State Rep. Michael Echols of Monroe, a hotelier and property developer in northeastern Louisiana, will lead the Louisiana House Republican Caucus after his colleagues elected him chairman.

Echols, who is serving his second term, also has an extensive background in the healthcare and insurance industries. He was chosen over Rep. John Illg of Metairie to replace former Chairman Mark Wright, who is running for a seat on Public Service Commission.

Republicans control a super majority with 73 seats in the 105-member House.

Echols will lead the delegation to remain unified in its priorities as well as those of Republican Gov. Jeff Landry, who favored Echols in the secret ballot race.

“I am honored by the confidence my colleagues have placed in me to serve as majority Leader,” Echols said. "Now more than ever, Louisiana needs principled, solutions-oriented leadership that reflects the values and priorities of hardworking families across our state.

"I look forward to collaborating with members of both chambers to deliver accountable, efficient government that fosters economic growth, strengthens public safety and champions local communities.”

Republican House Speaker Phillip DeVillier said Echols will drive the majority's agenda in the chamber.

"Rep. Michael Echols' leadership as majority leader will be instrumental in guiding the HouseRepublican agenda to achieve results for all Louisianans,” DeVillier said.
