Native nvme driver was supposed to be one of the selling points of windows 11 over windows 10
And it will be a selling point of Windows 12 over Windows 11!
Or of Linux, presuming it has a decent driver...
Why disable it?
They're trying to get you to move to Linux, but you just won't take the hint, so now they have to try another thing...
The real answer is probably because Microsoft doesn't like giving away server features.
Per the article, it sounds like it could be flaky:
The registry trick came with caveats, though. Third-party SSD management tools like Samsung Magician and Western Digital Dashboard were not compatible with the new driver, and BitLocker could trigger recovery prompts after the driver swap.
I read the article. Are they afraid server customers are going to buy cheaper home editions of win11 instead?
Since all unactivated Windows dies is complain at you, it doesn't even need purchased, does it?
Server comes with way more tools than windows 11, anyone that could just use windows 11 as a server is probably already doing so. (Although probably still on win10 or 7 most of the time.)
AI code probably broke it.
Microslop at it again
Technology
News community around technology, social media platforms, information technology and governmental policy surrounding it.
What doesn't fit here?
The core of the story has to be technology focused.
- If article mentions "AI" in a sentence and then talks about business economics that doesn't make it tech news.
- Gaming is too many layers removed from technology. There are many dedicated communities that are a better fit for it.
- Transporation is too many layers removed from technology. EVs while use many cool technologies have many dedicated communities that are a better fit for it.
- Entertainment is too many layers removed from technology. While sometimes it can fit here, business or cultural aspects of it are a better fit for dedicated communities.
- Cybersecurity. While it heavily focuses on technology, most of the time it's too technical for most people who are not already invested in it. Should be posted in a dedicated communities unless it has broader connection to other tech areas.
