Specifically the subgenre of "humans discover and have to protect adorable widdle alien sophonts". The question of whether the titular fuzzies are in fact sophonts is what drives the plot.

Edit Further, for a book written in 1962, it's surprisingly prescient:

Human caused climate change and the evidence for which being suppressed by a large corporation.

Said climate change causing an immigration crisis of people from one part of the world to another.

The inherent power structure attempting to debate the nature of the immigrants and if they have any kind of rights at all.
