at being a mascot, but yours is amazing and so cute!

[–] rynzcycle@kbin.social 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm getting real, "It looks like you are searching the fediverse, would you like some help?" vibes from this. Love it!

[–] Suedeltica@kbin.social 16 points 1 year ago

I find this guy very relatable tbh

[–] numbscroll@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

This wins. I didn’t realize how much I needed googly eyes on digital art, vs just physical things.

[–] DessertStorms@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

So simple, yet I love it so much. Well done.

[–] capnminus@kbin.social 18 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I must be in the minority here, I think the one on the left looks much cuter.

[–] phi1997@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago
[–] Suedeltica@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

They are both extremely cute and I want both of them, somehow. I want a whole flock of the li'l screaming friends.

I just love it, the Kbird never looked so good, I don't care about credit I just want the Kbird to exist one way or another

[–] FixedFun@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Oh BTW, I almost forgot, yeah right one is best, also more original

[–] Gooper3@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I really like both of these a whole lot, but I have to agree with most others here - the one on the right is wonderful!

[–] ozen@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

I also like the one on the right, it's adorable!

[–] chamim@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The second one improves the original concept so much, I really like it! ☺️

[–] minnieo@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

thank you C:

[–] McBinary@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

The second one (right) is so much better than the previous ones. It loses the 'bald guy' look that the other ones have.

I still maintain that we don't need a mascot, but... that one would be good if we need one.

[–] gerowen@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

I personally like the more roundness look of the first one, the one on the left.

[–] GxC@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I really like the right one. It oozes confidence :)

[–] minnieo@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

thanks! bald man mostly gone I'd hope!

[–] Niello@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

Left is cuter. I also like how the outline curves.

[–] HyperHyperVisor@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Definitely the right one! Exactly what I wanted with the last poll!

[–] minnieo@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

im glad i could fulfill that :D

[–] AnonymousLlama@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

If we thinking birds for the icon, I suggest the glorious Australian bin chicken.

Such a majestic bird, constantly looking for food.

[–] AveragePigeon@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Bin chicken! Finally, a fitting description for my cousin Frank.

[–] Stopkilling0@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Much better, I almost don't even see the balding man anymore :)

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I really don't want a logo that reminds me of that sexist shithead troll of a Reddit supermod.

[–] Teppic@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

From the comment they are talking about AwkwardTheTurtle, but I wouldn't have known what avatar Turtle used, and even having now looked it up it's a bit of a stretch to link this with her avatar.

[–] Kraiden@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Throwing my vote to righty as well.

The left loses a little too much detail at smaller scale.

The little expression marks on righty need to go for the same reason imo.

All in all though, I like it!

[–] DracolaAdil@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I personally like the one on the left. It just resonates with me.

[–] numbscroll@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

@minnieo joining the Left Twix crowd, but they are both really great! I LOVE the gradient outline in these versions compared to the pure black outline in prior.

[–] mihnt@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

My 10 year old daughter says the one on the right.

[–] timmcg@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I really like this update. Having the crest up signifies interest. The old design looks sedated, almost scared, in comparison.

[–] Sundreamers@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Very cute! I like both but I think the one on the right would work best. It's more recognizable when shrunken down, and having the crest feathers up makes it look like it's showing interest.

[–] Chozo@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I'm really digging the bird on the right!

[–] kavides@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

They are both nice but I like the left one - it just speaks to me for some reason. I didn't even mind the bald man of the original design but the extra details eliminates it anyway (for me).
I am also in the camp that I think a mascot would be fun.

Throwing my vote in for the right one too. It's adorable. I mean, the left one is too, but the right one is more adorable.

[–] AdventureSpoon@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

What exactly are the new designs for? Is it for an app? Or to replace the cool purple kbin folder? I really like the cool purple kbin folder most.

[–] tal@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I like the look, but maybe the kbin color, the pink-purple gradient, should be on the bird rather than the background. I think that the pink-purple is probably part of the recognizable kbin "brand". I remember many people making images with Snoo on Reddit -- where his orange eyes were kind of a recognizable characteristic -- and so having the recognizable characteristics on the mascot itself might be helpful, as I would imagine that if people do that with the K-Bird, the pink-purple gradient might get dropped if it isn't part of the mascot itself.

Also, aside from user creations, many articles about Twitter especially and Reddit to a lesser degree use the logo in artwork above the article to symbolize the service, so having an image that is easy to make recognizable derived creations from might help artists at publications.

EDIT: I don't really use Twitter, so I'm not familiar with their branding, but for Twitter, it looks like they use both a blue-on-white and a white-on-blue form, the latter of which requires including some background, to deal with that. E.g.:

https://www.freepik.com/free-vector/clean-set-social-media-logos_2395697.htm#query=twitter%20logo&position=12&from_view=keyword&track=ais

https://www.freepik.com/free-vector/14-twitter-tweet-social-media-icon-pack_36361218.htm#query=twitter%20logo&position=14&from_view=keyword&track=ais

EDIT2: Oh, one other thought. Are the white shapes coming from the K-Bird intended to represent chirping? If so, maybe shift them a bit towards his beak? In anime, it's something of a convention to use sweat drops coming off someone's head to show that they're nervous, and unless the intent is to make the K-Bird look nervous, it might be misinterpreted as that.

Looking at a Google Images search of cartoon chirping birds, they mostly have the visual stuff indicating that they're chirping coming from further down:

https://www.google.com/search?q=cartoon+chirping+bird&tbm=isch

EDIT3: Also, while I realize that the colors are pre-existing elements and you weren't the one who chose them, I also ran it through a colorblindness simulator, and the gradient remains easily-visible for everyone except people with tritanopia, which is pretty rare, so I think that colorblind people should generally be able to get the full effect of the image as well, which is good.
