I thought he explained it clearly before?

He basically makes shitty movies so Hollywood can fund vacations for his friends . The filming locations being the vacation spots.

[–] claymedia@lemmy.world 52 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It also keeps his friends working who aren’t in front of the camera. If he can take a vacation and get a solid payday for a bunch of people, why not?

Doesn't mean they're good movies. You could still out an honest effort into the movies even if they're a ploy to help your friends. At least lay off the racist humor. His entire Native American cast walked off set of his western over the jokes in it.

Are we not going to talk about Punch-Drunk love or nah?

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 34 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Also, for comedies, Big Daddy, The Wedding Singer, Happy Gilmore, and the Water Boy are classics.

Leaving out the original, Billy Madison, should be considered some kind of blaspheme.

Chris Farley and Steve Buscemi are so good in their small roles in the film.

[–] MementoMori@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Norm Mcdonald too!

[–] HurlingDurling@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

And while he wasn't in it directly, "Grammas Boy" is an absolute gem. Also, let's not forget Little Nicky, it's the Shiznu!

[–] ThreeLawsDebugger@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

Or Reign Over Me, he was great in that one.

Every single character in that movie made me physically angry. Which probably proves your point. It wasn't anger at Adam, it was anger at the character and his stupid shitty life choices

Uncut Gems is anxiety incarnate. Not everyone's cup of tea, but undeniably a masterpiece.

[–] bandario@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I really didn't enjoy the movie but it was solely for this reason. It made me feel physically sick the entire time. I guess it's powerful in that regard.

[–] kvn@midwest.social 3 points 1 year ago

I was just so irritated with the characters that it was difficult to enjoy.

Not a Sandler movie but I preferred Good Time which is the same directors as Uncut Gems. Very similar vibe but less irritating I guess.

I've never understood gambling addiction other than as a gambling-version of substance abuse. Uncut Gems brought it into sharp, uncomfortable, focus.

[–] daringdomino3s@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

Didn’t he say if he didn’t win an Oscar for uncut gems he’d just double down on his shitty fun movies?

[–] BeezKnuts@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Maybe I just have a bad opinion but I've thoroughly enjoyed almost all of his movies. Not every movie needs to be a masterpiece. Sometimes it's nice to just watch something that's relatable.

[–] weariedfae@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

I unironically love 50 First Dates. It's cute.

[–] MiddleWeigh@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (4 children)

The classic ones are still good, happy Gilmore, water boy, Billy madison, I mean come on. That's nostalgic stuff right there.

I'm probobly more of an art snob than your average person, but I can still consume those movies for sure.

I've never seen uncut gems though. Maybe I'll give it a shot.

[–] BeezKnuts@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm really nostalgic for Click. Really the only ones I didn't like were grownups and grownups 2. That's just because I'm a hipster and can't enjoy things everyone else likes.

[–] Louise@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I really enjoyed Click (as well as most of Sandler's films) but I'm honestly terrified of rewatching them because I feel like there's a 50% chance I'll hate them in the present for (insert really poor taste joke that is either homophobic, transphobic, or ableist). Click especially because I know there is supposedly something rough in it and I'm conflicted on if I want to find my old DVD of the film and possibly ruin the movie.

That said, I now want to watch Uncut Gems because of this post, so maybe I'm doomed to watch Sandler films.

[–] jimmyjoners@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I watched click recently and it definitely did NOT hold up for me. It's just so over the top dramatic that it waded into cringe for me. Sucks because when I was a teen I thought it was absolutely amazing.

[–] sauerkraus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Grownups and grownups 2. Definitely two of the movies of all time.

[–] gbuttersnaps@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Uncut Gems is a two hour and fifteen minute panic attack imo. Very well written/performed/directed though, it earned its 91 on metacritic

[–] bandario@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Happy Gilmore is high art.

[–] spauldo@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

There's no one my age or older that can help but laugh at seeing Bob Barker kick the crap out of someone.

[–] MiddleWeigh@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

It's all in the hips.

[–] thismessisaplace@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Uncut Gems - If anxiety is what you crave.

Good movie.

[–] slipperydippery@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

What about Reign over me?

[–] iamericandre@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Funny People is easily one of the best movies he has ever been in. I know reviews tend to be mixed but I think he does a really great job in that one.

[–] Fluba@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Is this a duplicate post from one you submitted 6 hours ago?

[–] Ciren@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I have honestly always really enjoyed Click and I kid you not, I've never been able to stop myself from crying while watching it. It's so stupid but so good

[–] Liv2themax@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

50 First Dates was quality. Ok, well, my future wife and I enjoyed it immensely. Besides, got laid after.

[–] Bael422@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Except it's the opposite. Uncut gems was a terrible movie. I loved almost all of his other movies.
