This is a bit embarrassing but I'd rather be honest and get some straightforward advice. I came across a guy on Instagram who lives in the same city as me. I don't know him at all and his account is private. He showed up in my suggestions | clicked out of curiosity and that was it at first. But over the past few days I've caught myself going back to his profile, checking it repeatedly, looking at suggested accounts from his page and overthinking things based on basically no real information. Part of me keeps thinking that if I just send a follow request, I'll either lose interest or finally "get over it," but another part of me thinks that might just make it worse. So I guess my question is: How do you actually stop this kind of fixation on someone you don't even know? Do I just ignore it and cut off access completely or is it better to face it and move on that way? Any blunt or honest advice is welcome.

Blunt version: this isn't really about him. You don't know him, and that's the whole appeal. He can't disappoint you, can't see you, and fits whatever you need on a given night. He's a blank you get to fill in.

So "cut off access or face it" is the wrong fork. Stop first and answer a different question: what is the checking doing for you? If it's company at 1am, then you need company, and he's just the screen it plays on. If it's avoiding a real person who could actually reject you, then he's the decoy keeping you from that.

Then pick one honestly. Either stop cold for two weeks (no profile, no suggested accounts, no peeking) and see who you actually miss, or send the request and let the real, boring, three-word reply replace the picture in your head. Both are honest moves. Refreshing the page forever is the one that keeps you exactly where you are.

My advice is very unromantic.

What you're seeing is their best face. They're not who you imagine they are. They could still be a good person and maybe a potential romantic interest, but it won't be the person you've created for them. If you don't just let them go, one day you might meet in person somehow and you'll have this one-sided parasocial relationship that will either freak them out or they'll never catch up with.

I suggest not pursuing the friend request. If it's a limerance scenario, you might be fine now. You might browse their profile occasionally. But what about when you're feeling exceptionally low? What will you do? Add a couple of their friends and try to slowly ingratiate your way into their life? Message them with an admission of infatuation?

Some of my fondest memories are of people I never pursued. And they'll always stay that way.

Send the request. See what happens. And read about limerance to demystify what might be happening in your brain.

Why not just shoot your shot? Either he's interested, which could develop into something interesting, or he will turn you down and that certainty will then hopefully make it easier to stop focusing on him.

Welcome to the Relationship Advice community on Lemmy and Kbin!

The ideal place to ask for help with your relationships: romantic, friendships, we don't know what we are yet, co-workers or just human interactions in general.

Please make sure you read our rules before posting.

Rules:

1: Treat all users with respect. [!]

The goal of this community is helping OP and readers, not making fun of them. We are an inclusive community, any sort of disrespect towards ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, etc, will not be tolerated.

2: Mark sexual content as NSFW. [!]

Posts containing mentions or descriptions of sexual topics must be tagged as NSFW. This includes descriptions of sexual acts, requests for advice in the bedroom, explicit descriptions of your body and similar content.

3: All posts must be a request for advice.

All posts must be phrased as a request for advice or as a question. Sharing of stories, personal anecdotes, or past mistakes are only allowed if they're followed by a clear and relevant request for advice with the situation.

4: Provide sufficient and relevant information.

Your title and body need to contain enough information relevant to your situation, such as ages, genders, and the relationship between people mentioned. For privacy-related concerns, we recommend using fake names and broad general locations.

5: Comments must be on topic and relevant to OP.

How are rules enforced and bans applied?

For the most part, this community operates under the assumption that users are acting in good faith and should be given second-chances for their mistakes. Posts and comments with very light rule violations, or otherwise undesired but mostly harmless content, can be removed by a moderator on a case by case basis without any further punitive actions.

For violations of our rules, we follow a “3 strike” system as follows:

  • 1st violation: 72 hours ban + moderator warning via PMs.

  • 2nd violation: 1 week ~ 1 month ban + final warning via PMs.

  • 3rd violation: 1 month ~ permanent ban.

The goal of this system is making sure users are made aware of their behavior before being permanently banned, but also protecting the community from any rule violations.

Exceptions:

While the “3 strike” system will be applied to the majority of situations, rules marked with a [!] in the sidebar signifies a rule that, if violated in an intentional, malicious or significant way, can warrant an immediate permanent ban regardless of the number of previous violations. This includes severe disrespect to users or groups, dangerous content, and similar.
