If only there was some sort of movement of gracious people willing to donate their expertise and time to write software and allow the users to fully control it by giving away the source code. That'd fix everything!

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 71 points 1 year ago

But... but... then you'd have to think about what you're doing and *gasp* develop a basic understanding of the technology that runs your life! Who has time for that nerd shit?

[-] thatonecoder@lemmy.ca 44 points 1 year ago

To be fair, some people are burnt out to degrees most of humanity struggles to comprehend. Of course, there are always the lazy butts; HOWEVER, you cannot generalize at all.

[-] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 25 points 1 year ago

Nah man, those stupid ass single parents working multiple jobs need to get their priorities straight! /s

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

So basically, if you're sawing trees with a blunt saw and somebody suggests sharpening the saw, you'll say "I can't, I got trees to cut!"?

[-] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 year ago

Almost.

Imagine youre cutting trees with an axe and someone tells you theres a tool out there that can do it better, but you have to learn how to use it to become efficient with it. And you dont have time to learn new tool because capitalism says you have to have that tree cut down right now.

If only my work would listen to you

(We make Windows-only software so a transition to Linux any time soon ain’t happening)

[-] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 8 points 1 year ago

You have my sincere condolences, buddy.

Never heard of OpenWRT before, is it nice?

[-] negativenull@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

Linux based embedded router OS. Yes, it's nice.

[-] Hond@piefed.social 46 points 1 year ago

You can install linux via bullets now? how cool is that?

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world 33 points 1 year ago

it just works

[-] teft@piefed.social 27 points 1 year ago

Not bullets. That’s a windows thing. Linux uses USB arrows.

[-] wabasso@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 year ago

Oh geez that’s really what that is. What’s this from?

[-] teft@piefed.social 14 points 1 year ago

Hawkeye the tv series.

[-] Gloria@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 year ago
  • install linux

did it work?

[-] LoafedBurrito@lemmy.world 34 points 1 year ago

Yeah, it's time for windows to die. My windows 10 computer i'm pretty sure everything on it would work on linux, so i'll switch it over to Mint in a few weeks.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world 17 points 1 year ago

I installed Pop OS on some old hardware "just to see what it's like" 2 weeks ago and am already planning to switch my primary over by this weekend. If I can be done with Windows, I'll be a happy man.

My method has always been the same, it it always works eventually.

When my devices go against my will, I lean real close and whisper "I'm gonna fucking disconnect you and then throw you in a river" and usually after a few hours of threats I get what I want. I guess the debugging and manual reading and whatnot does help a bit, but I suspect it is mostly the fear that fixes the issues.

[-] ignotum@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago

Oh so you're the one behind all the electronics waste in my local river?

Please throw it in the bin or install linux on it from now on

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 31 points 1 year ago

As soon as Windows is installed, Microsoft owns the computer.

[-] Retro_unlimited@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

It want from “My Computer” to “This PC”.

[-] tourist@lemmy.world 22 points 1 year ago

they've got all the telemetry to infer what you're doing and what your screen looks like

But for some reason, they still need to screenshot dudes fucking up excel spreadsheets and lowballing people on Facebook marketplace for 8 hours

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 year ago

Don’t forget about the porn. Then they can blackmail politicians to pass laws that force more people to use their shit.

[-] Karyoplasma@discuss.tchncs.de 19 points 1 year ago

As a millenial, I never understood this. Back when we were having LAN parties, we always shared our porn, so I know what pretty much everyone I care about tosses their salad to and they do know what I get off on as well. I'm impervious to that sort of blackmail, it's like a superpower.

[-] teft@piefed.social 21 points 1 year ago

This is why religious people hate the love who you want movement. Sexual shame or guilt is an extremely strong way to control someone. If you aren’t ashamed of who you are then blackmail like this doesn’t work.

What do computers and air conditioning have in common? Both stop working when you open windows.

[-] ExtremeUnicorn@feddit.org 12 points 1 year ago

Does any body have a link to that photo?

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world 31 points 1 year ago
[-] cute_noker@feddit.dk 9 points 1 year ago

Is that how Americans make screenshot?

[-] Steamymoomilk@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Wheres this photo even from?? I would love to know, its peak shitlisting material

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world 21 points 1 year ago

There's a really small credit at the bottom from 1998, and I found some more from the same photoshoot just now. It looks like people have tried to find the source of this before, but I'm not seeing any answer as to WHY, lol

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 8 points 1 year ago

Stock imagery, probably.

[-] ExtremeUnicorn@feddit.org 6 points 1 year ago

Amazing. Thanks.

[-] Sunshine@piefed.ca 11 points 1 year ago

Watch Redditors defend the Microsoft corpo…

[-] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 10 points 1 year ago

I wonder if I can get them to delete of the shit they took from my fucking comp already? I moved to Linux mint a short while ago and despite some minor limitations, I haven't looked back since.

[-] geoff@midwest.social 10 points 1 year ago

DO NOT fire at those vintage Macs. They are not responsible for this.

[-] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Oh no, this picture is from 1998, those Macs were new. That woman was rocking the Agent Scully look for a reason.

[-] ExtremeUnicorn@feddit.org 6 points 1 year ago

Maybe they are, in a way.

[-] heavyboots@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago

It is somewhat ironic they're showing a Mac in that shot… did Office even run on them at that stage of the game.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I was hoping nobody would notice they were macs when I made this because the image was too funny not to use...

[-] BurgerBaron@piefed.social 6 points 1 year ago

I'm forced to use Web Outlook at work now. Can't save shit locally, no, it HAS to go through OneDrive. Fucking hell.

[-] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Microsoft runs the best viral marketing for Linux.
