I think putting (edit: some of) the heat on Valve here is reasonable. If they had a principled stance on being pro-LGBTQ+, they might refuse to sell any games in those regions. But they are choosing instead to let the lgbtq+ folks take the hit so that they can continue to rake in the big bucks from those regions.
Obviously I wouldn't actually expect an enormous capital driven machine like Valve to do something like that, but its just an extra nudge on the gauge of my opinion of them as a company

I'd cheer valve on for taking a principled stance against bigotry in my country while personally grieving the loss of my steam library.
I doubt it'll make a difference. Also almost all my LGBTQ friends are huge gamers. It's an escape, and often provides online community. And I'm in a very liberal country and they still need it here. Can't imagine the need for it in China or Russia. Whether that's healthy is a big question, but the rug pull definitely won't be.

Steam is making a decision by continuing to do business in regions that made those decisions
In the case of China, Steam very much made this decision on their own, or received bad advice and did so.
But they happily obeyed the orders of Russia and China.

They're not even blocked. Valve did the absolute bare minimum to skirt past China's restrictions. The only thing they did was make it so you can't search or filter by that tag. The tagged games themselves remain accessible.

I mean, I guess it's better than all of Steam being blocked like it has been in the past. Not really their fault. Gaming is really frowned on my the Chinese government in general since it's harder to control the subject matter than with videos that can just be scanned for key words and blocked or edited. But sucks that they even have an LGBTQ+ classification at all. Even if it may have originally been to help LGBTQ+ people find inclusive media, it's obvious that those kinds of things are always used for censorship more than inclusivity. The flags should instead be on the anti-LGBTQ+ content, not regular, inclusive of real society content.

Different countries have different laws, should not be a surprise. If you want to make business there you follow the laws. Same as the reason why mobiles now all have USB-C, laws in the EU. Or why you can decline to have your data collected (if any website doesn't just ignore your choice) because of Laws in some country.

I've got no problem here. It might've only been temporarily blocked. LGBTQ+ stuff isn't illegal in China, just porn. Unfortunately for steam most games with the LGBTQ+ tag also have the NSFW or Hentai tags, which are blocked.
But searching with the LGBTQ+ tag seems to work at this point.
Yet the LGBTQ+ content in Guild Wars 2 was still stripped out in China :/

Weird that thread's no longer there on Tieba, but since I don't play the game and can't find any other reference I'll assume it's real. Foreign companies do tend to get the weirdest advice to pass NPPA and they were a lot more strict in order to encourage domestic competition even just a few years ago, like the 'skulls' censorship in blizzard games.
I can say safely though there are plenty of Chinese made NPPA approved games with LGBT representation, just like there are plenty of skulls.

It's more so that they are blown up into much bigger issues than they actually are by those seeking power whether that be to attack a group or to galvanize their base.
