I see that Lemmy is creating a new link to images hosted outside of this instance. Are they stored on the server even if I post an outside link ? (Asking as a way to find best practice regarding server load with pix)

IMO Imgur is best for posting images because it won't increase the server cost of a lemmy instance.

That's what I'm thinking too. But when I click on the "expand here" button on a post, I see the image is loaded from a lemmy.ca link, so I was wondering if images are stored on here anyways, resized or compressed probably ? In which case it doesn't really help to host small pix outside, only if original image size is huge...

Also, imgur is blocking Tor uploads, if you like a little bit of added privacy. So I'm going for imgbb. Any other pix hosting that's better for direct linking ?

Yes you are right. If the server is caching the images anyways then it doesn't make sense to upload it to third party services.

Thanks for mentioning imgbb. I was tired of ads and trackers on imgur and been finding a good alternative of imgur.

i'm not 100% sure what you mean, but I think if you post a URL to an image hosted outside, it will create a thumbnail of it which is stored locally to the instance. i don't believe it will store the full sized image?

I was trying to figure out if the thumbnail created is smaller/lighter than the images I post, because I already use to make them small in Gimp before posting. So if that doesn't really change, I might as well upload pix directly on Lemmy.ca, it's easier to display in my post in one click. But I'm more concerned about people uploading big pix here, which I prefer not to recommend in the community I created. So I think I will add something saying "reduce the size of your pix, or host them outside". Thanks for the reply.
