I keep seeing photos of these two. What’s the context? What’s the original?

A couple has been taken into custody after climbing the very top of New York City's Empire State Building, before getting engaged.

Russian nationals Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Beerkus, 32, unfurled a large banner at the tip of the skyscraper's needle that read: "When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace."

They face charges including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, trespass and disorderly conduct, according to the BBC's US partner CBS.

What exactly did they burgal?

[–] ViaGetty@lemmy.dbzer0.com 51 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

And what is the charge? Burgling a skyscraper? A succulent american skyscraper??

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 3 weeks ago

This is architecture manifest!

[–] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago

He burgled that woman's singleness

Breaking and entering is burglary.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I guess the difference between B&E and burgalry is the intent to commit a secondary crime inside, which is typically theft, thus the common confusion.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah the DA is just throwing the book at them and see what sticks.

[–] MrRandom@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

I think that's illegal entry

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 29 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This couple climbed the Empire State Building yesterday and put up a flag that said something about love and peace, then the guy proposed.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

And werr arrested for promoting a positive message I assume.

They climbed the empire State building other day and he proposed to her. Before that they flew a flag that said something on it.

Influencers being vain, more or less

when I learned to finally piss in my dreams without wetting the bed, that's when I knew I had truly ascended as a lucid dreamer

[–] toynbee@piefed.social 19 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

I once had a pee dream set in the undefined future. In it, there were plenty of toilets but they were all protected by forcefields. The forcefields were intermittent, but with only moments when they were off, so you could get through only with very precise timing.

I spent the entire dream trying to either match that timing or find a restroom without a forcefield. I didn't succeed at either, but fortunately that meant I didn't try to pee, either.

That said, the moment I woke up I immediately ran to the real life ... I hope ... Bathroom.

[–] KernelTale@programming.dev 5 points 3 weeks ago

Since we are sharing peeing dreams mine was that I had to pee while being watched by Nazi officers in auswitz. I did unfortunately manage...

[–] four@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I often have dreams where I have to pee, but can't for some reason (can't find the toilet, etc., haven't had forcefields yet though)

I wonder if it's our brains recognizing the need for pee but still protecting us from pissing ourselves.

Though I did have dreams where I did pee a lot and still woke up to dry sheets and full bladder.

Brains are weird.

[–] toynbee@piefed.social 3 points 3 weeks ago

I used to have them semi frequently, but haven't for many years, even if I fell asleep having to pee.

My least favorite pee dream that I can remember was from when I was a child. I don't really remember many of the details, but I know that I was in a submarine and I think there were mercenaries trying to take it over. Also, it was slowly flooding.

I was young and it scared the hell out of me. The moment I woke up I went to an appropriate receptacle and peed. For a long, long time I made sure to void everything before I fell asleep.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Are you not sure if it was a real bathroom because you might still be stuck in a dream?

[–] toynbee@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago

That's what I was hoping to imply!

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 weeks ago

Just the night before last I had a dream where I had to pee really bad, but no matter how many times I peed it never felt better. When it finally woke me up I was very grateful that my body refused to actually pee. One of these days my luck's gonna run out...

[–] Fluffy_Ruffs@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Reminds me of the time I went to spit off of the roof of a building while in a dream.

I ended up hocking a big loogie right in my bed 2 inches from my face. That was fun to wake up to.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

I used to have less deep sleep and more than once, woke up, walked to the bathroom, sat on the toilet but was not completely convinced I was awake and not dreaming so could not pee. I was just so exhausted I didn't know if I was asleep or awake!

[–] socsa@piefed.social 6 points 3 weeks ago

What if she asks nicely?

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 weeks ago

Curiously I have pee dreams where I pee, but it doesn't take and I soon need to pee again.

So my brain seems to know how to pretend pee.

[–] MrRandom@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

see,
the trick is to know you're in a dream first

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

Now you know when to check

[–] Una@europe.pub 4 points 3 weeks ago
[–] HairyTeeth@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

All the toilets in my dreams are broken or otherwise unusable. It's deeply frustrating at the time, but I guess I should be thankful.

[–] virku@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Loving this spin on the good ol image macro!

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

The problem isn't when there's a toilet, the problem is when there is no toilet and my brain suddenly thinks it's okay that there's no toilet. 🫩

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago

You're not my Dad.

[–] regdog@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

This advice has saved me on many a restless nights.

In my dream I keep wandering in search of a restroom that I can use, but every toilet I come across has some kind of problem (too big, too small, too exposed), and I have to keep wandering until I eventually wake up and make my way to the bathroom.
