So I can blame it all on that one teacher who said I’d never amount to anything. Rad.

That teacher:

I had a teacher who liked my writing, always left an encouraging comment and said I made her laugh. Then I came to high school and my new teacher graded me lower because she thought my writing wasn't good. She made another classmate read his work that she liked. It wasn't good or anything special. It still made me lose all motivation for writing. Sucks when you're the type of person who relies heavily on external validation.

That sucks. Have you found ways to help override that need for external validation?

No. I'm very sensitive to criticism and I lose motivation easily (with a host of other things — suspected ADHD I'm postponing getting tested for). I require a lot of external validation and pressure to function beyond bare minimum.

That's tough!

Originally I meant it as more of an empowering question - in theory this isn't something that has to define you.

Granted, it's a huge challenge to change, but it doesn't have to define you if you choose to chip away at it. At least, thats what i tell myself, anyway - I'm wired similarly

Intonation makes a difference... First time round it read the quote in a condescending tone. As in, stop doing this now, you can do it when you grow up. I thought he became a writer to spite her. Reread, and oh... She thought he was great.

Edit: not sure why I assumed female teacher, but here we are.

I'm a bus driver and I try to encourage anything the kids show passion in. Dunno if it's the same level as teachers, but I sure am trying
