A general gaming community for Piefed.

More games, less memes, no outrage culture.

Rules

  1. Stay civil.
Debate ideas, not people. No personal attacks, no flame wars. More info here.

  2. This is not a gamer identity space.
We don’t self-identify as “gamers.” Games are art, not a lifestyle brand. If your whole identity is about consumption, you’ll probably feel out of place here.

  3. Talk about games as art.
Discussion should focus on design, ideas, and creative choices. What does this game say? What are the consequences of its mechanics? What does its aesthetic communicate?

  4. No discrimination.
Prejudice, bigotry, or harassment of any kind will get you removed.

  5. No spam.
Keep discussion meaningful. Don’t flood with promos or off-topic noise.

  6. Stay on topic.
This space is for discussion of games as creative works, not for tech support, low-effort memes, or console wars.

  7. Evolving rules.
These rules may change as the community grows and we refine what works.

Calling all otaku—VARLET is here.

And this isn’t just another JRPG. It’s a full-on school-life, dungeon-crawling identity crisis simulator, cooked up by FuRyu’s Team Noir (aka the folks behind Monark) and AQURIA (who did The Caligula Effect). That pedigree alone should make your ears perk up. Oh, and the soundtrack? That’s by none other than Tsukasa Masuko, the original Megami Tensei composer. Yes, the vibes are strong with this one.

The Steam store blurb basically reads like poetry, so let’s let it speak for itself:

Kousei Academy: where the protagonist has recently transferred.

Whispered rumors surround this place.

Another world where strange creatures dwell appears within the school...

...and once you've wandered in, there's no way back out.

After seeing this other world—a Glitch—with his own eyes, the protagonist realizes several people have been replaced with monsters.

You must fight alongside your friends to save the academy from imminent destruction.

Yes, it’s Persona-coded—but not a Persona clone. VARLET’s combat uses a Timeline system where you can cut in, cancel enemy actions, and line up a Blitz Mode beatdown. The main gimmick? You switch between Leader mode (party buffs, responsible adult energy) and Ruler mode (self-harm but giga damage, basically emo DPS).

And the wildest part: your Triad Stats. Every decision you make shifts you along Light (morality, sympathy, altruism) or Dark (Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism). Your personality literally becomes your build. Role-play your inner saint, or min-max your inner sociopath.

Outside the fights? Full-on anime life sim. Requests for the school guild, karaoke nights, arcade hangs, hushed conversations with your besties. Get too cozy with multiple people, though, and you’re cruising for drama. (Because even in JRPGs, love triangles are OP.)

The production values are off the charts. The trailer is six minutes long because the devs couldn’t shut up about how pretty their game is. It looks better than most anime airing this season. And yes, you can plug in your Xbox controller and it Just Works™.

DLC? Nothing scummy. A digital artbook, a 53-track album, and some Monark/Caligula cosplay uniforms. That’s it. No “$4.99 EXP boosters” nonsense.

Now for the hot take: C$70.19 at launch. That’s a premium price for what looks like Persona’s strange cousin who spent too much time on 4chan. But honestly? Between the SMT pedigree, the personality-as-stat system, and the sheer anime of it all—VARLET is probably the weird, broken gem otaku JRPG fans like me live for.
