Apologies if I missed one that has already been held. But I saw a member census of beehaw, which was really interesting. I'm not suggesting gathering of any personally identifying info, but more generally getting a sense of who is here on kbin.

Magic skeleton covered in meat and powered by lightening. The connection between the world inside my skull and other's worlds is very hindered by my inadequate usage of my meat-flaps. If I could get my meat flaps to work better perhaps I could share my inside world more accurately

Shine bright my friend

[–] Ni@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Magic skeleton is great, reminds me of:

You’re a ghost driving a meat-coated skeleton made from stardust; what do you have to be scared of?

[–] elscallr@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I am a meat popsicle

[–] Cloudless@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I'm a human being residing on planet Earth, and I'm composing this message in the English language.

What interesting things did you find from beehaw census?

[–] Ni@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think they had gender split, country etc. It'd be nice to know if kbin mirrors more of the reddit general membership or if it differs

[–] Cloudless@kbin.social 10 points 1 year ago (5 children)

I think people's interests/hobbies are much more interesting than there gender/country etc. Like:

  • Are you a dog person or cat person?
  • Do you think video games are too violent?
  • Do you believe in alternative medicine?
  • Toilet seat up or down?
  • Do you like beans?
[–] dandan@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I agree. Let's avoid the standard identity politics categories like gender, sexual orientation, race, blah, blah...

Can I add to your list:

  • TP fold vs. scrunch.
  • Both socks first, or one sock one shoe at a time.
  • Shirt buttoned from the top or bottom.
  • Innie or outie.
[–] Ni@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I'm both intrigued and horrified by most of those!

Shirt buttoned from the bottom??

[–] Ni@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I might have seen enough bean content for one lifetime.

I like the idea of hobbies and interests being a part. Might help see if we have strong potential 'niche' communities

[–] Ragnell@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

A separate magazine for this really might be the way to go. A place for users to introduce themselves and answer various surveys. Or, like I offered below, I could open up /m/namethefediverse to shudder activity that isn't me.

[–] Ni@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Might be nice to have a place to introduce and say hi, not sure if I've seen a magazine for that purpose yet?

[–] Ragnell@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I'd be willing to create one if I could get one or two more people in on modding it. I have zero moderation experience and I tend to burn out on long term projects. With some help I could probably keep at it, though.

  • Is your homepage /sub or /all?
  • Is this your first Fediverse site?
  • What theme do you use?
  • Do you prefer app, desktop or mobile site?
  • What deadly sin do you think should get a pass?
[–] theinspectorst@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Understanding the demographics is quite important context for the interest and hobbies.

For example, in real life I don't think I've ever heard anyone express the opinion that it's acceptable for the general public to own and carry firearms in their day-to-day life, yet you'd see this view upvoted shockingly often on Reddit. Understanding that Reddit has a heavy American skew is important context for the views that get expressed there.

If you asked kbinauts what their favourite foods were and found out that they include kielbasa and kotlet schabowy, it might be helpful to contextualise that with a sense of what proportion of kbinauts are Polish.

[–] Cloudless@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The problem is people getting stereotyped based on their nationality etc. There are people in America who support gun rights, while many others support gun control.

People should be grouped based on their beliefs, not which country they are from.

[–] theinspectorst@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Knowing their demographics doesn't stereotype them - that's a weird leap to make.

Knowing that Americans are overepresented on Reddit doesn't mean you have to assume that all Americans like guns, but statistically that is a population that skews more pro-gun than the average person and so that helps me understand why Reddit also skews more pro-gun.

[–] Ni@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I'd just personally like to know if there are more Europeans or people from the UK on here. Reddit did skew very American which is absolutely fine, but I'm wondering if a similar demographic migrated here or if certain groups left?

[–] Pandoras_Can_Opener@mander.xyz 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like this one but this non binary person thinks some representation of gender might be nice. Maybe.

[–] Ni@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I couldn't agree more! I already find this place more welcoming than reddit and it got my curious as to why

[–] CaptainPatent@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Oh my god, are you me?!?

[–] noughtnaut@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Am definitely human.

One of the benefits of having an online persona is not being put in a box (of any description).

Cis-male, heterosexual, sexually defiant meat-popsicle on drugs and playing video games, checking in.

Edit: Meant deviant, not defiant. I mean i guess either works, but the intent was more of a "Eh $20 is $20" deal.

[–] Ni@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Hah nice to meet you! I was thinking more of an anonymised questionnaire, not sure how or who would do it. Also not sure how beehaw held theirs?

[–] LoafyLemon@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

That's a long-ass name.

[–] 0xtero@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Damn, dude captured 50% of the server demographic right there with one sentence.
If you'd also said you had posted this using GNU/Linux, it would have been 100%

[–] Ragnell@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

41-year-old cisgender female pagan who is still working on her introduction for Mastodon since last fall and so isn't well, great at answering census still.

[–] Ni@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Nice to meet you! Not sure if you were part of witches vs patriarchy on reddit but I miss that subreddit.
Never used mastodon, starting to think I should make an account as I've abandoned dmy twitter

[–] Lunyan@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I loved witches vs patriarchy! Would be cool to have a similar place here maybe

I lurked a bit on witches vs patriarchy from time to time, but I was always more into frivolous things on Reddit. I'm keeping my eye open for witchcraft and feminism boards here to lurk on, though. I'm on witches.live on Mastodon.

Canadian. Mostly here for politics, news and sports.

[–] CMLVI@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hey, it's me, your southern cousin. Here for news, politics, and sports. Also video games but that may be implied on an internet forum...

[–] Ni@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nice to meet you both. News, politics, games and the climate crisis, unfortunately don't share a love of sport!

[–] CMLVI@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Throw in climate stuff for me too. I don't get too into it, because it's easy to doom spiral about the worthlessness of individual effort in the face of corporate giants, but still a very clear issue.

Maybe fusion does eventually take off? Lol

[–] Ni@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

From my perspective personal responsibility matters regardless of what other people/companies/countries are doing. It may be a small effort, but you will show other people that making change is possible.

But yes, I'm there in the doom spiral!

[–] CMLVI@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Lmao the spiral consumes us all at one point or another.

[–] Hank@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I'm a hot milf in your area.

An imaginary fox that doesn't exist. This comment doesn't exist either.

[–] palordrolap@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Over on Mastodon, the custom is the "(hash)introduction" hashtag for things like this.

Not sure what that custom ought to be on Kbin, Lemmy and similar, since everything has to be assigned to a magazine.

Maybe a (hash)introduction microblog post on /m/random?

Or someone could set up a magazine specifically for introductions, because magazines are kind of like the "main" hashtag that a piece of content would be associated with, but that seems like overkill.

... Anyway I just did a search (here) on kbin.social and it seems like there are already a few uses of that hashtag in various magazines, presumably where people feel most comfortable or where their account is going to be used. I can imagine some people might have different accounts for different magazines. Whatever works for them, I guess.

If you want your census, that might be a place to start. As for participating, I'll probably do the hashtag on /m/random at some point. Eventually. When I'm ready.

[–] Ragnell@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I guess I could adjust the rules on /m/namethefediverse? Or we could just make an /m/rollcall magazine.

[–] Funkmaster-Hex@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I'm ugly and I'm proud!

[–] JelloBrains@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I think people's interests/hobbies are much more interesting than there gender/country etc. Like:

I'm American, I like Aquariums, "Pro" Wrestling, NASCAR, veggie gardening, Jesus, and a plethora of other things. On politics, I skew center and I know a lot of people on these platforms hate that, but as Popeye says, I yam what I yam.

Are you a dog person or cat person?
Do you think video games are too violent?
Do you believe in alternative medicine?
Toilet seat up or down?
Do you like beans?

Dog
No, parents should just learn how to be damn parents and monitor what their kids do.
Not really, I'll try it but I don't think it works very well.
Toilet seat all the way down, seat and lid.
Depends on the beans, I mean there are a hundred or more types.

For example, in real life I don't think I've ever heard anyone express the opinion that it's acceptable for the general public to own and carry firearms in their day-to-day life

This post was right, it's an American thing, and sure not all Americans, but for some of us to get a license to carry we have to have a photo taken, our fingerprints taken, and pay a fee every year.

TP fold vs. scrunch.
Both socks first, or one sock one shoe at a time.
Shirt buttoned from the top or bottom.
Innie or outie.

Fold, you scrunchers are using too much paper and that's environmentally bad. Get a bidet everyone.
Socks first, then shoes.
You should button it from the top.
Innie

Is your homepage /sub or /all?
Is this your first Fediverse site?
What theme do you use?
Do you prefer app, desktop or mobile site?
What deadly sin do you think should get a pass?

I tried all, but it was full of the same thing from a dozen different instances, so I switched to sub.
No, I tried Diaspora for a while, and if I remember that was some form of fediverse.
I'm rocking Toykyo theme right now, but usually dark.
Desktop. Desktop is the superior experience for most things, you can't change my mind.

I am the very model of a modern Major-General. I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral. I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical, from Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical.

Hey! I'm a 23 year old trans woman. Mostly here for talking about videogames, game dev, music and being queer. :)

[–] Ragnell@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

There's an /m/GirlGamer group here. A bit quiet right now, but I post in it at times.

[–] Lunyan@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Oh cool I didn't know! That was always such a nice community on reddit ^^
