Correction: 17th war crime

[-] oyo@lemmy.zip 63 points 11 months ago

War crime kinda buys into the lie that these are wartime actions. These are crimes against humanity and straight up state-directed murder.

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 11 points 11 months ago

It doesn't have to be an official war to be a war crime. Vietnam was never a declared war but My Lai was obviously a war crime.

At least 347 and up to 504 civilians, almost all women, children, and elderly men, were murdered by U.S. Army soldiers

Some of the women were gang-raped and their bodies mutilated, and some soldiers mutilated and raped children as young as 12. The incident was the largest massacre of civilians by U.S. forces in the 20th century.

The killing began while the troops were searching the village for guerillas, and continued after they realized that no guerillas seemed to be present. Villagers were gathered together, held in the open, then murdered with automatic weapons, bayonets, and hand grenades; one large group of villagers was shot in an irrigation ditch. Soldiers also burned down homes and killed livestock.

The massacre was originally reported as a battle against Viet Cong troops, and was covered up in initial investigations by the U.S. Army.

Twenty-six soldiers were charged with criminal offenses, but only Lieutenant William Calley Jr., the leader of 1st Platoon in C Company, was convicted. He was found guilty of murdering 22 villagers and originally given a life sentence, but served three-and-a-half years under house arrest after his sentence was commuted.

Oh my fucking god.

The leniency of people who do such acts is why we have the world we have now. From the Revolutionary War to The Civil War to the World Wars, going soft on evil results in others finding new and horrific ways to commit evil, knowing they will face little to no consequences.

It is why I advocate for putting ICE on trial as a class, then executing anyone paid for serving as ICE in some capacity. It isn't great that we can't put everyone through a full trial, but only 210ish nazis were executed at Nuremberg. Society will need ICE thoroughly removed, else they will continue the Confederacy's work for centuries to come.

[-] IronBird@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

the country that couldn't even hold Nixon accountable, let alone their current pedophile in chief, is never going to hold ICE accountable.

Oh - I bet you can come up with more than that if you expand beyond drug boats.

[-] gdog05@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

Yeah, I was thinking that as I was typing. I suppose "At Least 17 Fake Drug Boat War Crimes" would be accurate

[-] BestBouclettes@jlai.lu 9 points 11 months ago

Hmm. I wonder why the USA is not part of the ICJ!

[-] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 56 points 11 months ago

This was a fishing boat. There is no evidence offered that it is anything more. The Liar Hegseth is rando-killing fishermen.

The rest of the article goes on to say Columbian and French authorities seized `7+ tons of cocaine without fatalities' in the Atlantic.

"Separately, six individuals were arrested and more than seven tons of cocaine were seized in the Atlantic Ocean "without fatalities," Colombia President Gustavo Petro said in a post on X Friday morning.

Petro called it "one of the largest seizure days in my government, with the collaboration of our public security forces and the French authorities."

The seizures were carried out on land and at sea, according to Petro. The nationalities of those arrested are unknown, Petro said."

[-] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 35 points 11 months ago

"US murders more fishermen"

[-] kbal@fedia.io 34 points 11 months ago

So ... the US navy are basically pirates now?

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 16 points 11 months ago

No, because they're not stealing anything, they're just murdering.

Oh, cool, an excuse to trot out two of my favorite videos:

How to Be a Pirate Captain

How to be a Pirate Quartermaster

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 11 months ago

Just this, and that all involved, from the military service members that fired the shots, to the captains, generals, senators and the president himself should all be persecuted by the ICC

[-] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 19 points 11 months ago

They need to normalize murdering foreign people far away for when they start to do it in the US.

[-] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 11 points 11 months ago

Are you kidding? The US can't normalize it any more. They've been killing for money and power way before Smedley Butler called it a racket.

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 17 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

In the continuing serial murder conspiracy, one-time hate-mongering TV famewhore and national security leak Peter Hegseth ordered the 17th unprovoked, racially-motivated high-explosive rocket attack on yet another random group of peaceful citizens in their pleasure boat in waters within the sovereignty of an ally nation. No charges have been filed against Hegseth, and no trade embargoes have been announced against the warlord's home territory, the former United States of America.

Fixed the lede for ya.

[-] Aedis@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

OK, for real though, why is this happening? Is it all around Venezuela? Or is it just random boats around central America?

If it's just Venezuela, then surely these people that are "fishing" know there's a big ass warship shooting them out of the water if they stray too far from the coast. (I say it in quotes because it just doesn't add up to me.)

None of this makes sense to me.

If they are carrying drugs, surely there's leftover debris that can prove it, that can be retrieved after the fact.

Also yeah, whatever the reason, this is not the way to carry out an operation like this. Immobilize the vehicle, stop them and take them to interpol or whatever maritime authority there is on international waters.

[-] unconsequential@slrpnk.net 21 points 11 months ago

Your last paragraph is the key one here. They could detain, stop and seize and/or turn them back but they are actively choosing to murder them instead. No trial and no evidence beyond “I say so”. This is state sanctioned terrorism. It’s about the fear, the chaos and the domination. It’s not about protecting anyone or preventing anything. The pain and fear is the purpose.

[-] Aedis@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Right, but the people going out must know the risk they are taking at this point right? What is so important that they're risking their lives with this? None of it adds up for me.

Edit: going out and taking that risk screams doing it under duress. But then there would be evidence right?

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 10 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

There are hundreds or thousands of boats every day, and so far only 17 strikes. They're willing to play those odds so that they can feed themselves and their families.

[-] Aedis@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

I guess I assumed they were the only ones going out that far and taking the risk. But its more likely just the ones that looked more "suspicious" to them with no real positive identification that they are doing anything wrong.

[-] unconsequential@slrpnk.net 9 points 11 months ago

Do you just stop going to work because of workplace shooting? Do you just stop sending your kids to school because of school shootings? Do you stop going to church or the grocery store because some maniac might light it up? Do you stop dating as a woman because you’re most likely to be murdered by the man you’re dating or married to?

But the short answer… poverty! If they’re fishing it’s for work and if they’re running drugs it’s also for work. They’re doing their jobs bc their kids don’t eat if they don’t. Just because someone drives a boat with cargo you don’t agree with doesn’t make them a demon. That’s _if _ these people are doing that which the US government is giving zero legitimate proof of. But even if they are drug runners, it’s work and good paying work, and probably even a bigger payoff now that the US is on a murderous rampage. If you survive the payoff may just be worth it. They’re people. People with families and with needs.

[-] Aedis@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago

My possibly incorrect assumption is that those boats that got hit were the only ones going that far away. If there are more and these are the only ones randomly getting hit then yeah that's just terrorism.

[-] unconsequential@slrpnk.net 0 points 11 months ago

So Venezuelans don’t have the right to go across an invisible line in their own sea because the United States will murder them? US boats of all kinds frequently leave US waters. Should every other country just start calling us terrorists and blow us up?

[-] Aedis@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Thats not at all what I said though? I said that whoever is crossing that invisible line is risking their lives and they probably know it. And if that is the case and people have to cross that line to go fish and then that warship is just randomly picking off boats then yes it is absolutely terrorism.

[-] Machinist@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

I've been wondering the same thing and haven't seen reporting yet on who the victims are or their families. I figure there's a decent chance that they are running drugs. Or, at least some of them are.

That being said, I'd totally run drugs if it was the only way to feed my family or they were being threatened. Just like the labor that farms coca, low level workers are mostly ethically blameless in my view.

That shit has to be terrifying, going out in a little boat knowing a military ship may blow you up. Their poor families have to live with the fear as well. Even worse is if they're doing it under threat.

It's the whole Pablo Escobar thing, I could give a fuck less if he gets whacked. However, that doesn't mean some family trying to survive on subsistence farming and growing coca for extra cash deaerves a hellfire missle.

[-] gergolippai@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

That must be one sturdy boat.
