It looked really good to me as a slight enjoyer of new windows design.

AI forgot that if you dig deep enough into the tiles eventually you’d come across some win95 ui.

MS has been reskinning windows since win98

Yeah because every time they make a change people freak out because it breaks something. There are companies out there still relying on those ancient parts of windows.

Which really makes you wonder why there’s no legacy enterprise edition of windows and a consumer version.

Legacy enterprise is basically just outdated versions of Windows and Windows Server. I believe you could pay Microsoft for extended updates for a bit. If you now have mission critical software on ancient hardware/software, that's on you. If it's that critical you should maintain it.

There is a launcher I have been using for years that replicates the windows phone uix. It’s called metro launcher. Highly recommended. I used to have a Nokia lumia and loved it.

Man, sounded interesting, I was going to try it out but it looks like it won't work/download for Android 12. At least, according to the play store

Check out Square Home on Play Store. It is the like the windows phone UI but will actually work on Android 13

That's really neat. Thanks for mentioning it.

[–] bradons@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks. Checking it out

I legitimately miss my WP7 device -- and this from an avid Linux user.

There was really something to be said for the simplicity of the UI on a mobile device. The app support was never there, but what did exist was very smooth and I always felt it a pleasure to use.

My favorite phone of all time was the Lumia 1020. The only bad part about Windows phones, like you said, was the lack of apps.

I remember the launcher and it's still something that i deeply miss today.

What's dumb is that Microsoft makes an android launcher and it isn't just a Windows phone skin for android.

I miss it too. The UX was really well done.

I always thought that the Windows tile system was a good UI for phones. Every time that I needed a new phone I checked out Windows phones but they were never ready.

The Android system that they proposed could have helped with the problem of not having the apps but it came too late.

I had a couple devices that ran windows (Nokia and a samsung) and they were great phones. I miss the designs for sure, but it did get pretty old pretty fast.

[–] UristMcHolland@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

It's really a shame Windows phones didn't try harder to get developers to port their apps. That was the only real downer about owning a Windows phone in my experience.

I never knew Dall-E spoke Quornish.

(It's a made up language name, don't look it up)
