Wait, it hit the wharf after it left port? How do you even manage that?

Got an idea for next month's banner?
Wellington Harbourmaster Grant Nalder said the ferry departed about 8.15 on Wednesday and hit the southern end of Glasgow wharf.
The wharf extends some way away from land. They just messed up and clipped the end of the wharf that sticks out into the harbour as the were leaving.
It sounds like they clipped it with the tail of the boat on the way out. It's directly across from their berth.
Yikes
That reminds me of reading John McPhee’s interesting account of riding on barges along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. He told of the phenomenon where if your barge gets too close to the river bank, the hydrodynamics are such that you can get “sucked” right into the bank.
This may also have been a factor in the Ever Stuck blocking the Suez canal.
Why do I get the impression the harbour master and captain are during around smoking cigars and pissing themselves laughing about it?
Obviously this is more imagination than fact
I don't think anyone involved in this will be laughing right now, to be honest.
