According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, the IRGC said in a statement that the region’s energy exports would be “either for everyone or for no one”.

Analysts told Reuters that Iran was signalling it could rely on its Houthi allies in Yemen to close the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the strategic waterway leading to the Red Sea. Such a move could open a new front against Washington and threaten two of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.

The Bab al-Mandab Strait links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is a key route for Saudi oil exports and a significant share of global maritime trade.

Bab-al-Mandab handles way more than oil, a huge amount of sea cargo heading to Europe uses it to access the Mediterranean via Suez.

Oh yeah it's big for lots of other stuff. But since UAE is transporting oil to the other side of their land by pipeline, Bab el Mandeb would also block the backup oil transport route to Europe.

Iran has massive strategical cards to play to the point you really start wondering who thought attacking them without a backup energy plan would be a good idea.

The same people who thought it was a good idea to stop funding and demonize any forms of renewable

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Its just sooo stupid. Solar is cheap enough for some homeowners to install it themselves, and the sun doesn't get more expensive every time a world leader needs a distraction.

Renewables aren't just cleaner, they are independence.

Today, I've learned of the second Strait I can name.

Though this name is a bit harder to remember the exact spelling.

Straits have never come up so much in conversation

The Strait of Malacca is regularly in the news as it's another significant maritime choke point.

Now that I'm calling attention to it, you will probably start to notice it a lot more.

I believe you!

Strait of Gibraltar is an easy one.

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

That's the first I've heard of that

I agree, this is the year I learned about more than just the Bering Strait and Strait of Hormuz.

Thanks Don & Ben. Great job fellas. We had two open straits and now we’re about to have two closed ones.

Guess all the shit they pulled wasn’t enough. They really wanted to screw over the entire planet this time.

What about the Strait of "Release the Epstein Files"?

[–] Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think that's too far from their homeland. For now I have to assume they can't cost effectively blockade that one.

Even if they get manpower from the Houthis, how are all the rockets, mines, ships, radars, in short the materiel for a blockade supposed to get there?

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Did you forget about the previous time the Houthi's blockaded the Red Sea in support of Palestine?

[–] Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The way I remember they got bombed by the US and UK and their blockade was defeated. Well it officially ended in a ceasefire, but despite continuous new Israeli transgressions the Houthis seem to not have resumed attacking Israeli ships, so I assume they are substantially weakened.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

They kept up the blockade until Hamas agreed to a ceasefire in Gaza. Houthi's bravery and solidarity is unmatched.
