I'd honestly feel better to hear someone calling us dog eating chingchong than this tankie shit. At least they're open about being racist and there's some truth to it.

Tankie/Campist attitudes towards South Korea are truly disgusting. As if in an ideal world they'd all simply have been content to be the permanent playthings of the Kim dynasty - if not for that meddling America.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

Who wouldn't want to live in the workers' paradise of North Korea? The evil Americans have deprived the poor South Koreans of this great privilege!

lmao the phenomenon where women put on makeup that makes their face look white predates any American involvement in Korea by ages. Also, the same is true for China, does it then mean that Chinese women look up to America? truly impeccable logic

[-] bobby@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 year ago

Also, the same is true for China

It's not even a uniquely Asian thing. Sun tanned skin meant that the people had to work in the field while light skin meant higher status. If anything, tanning as a beauty trend is the relatively recent development.

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 2 points 1 year ago

That's because we are indian exclaves /s

[-] KatakiY@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

The history of white skin in Korea is still kind weird though right? I think it's American exceptionalism to pretend it's all America's doing but capitalism has definitely taken up the white skin cause in a big way in South Korea lol

https://pulitzercenter.org/stories/popularity-skin-whitening-sparks-debate-south-korea

The industry is wild

you're right, capitalism has definitely contributed to its rise in popularity. nevertheless, this phenomenon is ancient, and not limited to Korea

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skin_whitening#East_Asia

[-] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 4 points 1 year ago

The history of white skin in Korea is still kind weird though right?

Not as weird as other cultures where lighter skin is preferable. I wouldn't even blame is as a capitalism thing as a lot of cultures have skin whitening/bleaching for centuries.

[-] Anivia@feddit.org 1 points 1 year ago

And Americans love to tan, so how would white makeup mean they are copying Americans

[-] SomeAmateur@sh.itjust.works 27 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It's amazing how tankies think everyone else is so incredibly stupid and gullible

...but not them

[-] sunoc@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago

Nuh nuh, you see unlike us sheeples, THEY are true freethinkers, totally independent from influence of wealthy oligarchs!

[-] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago

I’m usually on this community’s side, but SK was literally created to be a capitalist utopia to fight against communism when the initial goal of defeating communism (NK and china) was no longer an option. If tankie triad users managed to avoid pejoratives and aggrandizing North fucking Korea for 5 seconds, they might have been able to make a point that others could physically tolerate listening to.

[-] Skavau@piefed.social 29 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

North Koreas emergence was much the same, except as just a bulwark against capitalism/the west. South Koreas institutions and policy can absolutely be criticised, but it is full of real people now who have their own lives. The notion that its devoid of modern culture and media, just a US surrogate is quite a repulsive one.

Same with Taiwan.

[-] Eldritch@piefed.world 12 points 1 year ago

Capitalism and Leninism are equally bad. There's no argument the ML can make that south Korea would have been better under the rule of the north. Objectively, despite the problems south Korea has. And there are many. They've done much better for their people. You can whine that the west has kept the North down with embargoes and sanctions. But you only have to look to china. For all their flaws to find a group that despite brutalizing and oppressing their people has done much better for them. Simply because the north is held thrall to a nepo state of cultish personality.

[-] KatakiY@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I think Korea would have been better off deciding its own future.

There was a moment in history where a communist North Korea could have really succeeded but due to both internal and external factors it obviously didn't.

I do think that those of us in the West sometimes downplay how much damage the Korea war did though.

Something like 70-80% of their cities were flattened. It's hard to recover from that while the us is constantly interfering. This is not a defense of the regime but just kinda sad what has happened to the North Korean people. It's miserable.

South Korea and it's oligarchy fucking sucks too. It just looks prettier and has more food.

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 7 points 1 year ago

There was a moment in history where a communist North Korea could have really succeeded but due to both internal and external factors it obviously didn't.

Would that be before or after Kim Il Sung decided to be a totalitarian despot?

[-] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 year ago

Depends on when you put the demarcation point for that, but the North had a higher quality of life than the South for quite some time. South Korea was under its own dictator for much of the post-war period. Its economy didn't really get going until the 1980s. It was mostly agrarian until then.

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 4 points 1 year ago

The only time when the North had better quality of life than the South was when they were being massively subsidized by the USSR. When the Soviet economy collapsed and the foreign income stopped, North Korea collapsed too. It was never a functional economy on its own merits.

[-] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 year ago

The only reason western Europe shaped up so well in the post-war era was because the United States massively subsidized it. So what?

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 1 points 1 year ago

After the US aid ended, western Europe stood on its own. North Korea has only ever been a puppet state, first of the USSR and then the PRC.

[-] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 year ago

No, it didn't. It had access to international trade.

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 1 points 11 months ago

Right, because they weren't wacko authoritarian isolationists. Choosing to participate in international relationships is a thing that mature, stable governments do.

Attacking your neighbors for self-enrichment is a thing that tyrannical dictators do. Attacking your own people to increase your political power is a thing that nutjob authoritarians do.

[-] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Pretty much. I did start out by calling SK a capitalist utopia. The western Germany strategy is pretty good.

[-] Droggelbecher@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I mean for sure, but saying a country that has been colonised before is still literally part of the colonising nation kind of denies it and its people their agency. That's the problematic bit. But yeah, if they tried to be respectful for a second, the influence the US has had on SK would still be an interesting topic to discuss.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The ironic part is that China colonized the Korean first people on a bunch of separate occasions over the centuries. Some of the most racist things I have ever heard anyone say was Chinese people talking about how all Korean Culture is just dumbed down Chinese culture. Literally super racist "look how cute the savages are trying to imitate us" shit that would get you a massive fucking side eye anywhere in the western world, except it's an extremely mainstream trope in China.

If the Korean peninsula is a colonial state, then it is North Korea which has the older imperialist influence.

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 year ago

The only similarity between this two country as of now is capitalism-run state, the whole culture is entirely different. Kinda silly to agree with tankie just because of the history.

[-] TheBat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Is it really? From what I know it is xenophobic, ultracapitalist nation obsessed with purity and celebrity worship. Sounds like where America is headed.

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago

xenophobic, ultracapitalist nation obsessed with purity and celebrity worship

Sounds like china.

SK imprisoned their president Yoon for attempting a coup. 🇰🇷≠🇺🇸

[-] goat@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

Knowing tankie ideology, I wonder if they're supportive of his coup

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago

I wouldn't be surprised

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 year ago

Sorry if this is ignorant but is anyone willing to explain to me what makes this racist?

[-] goat@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Saying that a part of asian culture (which has existed long before the US) is to create the appearance of being caucasian is racist.

and also the whole erasure of South Korea as an identity and culture

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 year ago

Was the initial comment about that? There’s no context so I don’t even know what’s being discussed.

[-] goat@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago

It's a common tankie talking point where they believe South Korea (and any country friendly with the US) is a US puppet, hence them saying "American enclave"

So when they think of South Korea as a country, they often think of it as just the US. This is racist because it erases a country's identity.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 year ago

OK, this makes sense. I’ve noticed this a lot with Ukraine where the interests of Ukrainian people are just completely ignored as if they’re completely irrelevant. A dangerous side effect of campism.

[-] goat@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Tankies need campism as a method of survival. their ideology cannot exist without it

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago

I've heard non tankies say this too

[-] RunawayFixer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

It's negative generalizations about everyone from a specific country/ethnicity.

I found a good reply on old.reddit that goes into the slippery slope of generalization > stereotype > prejudice > overt racism: https://old.reddit.com/r/AskSocialScience/comments/nqoas/what_is_the_difference_between_generalizations/

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Oh so generalizing that all South Koreans are ignorant/materialistic, is that what was meant?

I can definitely see how that could be racist although I also see people making statements like this all the time and they’re rarely called out. But maybe they should be.

I guess I’m still confused because the quoted text isn’t really a generalization. It’s not totally clear to me what is being said there but I’m not picking up the racist undertones in that section. But maybe OP was responding to the whole comment as you suggested.

[-] RunawayFixer@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

There's a lot of stupid generalizations there: SK is an american enclave, "their" lives evolve around ... And the other nutter who was saying that "their wives" put on make up to look white. It's stupid generalizations and profound prejudice, but it's not overt racism (I think). On that slippery slope scale I posted earlier of: generalization > stereotype > prejudice > overt racism, they are at the stage of prejudice. So it's not overt racism, but it shows a racist mindset (Imo).

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago

How exactly is this tankie?

[-] goat@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Tankies believe South Korea is a US puppet and that south korea abandoned asian culture

[-] PhilipTheBucket@quokk.au 2 points 1 year ago

Not only that, I've seen a few different times them claiming that "occupied Korea" is a warning about what might happen to countries that trust the Western system and align with it too much. Meanwhile, life for people in North Korea isn't all that bad, that's just propaganda.

This is why it's hard to get a foothold talking with a lot of with them. They literally have effectively no connection to reality. You just can't make an internet argument with someone who has no obligation to anything real.

[-] goat@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

all extremists function like that unfortunately, you just can't use facts against them since they don't believe in them.

tho in the case of tankies, I'm not entirely sure if they actually believe in the NK conspiracy nonsense, but instead it's more of a sunk-cost fallacy for them.

[-] PhilipTheBucket@quokk.au 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah. The whole model is not a factual conversation. The whole model is a "fight." If you say something factual that makes sense, that's a huge problem, and they have to double down on fighting back twice as hard. To say "Oh that's actually a really good point and the evidence backs it up, let me adjust my world view accordingly" would be a cowardly failure.

[-] goat@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

so how does one even manage to have an honest conversation or dialogue with them?

[-] PhilipTheBucket@quokk.au 1 points 1 year ago

Do you mind if I change the topic? I want to ask you about the dbzer0 vs MoG drama.

What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether it be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users, as it handwaves their extremism.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post, rather than engaging in arguments that lack mutual agreement.

Brigading/Trolling — If you're here because this community was linked in another thread, please refrain from maliciously voting, commenting, or manipulating the post in any way. This includes alt accounts. All votes are public, and if you are found to be brigading, you will be banned. Good-faith and honest communication is an exception.

Tankies can explain their views, but may be criticised or challenged for them. Any minor infraction of the rules may result in a warning and possibly a temporary ban.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically last only 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction doubles the duration. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.
