Turns out that hydrogen gradually (or not so gradually) damages whatever vessels you try to contain it in, especially under pressure. Yikes - a leaky bomb! Just what you want on board your hydrogen-powered car, boat, or plane, eh.

People keep on talking about hydrogen instead of batteries as the future of energy. Car companies like Toyota, BMW, and others have spent billions on it. Toyota is now the subject of a class action lawsuit in California for having failed to deliver on the hype... https://finance.yahoo.com/news/toyota-faces-5-7-billion-220000468.html But there are so many reasons why hydrogen is a bad choice, most of which are basic physics (low energy density, difficulty/danger storing/transporting, high inefficiency, etc.)... one has to wonder why it keeps popping up again like a stubborn zombie. https://unearthed.greenpeace.org/2020/12/08/unearthed-today-why-oil-companies-want-you-to-love-hydrogen/ Turns out that massive adoption of hydrogen would breath new life into the flagging future of the fossil fuel industry as they 'engineer the green transition' in a way that maximises their shareholder value.

There are so many great reasons to dismiss the exploration of hydrogen as an energy storage medium that I'm struggling to decide where to start.

Yes, I've noticed dunking on this particular tech is one of your special interests ; ) I notice that all of the discourse reproduced in this thread assumes that using hydrogen to power heavy vehicles is a proposed technology. It's not. It's been tested, and proven, right here in Aotearoa;

Which suggests there are workable solutions to problems like metal embrittlement. Just like there are workable solutions to the resource costs, safety risks, storage limits, and various other issues in battery tech. We certainly can't ignore the costs, risks and limits of any given application. But keep in mind, opponents of renewable tech will talk these up at every opportunity, and we need to carefully avoid repeating their talking points uncritically.

Along similar lines, is spruiking hydrogen a useful way for reputation launderers for the fossil fool industry to dunk on battery-electric vehicles? Sure. But there are just as many reasons for industrial players locked into a battery-based path, to dunk on hydrogen. Is promoting the future possibility of green hydrogen a way to sell brown hydrogen as a "transitional" fuel? Again, sure. But that doesn't prove green hydrogen isn't a viable energy use path. All any of this tells us is that we need to put aside any and all claims about whose interests a discourse might serve, and carefully evaluate all renewable tech - both existing and proposed - on its testable, technical merits.

There may be some special situations where, as an interim technology (like the monstrosity of 'hybrid' motor vehicles) is a temporarily justifiable development... but it's only a fairly weak stopgap until batteries inevitably replace them.

The real issue I have is splitting the focus and being paralysed by indecision on which way to invest. Batteries are the better option, no question. There may be a role for hydrogen that we inadvertently produce by some other process, but it should be a distant second to battery technologies from a safety, reliability, portability, and energy density perspective. The pervasive and prolonged 'greenwashing' of hydrogen by the fossil fuel industry is the downfall of hydrogen, in my opinion.

I don't quite 'get' your persistent push for hydrogen to be considered. It's been considered. Every large scale attempt to roll it out, in spite of its fundamental limiting factors (low energy density, storage, safety, infrastructure cost, etc.), has failed, despite some of the biggest players in the industry throwing huge amounts of $$ into it, e.g. Toyota, BMW, etc.... and they've all taken a major bath, and are dealing with class-action lawsuits with corporation-ruining penalties to boot.
