What is global news?

Something that happened or was uncovered recently anywhere in the world. It doesn't have to have global implications. Just has to be informative in some way.

Post guidelines

Title formatPost title should mirror the news source title. If you don't like the title of article, look for an alternative source instead of editorializing it.
URL formatPost URL should be the original link to the article (even if paywalled) and archived copies left in the body. It allows avoiding duplicate posts when cross-posting.
[Opinion] prefixOpinion (op-ed) articles must use [Opinion] prefix before the title. Opinion articles refer to articles that their publisher doesn't explictly endorse.
Country prefixCountry prefix can be added to the title with a separator (|, :, etc.) if the news is from a local publisher who doesn't clearly mention the country.

I was talking to a friend just the other day and said something to the effect of Spain seems to be one of the only countries out there with a head on their shoulders in regard to their actions with Israel and the use of their airspace.

So naturally fascist fuck Donnie dipshit does this.

It's a bit pointless though, isn't it? Seeing as Spain is part of the EU.

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world -1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

If the rest of the EU backs Spain then probably, yes. Will they? They don't have a great track record of standing up to Trump either collectively or individually.

[–] Pofski@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Honestly, I do not know what you are basing that on.

I think you are mixing up two things: EU members trying to avoid immediate escalation with the US, and Europe preparing to reduce its dependence on the US over time.

Also, because Spain is in the EU, formal trade retaliation against Spain is not just a Spain-only issue. External trade policy is handled at EU level.

[–] naeap@sopuli.xyz 58 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, because the EU doesn't exist as THE trading partner

That's why we have it in the first place, to not be able to be blackmailed by such idiots

However, it's unclear how Trump's idea would work as Spain is a member of the EU, which is in charge of trade policy for all of its member countries.

He truly doesn't know, does he?

He only knows what short summary his cabinet members give him

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

And they only know what a bunch of their half-wit interns managed to get out of grok.

Will this last till TACO Tuesday?

[–] john_t@piefed.ee 44 points 3 weeks ago

It won't even start because the US doesn't have a trade agreement with Spain, just with the EU. He can't do squat about it.

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 11 points 3 weeks ago

No. With this loser, every day is TACO day.

[–] Sunshine@piefed.ca 3 points 3 weeks ago

Good! Stop trading with Canada too!

[–] calcopiritus@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Good. I do the best I can, but it's pretty hard to track the ownership of every brand to make sure I'm not giving money to an US company.

Them voluntarily not sending their products over here will make my boycott much easier.
