Seriously, I keep waiting for that 'Triumph the Comic Insult Dog' moment to kick in, where he explains that the whole thing was a joke in bad taste, you know..?

"For me to poop on!"
But no, that context is seemingly lacking, wtf?

I'm honestly baffled, here. Jim Jefferies is normally GOLD in everything he touches, but... *&$@# is this anti-woman shizzle?

I MUST be missing the joke, right? Right..?

I saw him when he was on tour with Jimmy Carr and got a bit of a ick vibe from a lot of his material. It felt like he was taking the edgier, sexist angle of his schtick and instead of using it as a platform to make deeper jabs at our society, he was leveraging it for manosphere talking points.

Very disappointing. More like a Bill Maher show than a clever comic.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Damn, that's disappointing.

Jim is so good when he's taking on guns, idiot politics, crazy stories, and all that... I'm seriously baffled why he'd shift to women as a punching bag.

You mentioned Maher, another comic I used to love, and I can't help feel you're right on the button with that analogy. It's like he came out hitting home runs, and then fell in love with the idea that he automatically had prescient things to say about society.

Something like that, anyway.

Maybe you are just really learning what these people are like... I don't know much about this guy, but Bill Maher was always a piece of shit.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't know remotely enough about what Maher is like behind closed doors to say for sure, but there was a time when he was essentially the most progressive mainstream comic in the States. By a wide margin.

Not unlike Joe Rogan to an extent. Once a solid standup comic and interesting interviewer who seemed to get wrecked by fame and money, or something like that.

You know there is more to someone being a good or bad person than their political leanings, right? That seems to be the only thing you are considering, but some liberals are pieces of shit. It isn't mutually exclusive, and a big fat paycheck (or threat of lack thereof) tends to push people in directions...

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

That seems to be the only thing you are considering

No, I am merely constraining myself to known information. I don't make assumptions about a person's 'goodness' based on merely political leanings, public statements and that sort of thing.

If I don't know for sure then I'm not going to call someone a "piece of shit" over something that might have triggered me.

Sorry, I skipped around, but the set was pretty eh for me, what's the timestamp for the joke you're interested in specifically?

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Right at the :16 mark, the idea that tickets for women are 'easy'

...and then it gets worse and worse from there, like he has to double-down-dunk in order to keep propping up his point.

Fucking embarrassing, mate.

of yea, he's lost the plot. seems reeeal piece-of-shitty

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

Idk I can't get a straight read out of him. Sometimes he is funny and poignant, sometimes he seems like he is secretly maga. I get the same mixed feelings about bill burr.

He was brilliant at his best.

One of the world's top comics, with plenty of specials and his own shows. If there was some kind of critics' roundtable on comedians, I'm pretty sure he'd be rated at or near the top for years, now.

Hence my disappointment.

You can hang on to your opinion all you want, but what I said isn't wrong, and I'm pretty sure the known metrics support all that.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think the poop is implied. He's clearly a shock comic, his gimmick is saying things that make people uncomfortable. He's playing a character and how much of himself is part of that character, we can only guess , but when he's on stage he's "the guy who says humorous offensive things."

I'm sure many wouldn't find it funny, but I know that many do. As is their right.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

He's absolutely not a shock comic. What a ridiculous take.

His comments on gun control, politics, and whatever else have been leading edge for quite a while, hence my bafflement, here.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I watched the whole video, it's nothing but shock.

Is this maybe an old clip? It's possible he matured beyond shock since then.

EDIT: I just saw below that this is a new clip. Maybe he immatured instead.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I just saw below that this is a new clip. Maybe he immatured instead.

Exactly.

He was a smart, funny, excellent comedian for like 10yrs, and then seemingly he devolved to this bullshit shock material. Wtf...?

[–] kindnesskills@literature.cafe 1 points 1 week ago

My guess is he got lazy or uninspired and let an LLM do the writing?

Seems like the material gen-AI would put out, based on the sheer volume - decades! - of unfunny jokes it would have been trained on.

[–] Bane_Killgrind@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Idk there's probably some funny way to make an indictment of dating culture, without punching down on anyone, but is he a good enough comedian to get there?

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

Abs - a - fooking - lutely, if you know his earlier material.

Dude had been arguably the funniest comic on earth for ~10yrs, and then this bullshit against women.

[–] TheDoozer@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

What year is this? That type of humor was overdone in the 90's, and irrelevant now. Even in the early 2000s it was normal to split bills or trade off paying. Same with the "wish I were gay" nonsense. I'll be honest, I didn't get past that.

May as well be joking about Y2K. Totally anachronistic.
